The Death of Jesus Good Friday

Good Friday message.

The gospels all record what happened to Jesus both before and after he was nailed to the cross. We have heard the pastor insights about how horrible it must have been. There are several things that I want to call attention to in the description of Jesus’ death. I was always impressed with the account of how darkness came over the whole land. The whole of creation was mourning for Jesus. I have noticed that many times There have been dark skies on Good Friday.

Luke 23:46 NIV

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. All my bones are on display;

people stare and gloat over me.

They divide my clothes among them

and cast lots for my garment.

But you, Lord, do not be far from me.

You are my strength; come quickly to help me.

Deliver me from the sword,

my precious life from the power of the dogs.

Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;

save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

I will declare your name to my people;

in the assembly I will praise you.

You who fear the Lord, praise him!

All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!

Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!

For he has not despised or scorned

the suffering of the afflicted one;

he has not hidden his face from him

All the ends of the earth

will remember and turn to the Lord,

and all the families of the nations

for dominion belongs to the Lord

and he rules over the nations.

All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;

all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—

those who cannot keep themselves alive.

Posterity will serve him;

future generations will be told about the Lord.

They will proclaim his righteousness,

declaring to a people yet unborn:

He has done it!

John 19:30 NIV

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Matthew 27:50–54 NIV

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

Many people question Jesus’ death. Skeptics say that he was in a coma and was revived. Jerry Sittser a professor at Witworth University emphasizes that Jesus was resurrected not resuscitated.

I also like the book The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel. He was an investigative reporter for the Chicago Times and an avowed atheist. He set out to prove that The account of Jesus was a myth. However the more he learned the more he found the account of Jesus death and resurrection to be true. In his book he quotes 5 different writers who were not believers who documented the story. Josephus Jewish historian even the Jewish Talmud.
