Mark 15:21–35 (CSB)
21 They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’s cross. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull). 23 They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
24 Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get. 25 Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The inscription of the charge written against him was: The King of the Jews. 27 They crucified two criminals with him, one on his right and one on his left.
29 Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! 32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.
33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “See, he’s calling for Elijah.”
As we gather here this evening in remembrance of this awesome gift that our Lord Jesus did for us, by allowing Himself to take our place in death.
We honor the intention of this gift and show that we are grateful.
The only reason we gather and commemorate this day, is because of sin.
Not only the past sins of the world, but you sin, your sin, and yours.
and Mine.
Jesus knew we were destined to a fiery hell in eternity.
And He loved you and I so much and the world, He stepped into our demension and stepped between consequence and our sinful nature.
He took it for the team so-to-speak.
But unfortunately not all see it that way.
It is becoming more common place to treat this issue as something of a right.
Something we had coming.
If you hold this view, you couldn’t be more wrong.
Jesus, did not have to do this.
If he decided not to do it, according to scripture, we would still be in debt of sin,
With no hope of repaying that debt.
This is the day our debt was paid, in full!
Understanding this gift requires us to obedience to Christ, as He alone has paid for the authority in our lives to do so.
Lets take a moment to reflect on this gift, and have a conversation with Him thanking Him for this gift of eternal life.
Genesis 3:15 (CSB)
15 I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
Isaiah 53:5 (CSB)
5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
Romans 5:6–8 (CSB)
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. 8 But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 Peter 2:24 (CSB)
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
