Reading

Genesis 8:20–9:17 ESV
Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.” Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
Malachi 4:1–6 ESV
“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts. “Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

The Great Day of God - Day of Judgement

Malachi 4:1–3 ESV
“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.
Sun (light & heat)
Destructive - Fire
“the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble”
“The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, … so that it will leave them neither root nor branch
day of great suffering
Delight & Comfort - Calves ging out leaping from the stall
“For you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings”
“You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall”
not perfect but honestly refere God’s Name
Failing sinners, yet mourn over sin and hunger and thirst for righteousness
day of joy and celebration
“you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet”
When?
“on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts”
Jesus: Parable of 10 Virgins (Matt 25:1-12) - waiting for bridegroom
Half of the made no proper preparations and could not keep lamps burning
Reflected their careless lack of real devotion to the bridegroom
They went an bought oil but found themselves locked out from the celebrations
Many will foolishly look forward to heaven, but for all their religion they never had faith and love for Jesus
When they knock at the door...
Matthew 25:12 ESV
But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’
End of sermon on the mount..
Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
The Evangelical Pharisee: There is a church of sound doctrine and respectable living, but with the stench of no love for Jesus!
Why does God give such terrible warnings?
He wants people to wake up to the danger so they might repent and be saved.
It is probably one of the hardest things, in the world, for a respected church member for many years to own up and confess they never actually experienced the new birth
That in all honesty the have no experience of sins forgiven and of true love for Jesus
But if that is the case, and someone has the guts and the integrity to own up to that, break his heart before God, tell him of his state and beg for forgiveness through the blood of Christ and ask for the Holy Spirit to truly flood his life, then he can be absolutely assured of the most loving welcome and reception from God. He warns us because he loves us.
The warnings of the last day, are the tokens of his particular love, that those who are warned may respond to God’s affection.

Preperation for the Last Day

Malachi 4:4–6 ESV
“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
Salvation can never be earned
Abraham was justified by faith
The law was provided to remind the people of their need of a Saviour
Matthew 11:13–14 ESV
For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.
It leads us to Christ that we might be justified by faith
Galatians 3:19 ESV
Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary.
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes”
Matthew 11:13–14 ESV
For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.
John the Baptist
Came from the Wilderness in sackcloth
How might shall we be saved?
John 3:18–21 ESV
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
“lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction”
Malachi 4:6 ESV
And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
For Jews, Israel was the Land of Promise and teh centre of their outlook fort the future
God says “Unless you listen to the ministry of John the Baptist, I am finished with you”
Sadly, Jews generally rejected the Messiah and the warning fo Malachi came to pass
The Jews were turned out of the land, the sacrificial system collapsed and they have been faithless to God and each other
The door of salvation still stands open for the Jews, but it is only as they turn to Jesus that they will be saved.
Galatians 5:6 ESV
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 ESV
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
True faith expresses itself not just by adherence to biblical doctrine, or an outwardly pure life, but by a life of heartfelt service and love.
1 John 4:16 ESV
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
“he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers”
Malachi 4:6 ESV
And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
Rebellious ‘Christian’ teenagers who view parents with resentment are not prepared for the Day of Judgement.
Unloving ‘Christian’ parents who make little or no attempt to understand their youngsters and the pressures of the world they live in are unprepared for the Day of Judgement.
I am not saying that every Christian family must be perfect. But there must be love there, both ways across the generation gap.
A Christian Church which is beset by a generation gap within its ranks is hardly pleasing to the Lord
Young: energy, passion and challenge how things are done
Old: have stood firm despite great opposition, and gained spiritual wisdom
Malachi is pertinent to our times
Has apathy and cynicism entered the church?
Does the church have the passion and love for God it ought to have?
Are we ready for the Great Day of the Lord?
