Introduction:

Good Morning everyone. these pass couple of weeks we have been studying the Being known as Our God. we have kind of gone over the basic characteristic of who our God is, this week will be the last of this series on who our God is. today we are going to be looking at our God is wrathful, our God is gracious, and our God is merciful. as Christian we tend to over look some of these qualities of our God.

Our God is wrathful:

when it comes to God we tend to not think about the wrathful side of God, because many of us who believe know that if we are facing God’s wrath then we are on the wrong side of spiritual battle. for a Christian God’s wrath is consider to be protect against his God’s enemies. Our God has enemies, and they are still waging war against our God even still today. so the first example we are going to be looking comes from the Old Testament Nahum 1:2-3, from this passage is that a Prophet name Nahum is sent to the City of Nineveh, which is the same Nineveh from Jonah.
Nahum 1:2–3 NKJV
God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies; The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord has His way In the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust of His feet.
From these two verses here in Nahum we see that the Prophet is speaking toward the city of Nineveh about going against God. explaining how those who are against God will face a Jealous, a vengeful, a furious God. we should also take notice here to about how God will take vengeance on his adversaries, and that his wrath for his enemies. Nahum point out that God is slow to anger, and that God is great in Power. meaning that Lord is patient for with his people, and that his enemies should fear his power. when comes to the Lord is patient with his people think back with Abraham asking to spare the two cities of the plains Sodom, and Gomorrah, as for his power, think about Egypt, they were abusing his people and we see that God hardens the heart of the Pharaoh in order to demonstrate his power. time and time again we see that God is always patient with his children, yet there are consequences that will happen because people have been stubborn on returning towards God. turn in your Bibles to Rom 1:18
Romans 1:18 NKJV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
from this verse here in Roman’s we see that Paul explains that the wrath of God is against the ungodly, and unrighteous men, those who will not turn from their own desires, the love of money, and the love for the world. these type of men would put ungodliness in their lives, they would not acknowledge God being the supreme being that he is, and put false gods in his place because these type of men who would chase after their own hearts, and the world they invoke the wrath of God. in a simpler context these type of men who are willing to deny Christ and God. with this in mind we come to understand that God’s wrath is Just. we can also see that God’s wrath is a consuming fire here in Heb 12:29
Hebrews 12:29 NKJV
For our God is a consuming fire.
Here in Hebrews we see that the author explains that Gods wrath is a consuming fire, and we have to realize that there are couple of decisions to make in this life that very important to us as being with free will and with those decisions we come to understand that there are pro’s and cons that come with them. there are couple important questions we have to ask ourselves. the first is there a God? the second do i believe in him? the third follow with the first two, will I follow God, and obey his will? lets go back to the fact that there is a spiritual battle for our souls we have to realize there only two side to this war, and how we live our life will reflect on ourselves when we come to face God are we going to chose the love of the world, and our very own selfish desires by becoming enemies with God who is the creator of life or are we going to live a life that is filling, learning by studying God’s word, living a life according to his will? because at the end of the day we can chose are we going to chose God or the world become enemies of God? turn in your Bibles to John 3:36
John 3:36 NKJV
He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
From this verse here in the Gospel of John we see that John is explain that whoever believes in Jesus Christ will have everlasting life, and there is also more to just believing on the name only. we have to being willing to learn and to walk in the steps of Christ who was the perfect examples for us, because if we deny Christ we are choosing the world and we are choosing to become enemies of God. we can also look at 2nd Thess 1:7-9
2 Thessalonians 1:7–9 NKJV
and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
From this passage here in 2nd Thess 1:7-9 we see that Paul is explain to the early church of Thessaloniki, that if early Christians claim to know God, but really do not know God, and to those who know the know the Gospels and do not obey are going to face God’s wrath. with this all in mind we come to understand that Our God is a Jealous God, A God who wants our undying love, a God who does not want to compete for our love, we have a God who wants our loyalty. Our God wrath is just, it not men’s anger uncontrollable. Our God’s wrath is fair because it comes down to our decision in life, and how we chose to live. if we chose to life a life for God, its not going to be easy, there are going to hardship a time for joy, and times of sadness, but we are putting God first instead of ourselves we are doing everything he wants us to do, we are living a life for him. On the other hand, if we chose the world we don’t have God on our side, we separated from God. today many people don’t like talk about this side of God because fear they that they are on the wrong side. for us as Christians we need not to be afraid of this side of God because we realize what sin does to us, and we understand that we all have fallen short. this side of God also protects us from the enemies of God. throughout the Bible we see that God’s wrath was direct towards those who did right in his sight. as long as we are living according to God’s word and doing his will should not be afraid, because God is also gracious to those who living according to his will.

Our God is Gracious:

Our second point for today is that our God is gracious towards his people, throughout the Bible we see that God has always been gracious towards the people of Isreal, and even today he has been gracious towards us Christians. lets turn in our Bibles to Psalm 145:8
Psalm 145:8 NKJV
The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy.
Here in Psalm we come to see that the author had an great understanding of God, because it is God’s grace that keeps him patient, and full of compassion on us, today many people take God’s grace for granted there have been many times when we deserved the consequences of this life. lets turn to Titus 2:11-15
Titus 2:11–15 NKJV
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.
Here in this letter to Titus we see that Paul explaining that because it was God’s grace that through the death of his son that we will inherit Salvation, but in order to inherit that salvation we have to live to God’s standards, separate ourselves from the world. another point we can make on how our God is gracious turn in your Bible to 2nd Peter 3:9
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
from this verse here in 2nd Peter, we see that Peter explains that God is not slacking when it comes to his promise, but is very patient towards us Christians because God does not want anyone to perish. we can see that God is given grace to us because he is being very patient with mankind hoping that they would chose him over the world. God wants us to come to him in our time of need. we can also see that out of God’s grace he forgives us, turn in your Bible to Nehemiah 9:17
Nehemiah 9:17 NKJV
They refused to obey, And they were not mindful of Your wonders That You did among them. But they hardened their necks, And in their rebellion They appointed a leader To return to their bondage. But You are God, Ready to pardon, Gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, Abundant in kindness, And did not forsake them.
Here in this verse here we see that Nehemiah explains that even when the people of Israel God was gracious towards by forgiving them from walking away from him, We see that God was ready to Pardon those who were not obey his commandments, and who were chasing the foreign gods of the land. God’s grace is something that we tend to take for granted, we have some many opportunity's, and we don’t use them. turning your Bibles to Eph 2:4-5
Ephesians 2:4–5 NKJV
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
we see that Paul here explains that its because of God’s grace that we are saved. at the end of the day it is in God’s Grace that we are saved, it’s not our own grace but God’s. when there is Grace there is also mercy.

Our God is Merciful:

As we study the Bible in our daily lives we come to get know the being known as God. throughout the Bible we get see the characteristic that make the being known as God. another Characteristic of God’s is that our God is Merciful. today we as people in generally we hardly show mercy towards other people, yet we have God who gives mercy time and time again. we see that Our God is merciful. lets turn in our Bible to Jeremiah 3:12
Jeremiah 3:12 NKJV
Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say: ‘Return, backsliding Israel,’ says the Lord; ‘I will not cause My anger to fall on you. For I am merciful,’ says the Lord; ‘I will not remain angry forever.
We can see that God is speaking to Jeremiah the Prophet, telling to tell the people in the northern part of Israel, that God want you to return to ways of God, and we see that God even tells Jeremiah that he would not let his anger be against those who return, and we also see that the anger of the lord does not remain forever, but we also see that God tells Jeremiah that I am merciful.
