Delivered yet Waiting Psalm 40 Celebrate the Lord’s deliverance (1–3) • After long periods of waiting (“waiting” x2) • Initiated by God’s listening ear • From despair to security Response: sing a new song for all to hear Trust in the Lord’s deliverance (4–5) • Make the LORD the object of your trust. • Reject the deceitful help offered outside of God. • God delivers you because he loves you (Ps 139:17) Response: number the innumerable love acts of God Worship the Lord for his deliverance (6–10) • Do not offer mere religious ceremony (1 Sam 15:22). • Offer yourself to God in delighted obedience. • “open ear”: the posture of a student (cf. Is 50:4) • “Scroll of the book”: King’s personal copy (Deut 17) • Only One ever did this perfectly (Heb 10:5–7) Response: tell the good news to the congregation Wait on the Lord for deliverance (11–17) • Place your hope in God’s mercy, love, and faithfulness. • Cry to God for help and justice. • Express your needs openly to God in dependence.
