Jesus - The Son of David

KEY TEXT
Acts 13:22 “And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’”
1 Samuel 16:1–13 The call of David - a man after God’s own heart
Ecclesiastes 9:10 “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”
God choses (elects) some to certain service.
Background: Israel chose a king, Saul 1 Sam 8:1-5 a man tall, handsome by sight. 1 Sa 9:2
But he was petty, arrogant, suffered from approbation, was jealous, and disobedient to God.
God rejects Saul and chooses another.

God’s Choices are Sovereign

God’s choice involves Preparation

He has already chosen His man and prepared him. Is working behind the scenes

God has a Plan

The events that brought us David were not a coincidence
A look at the genealogy of Matthew 1:5 “Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse,” Jesse was David’s father.
Judges 2 Rahab - married Salmon
Ruth 4:20 Ruth and Boaz - David’s great grandparents

God has the power / authority to see His plan to completion

“I have”1 Samuel 16:1 “Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.””
We should never say, “God bless my plans” It should be as Jesus said, “not my will, but Thine, will be done.” Luke 22:42

God’s Methods are Surprising

1 Sa 16:6-13
God sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king.
Jesse’s sons are paraded in front of Samuel as candidates.

Suprising in who He rejects

Eliab is first and logical to pick the oldest, however God see’s something man does not - the heart 1 Samuel 17:28 “Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”” He was jealous, proud, insolent himself. An angry man.
Even Samuel in impressed with Eliab, but we are not to look at the outer man. Men don’t see what God sees.
Don’t lay hands hastily Paul wrote to Timothy 1 Tim 5 22
Deacons, Pastors, Preachers need time to be proven.

Surprising in His requirements

God passes over the one we choose and chooses the one we pass over.
What is on your list of requirements for a missionary? Pastor?
Degrees, Experience, Abilities, Intelligence, Looks?
God looks for people of integrity, loyalty, honesty, character, faithful and holy.
A good job description for ministry written by Earnest Shackleton

Surprising in His search location

“The youngest” - not even named
With the sheep - a humble, but great training “field”
working while others are being considered

Ready, Willing, and Able

Are You Ready?

:11-13
1 Samuel 16:5 “And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.”
The rejected sons were sanctified - man clean, ready for service
David was out in the field working - not made ritually clean.
But he was always ready for God’s work.

Are You Willing?

David was humble, a shepherd. He was willing to do a lonely, dirty job because that was what he had to do. When he was anointed he went back to his job, after being with Saul in the court, he went back to his job. He was willing to be the servant, to be humble. His brothers saw a shepherd boy, a useless boy. God saw his heart and saw integrity, faithfulness, responsibility and character. God saw a king.
If we don’t serve God in the smallest things will He trust us with the big things? “Grow where you are planted”

Are You Able?

List your achievements. Remember our ways are not His ways.
God wants someone who walks with Him. This was not David’s first time with God. David had spent many moments in sweet fellowship. Memorizing Scripture. Walking in His way. Talking to His Lord.
God knew David and chose him because He knew him.
And David knew God
1 Samuel 17:37 “Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!””
1 Samuel 17:45 “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
