Looking Back, Looking Up, Looking Forward

Today as we celebrate Easter weekend I want to share some thoughts with you that I have from meditating on Hebrews 10 related to the Easter and the situation we find ourselves in today. I need not remind us what crazy things are taking place before our eyes. Indeed the crazy has been in the world since the time the fall of Adam and Eve, but it seems now to be gaining ascendency in so many realms. Our need to stand firm only grows as the pressure against the Kingship of our Lord Jesus grows. Remember what the Psalmist said in Psalm 2 , “why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing, the kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the LORD and against his anointed.” We are watching this happening today - think of what is happening in Israel right before our eyes.
Today we remember the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. The author of Hebrews speaks of this. Jesus came to enact a new covenant by the shedding of His own blood on the cross, to replace the old by which no one could be made right with God. It is the blood of Jesus Christ by and through which we can be reconciled onto the Father. Each of us is in a terrible wretched state of judgment and condemnation before God. We turned our backs on Him and brought about immeasurable guilt before God because of which the only just punishment is an eternity in Hell.
The author of Hebrews says that this sacrifice is what sanctifies us before God, and through which he writes His laws upon our hearts. Because of the blood of Jesus He will not remember our sins. They are paid for in full. This is the gospel message and is what we stand upon. We enter into this by responding in repentance and faith. If any here haven’t done that I plead with you to turn away from your sins and receive forgiveness through Jesus.
The author of Hebrews then speaks of the situation they were in, and what we are in now. We look back to the cross, but Jesus didn’t stay there. We now look to a Savior who is seated at the right hand of God until His enemies are placed beneath His feet. We have a Savior who is now interceding for us before the throne of grace. We have a Savior who is ALIVE, active and working in the hearts of men today. This is our confidence.
And the author of Hebrews also reminds of the day to come. We must be people who are preparing for THAT day. He says, “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, for he is faithful who promised.” He wants us therefore to provoke one another unto love and good works. He wants us to exhort one another to stand strong, ESPECIALLY as we see the day approaching. What day is that? The day of the return of Jesus. The day when we will all stand before Him and give an account. The day that the New Testament speaks of in so many places. The day when He appears and when we stand before Him.
So my encouragement to all of us today is to be ready for that day. If anyone hasn’t really repented and turned to the Lord, that is the place to start. Some of you know my testimony in that regard, how I thought I was born again, but really was not. So please don’t just assume that you have. You must KNOW that you have met with Him and Jesus has spoken peace to your heart. Don’t listen to anyone else on that matter. Jesus, through the Holy Spirit will speak to your heart, and you will KNOW it.
And if you have been born again - continue steadfast in the faith, especially as you see the day drawing near. We all can see that day is drawing near. We are seeing things that we never saw before happening right before our eyes. But He who promised is FAITHFUL! Amen
