Call to Worship - Psalm 22
1 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my groaning. 2 O my God, I call by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. 3 Yet You are holy, Enthroned upon the praises of Israel. 4 In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You rescued them. 5 To You they cried out and were granted escape; In You they trusted and were not disappointed.
6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; They smack their lip, they wag their head, saying, 8 “Commit yourself to Yahweh; let Him rescue him; Let Him deliver him, because He delights in him.” 9 Yet You are He who brought me out of the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts. 10 Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb.
11 Be not far from me, for distress is near; For there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open wide their mouth at me, As a lion that tears and roars. 14 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.
16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots. 19 But You, O Yahweh, be not far off; O my Strength, hasten to my help. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword, My only life from the power of the dog.
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion; From the horns of the wild oxen You have answered me. 22 I will surely recount Your name to my brothers; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23 You who fear Yahweh, praise Him; All you seed of Jacob, glorify Him, And stand in awe of Him, all you seed of Israel. 24 For He has not despised and He has not abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; And He has not hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard. 25 Of You is my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him.
26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise Yahweh. May your heart live forever! 27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to Yahweh, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is Yahweh’s And He rules over the nations. 29 All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive. 30 Their seed will serve Him; It will be recounted about the Lord to the coming generation.
Invocation
Invocation
Leader: Let us pray.
People: Almighty God, who through your Son
overcame death
and opened to us the gate of everlasting life,
grant that we who celebrate our Lord's
resurrection
may arise from the death of our sin
through the renewal of your Holy Spirit
and may hear and obey your living Word
of truth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who now lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit,
one God forever. Alleluia, amen!
Scripture Reading - Matthew 27:17-28:6
17 So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that because of envy they had delivered Him over. 19 Now while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.
21 But the governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then, what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let Him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil did He do?” But they were crying out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” 24 Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to that yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified. 27 Then when the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, they gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
31 When they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. 32 And as they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross. 33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He did not want to drink. 35 And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots.
36 And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 38 At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 “He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 And the robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words. 45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 And immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them were saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
51 And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was God’s Son!” 55 And many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him.
56 Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. 57 Now when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.
1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. 3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards quaked from fear of him and became like dead men. 5 And the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6 “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
May those who have ears to hear, hear the inspired word of God
Let us pray
Psalm 22 and Matthew 27,
So profound was the prophecy of Psalm 22 by David, King of Israel, that Matthew, writing his gospel in Hebrew would devote an entire chapter to showing to the nation of Israel how the crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus fulfilled with absolute perfection the words of this Psalm. How could those who had sung this song in worship for years and years not have seen the fulfillment of this prophecy in the perfect obedience of Jesus?
In the same way, there are words that we have heard for years and years but we may have forgotten their significance.
This morning I would like to give you 8 words, 8 terms that are seen in Matthew 27
(1) Resurrection
the physical death of Jesus. Jesus did not die spiritually. Before this day Jesus said that he would be like Jonah and be in the grave 3 days Mt 12:40, Jesus said that he would suffer and die Luke 24:46, Jesus said that he would be lifted up John 12:32, Jesus said that he was the resurrection and the life John 11:25, and in John 2:19 Jesus said that if they destroyed the temple of his body he would rise it up in 3 days.
6 “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
(2) Justification
to be declared righteous - we think of it in terms of our salvation but in Mt 27 Jesus is declared to be righteous, not by those who had spent three years with him but by Pilate’s wife and the centurion who was at the cross.
Pontius Pilate’s wife in Matthew 27:19
19 Now while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.”
54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was God’s Son!”
We are not righteous but He who is perfectly holy was righteous and by His righteousness we are saved
Justification reminds us that Jesus Christ has done everything necessary for our salvation. He paid the penalty that our sins deserved by His sacrificial death on the cross. His death satisfied God's justice and turned away His wrath from us. Jesus also lived a perfect life by His righteous obedience to God's law.
Jesus was also declared righteous by His Father by his resurrection
(3) Forsaken
In Mt 27:46 Jesus cries out the first words of Ps 22.
the silence of the Father: at His birth, at his baptism, on the mount of transfiguration. But now silence.
The son endure the cross, the son endured the sin of the world being placed upon Him.
v 45 - the darkness - the darkness, the absence of light, symbolizes the forsaking of Jesus
All the beatings, all the whipping, the nails, the mocking - nothing was as great as the separation the Son, the one who from eternity was in perfect communion with the Father, endured .
(4) Finished
It is finished. A term that means paid in full.
But more than that, Jesus fully obeyed. Jesus was fully obedient.
The giving of Jesus a drink in v 48 fulfilled the prophecy of Psalm 22:15
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.
It is finished - the separation from the Father was complete. The Son was victorious
(5) Substitution
Barabbas is released, Jesus is crucified - the symbol of substitution
(6) Satisfaction
In Mt 27, the curtain is torn, the tombs are emptied in vs 51-53
God is satisfied, and our sin is removed for us in the perfect atonement of Jesus.
And this leads to
(7) Double imputation
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
It is both the taking on of our sin and the giving of His righteousness that achieves our salvation Our sin given to Jesus, His righteousness given to us. This we see at the cross. The wrath of God given to Jesus, a wrath we deserved. And the blessings of Jesus’ sacrifice given to us, a blessing we did not deserve and did not earn. But given as a gift.
(8) Coronation
When was Jesus proclaimed to be King?
In Mt 27:59 Jesus is placed in a new tomb. He was not left on the cross, he was not thrown into the burning garbage dump outside the city called gehenna He was given the burial of a King.
And then He would rise.
He is risen, He is risen indeed.
1 Man of sorrows what a name
for the Son of God, who came
ruined sinners to reclaim:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
2 Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
in my place condemned he stood,
sealed my pardon with his blood:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
3 Guilty, helpless, lost were we;
blameless Lamb of God was he,
sacrificed to set us free:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
4 He was lifted up to die;
"It is finished" was his cry;
now in heaven exalted high:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
5 When he comes, our glorious King,
all his ransomed home to bring,
then anew this song we'll sing:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was being betrayed took bread, 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.
