Happy Easter!
We have followed Jesus on his way to the Cross, after he set his face toward Jerusalem, the places he went and the people he met as he made his final journey, from the Samaritians, where we see that when the right people find jesus it can change their entire community, and sometimes the right people are the people we least expect. to Jericho, where God has often done the impossible, tearing down walls so that people can find him, to Bethany Where Jesus showed he had power over death, and we learn there is a balance needed between worship and ministry, then to Jerusalem where Jesus was not the coming king they expected, but rather than defeating the romans overturned the tables in the temple, because the religous leaders had become corrupt or complacent. Then on Friday Jesus died on the Cross for our sins and we learned exectly what it took to make peace, and how his death atoned for the sins of all so that mankind would not have to be seperate from God anymore. and jesus was buried in a tomb.
John 19:38–42 ESV
After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
THey burried jesus, but they were not able to put him in his own tomb, but had to use one nearby, and then they didn’t have time to prepare the body for burial, though they had many of the spices ready.
Matthew 27:62–66 ESV
The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
THe Preists remebered that Jesus talked about coming back from the dead!
they set a guard, - four soldiers - perhaps 8 taking shifts.
Matthew 28:1–8 ESV
Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
THe Angel smites the guard. and rolls away the stone. then tells the women that Jesus is not there.
Luke 24:10–11 ESV
Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.
Jesus disciples don’t even believe that Jesus came back from the dead - the Priests and Pharisees knew Jesus had talked about it, but his own disciples had forgotten.
John 20:3–10 ESV
So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.
Jesus and John race to the tomb, John beats him, but peter goes in, and Jesus’s body isn’t there! and the Angel is gone as well.
Mary think that maybe they moved the Body of Jesus somewhere else,
Perhaps Joseph of arimathea moved Jesus to a different tomb during the night,
Perhaps the soldiers put Jesus in a different tomb in order to keep the disciples from stealing the body.
Even when she sees the angels she thinks they moved the body of Jesus.
Then Jesus appears, and mary magdalene is the first to see the risen Lord Jesus
As a Woman, Her tesitimony would not have even been accepted in a roman court of law.
She tells the disciples. Do they believe her yet?
Luke 24:13–27 ESV
That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
These disciples are not part of the 12, as far as we can tell.
Jesus starts talking with them, pretends not to know what they are talking about, and then points to all the scriptures that talk about him
Emmaus is 7 miles from jerusalem, most people walk about 2-3 miles per hour, so they had roughly 3 hours to talk with Jesus.
Church i do not have 3 hours to talk about how all of the old testament points to Jesus, and even if I did, i do not Think I could cover all of that in that short of an amount of time.
depending on how you count them, Jesus fulfilled almost 500 old testament prophecies.
Chart of Bible References
Genesis 3:15 ESV
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Jesus will crush the serpants head, while also being crushed.
Genesis 22:6–8 ESV
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
When God called abraham to sacrifice Isaac, Isaac was like Jesus Carrying the wood he would be sacrificed on.
God stopped abraham, and then God provided the lamb
His own son Jesus
By all tradition, this happened on the same hill where Jesus was crucified.
Leviticus 16:7–10 ESV
Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for Azazel. And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord and use it as a sin offering, but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.
This is part of the ritual on yom Kippur, the day of atonement, two Goats are brouhgt before the preist, one is slaughtered for sacrifice, and the other is sent away into the wilderness
The one that is sacrificed, it’s blood atones for the sins of the people
some translations say this is the scapegoat- the goat that got away,
the Goat for Azazel represents the sins of the people being driven away
But this is reflected in the trial of Jesus, when both JEsus and Barabbas are brought before the people, and the priest demands that barabbas, the sinner be set free, and Jesus, the pure be crucified
And so Jesus’s blood atones for our sin, while sinners like barabbas are set free.
Isaiah 53:4–6 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah saw that christ would be beaten, and pierced, and would take all of our sin upon himself.
All of these, and many more Jesus tells his disicples as they walk to Emmaus, he has to convince them that Jesus really did do everything that the Old testament required.
Luke 24:28–35 ESV
So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
They invite this stranger in to eat with them and he breaks bread - like he did on passover, and they recognize him.
Jesus is not only alive, he is the Messiah they had waited for
They run back to Jeruslaem
Probably takes an hour of running.
Luke 24:36–49 ESV
As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Jesus appears to all of the disciples, just appearing, and he talks with them, and they touch him and see the scars on his hands and feet.
and he is hungry
He still is human
Then he does the same thing with them all, taking them through the Bible and teaching them how it all points towards his coming, his death, and his resurrection.
Church this is my challenge for you, look into the word of God and see how many references to Jesus you can find as you read it.
HE then gives them a mission, but tells them to wait, wait until they are clothed with power from on high.
Church waiting is sometime the hardest thing to do.
What we celebrate today is the victory over death and the grave.
Romans 6:3–11 ESV
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Church If we follow Jesus, if we live like Jesus, if we are baptized in the name of Jesus, though we may die here on earth, we will be raised from the dead like he was!
Death no longer has a hold on those who follow Christ.
Do you follow Christ?
His life proved he was the Son of God, the Messiah, the Foretold savior of the World
His Death atoned for the sins of the world in line with God’s own laws on the subject
His resurection is the hope of Vicotry of Sin and Death, had he not been raised it would have all have been for nothing.
Are you willing to follow him in his life, death, and ressurection.
Are you willing to follow him on the road to Calvary
Are you willing to follow him fromm calvary to new life?
