Luke 23:44–46 “It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”

Let’s look at the setting:
Time of Day
Time of Day
6th hour = 12noon
9th hour = 3pm
It was 3pm and, according to Luke, the sun’s light was failing. Some believe this to be an eclipse that was taking place.
Judgement of God
Judgement of God
Though this darkness was very real, it is also an allegory of the judgement of God; indicating God’s wrath being poured out on the sin of humanity and His very Son bearing the full weight of the wrath of God
Death of Christ
Death of Christ
Luke says that Jesus “called out with a loud voice;” meaning he cried out, raising His voice to a significant level.
In the middle of His pain, in the middle of His suffering, He didn’t curse, He didn’t criticize, He didn’t condemn.
On the contrary, He said “Father, I’m Yours!!
Take My life, take My soul, All is well!”
Even in His death, He showed to us how to live.
In the literal darkest hour of His life, with the whole known world watching, He professed a deep trust in His Heavenly Father stating “I commit Myself to you, even in My death!”
And, with the whole world watching, there was a man who Luke said “he praised God” and said “Certainly this man was innocent!”
In Jesus’ death, this man was able to praise God.
This speaks to us today; in our most darkest times of night, as we learn to lean on our Heavenly Father; even in the midst of a situation in which we think we are going to die (we may even die), when we fully commit our ways to the Lord, it becomes a testimony to the goodness of God.
To His kindness, to His tender mercy,
