Today, we approach a passage of scripture that most people have probably never heard a sermon on. This account sounds too fantastic to be true. At first, it will sound to many of you like a sci-fi novel. But I would suggest to you that this is only the case because we, as God’s people, have forgotten the simple truths. The Bible is a supernatural book. In creation, there exists both a physical world and a supernatural world.
At least on the surface, we have no trouble believing in Angels and demons. We have no problem believing that Pharoah’s servants could turn staves into serpents alongside Moses. I think we would agree that there is supernatural power from both Yahweh and the evil one.
So today I am going to remind you that if you lose sight of a supernatural worldview and supernatural view of scripture. Then you will have trouble taking seriously the following claim found in
Ephesians 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
I want you to look at this verse like it is the first time you have seen it. What do you notice? There are other rulers that are not flesh and blood. Do you see it? These evil spiritual rulers have had a profound impact on our world. So, who are these rulers? Who are these cosmic powers of darkness and spiritual forces in the heavens?
What if I told you that the ancient peoples did not just worship stone idols but rather evil entities with actual powers.
Today I want to connect a lot of dots for you. Strangely enough, this passage, I believe, even explains both demons, ancient gods and even so-called aliens.
So today, I am going to hopefully take you on a journey that most of you were not prepared to go on. We're going to look at a cosmic struggle found in the book of Genesis, and if we pay attention, we will see this same thread throughout all scripture. There is more to the struggle than just meets the eye. We are talking about supernatural or spiritual warfare.
To start this journey, we need to back up to Genesis 3:15
15 I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel. [1]
So, right after the sin of Adam and Eve. God makes this pronouncement to the serpent, presumably Lucifer. He says the two sets of offspring are going to be at war. Eventually, through the line of Eve, a deliverer will come that will crush the head of the serpent. So, we intuitively understand this is a physical line. Jesus would be born of flesh and blood. But then, what do we do with the offspring of the serpent in this passage? Is one real flesh and blood and the other offspring metaphorical? If this is true, then we would have no reason to believe that the promise of the deliverer through the line of Eve is also speaking metaphorically, but we know that is not true because it happened. Jesus was born of flesh yet God.
So this proclamation is made, and we see this account just three chapters over.
Genesis 6:1–4 CSB
When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives for themselves. And the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain with mankind forever, because they are corrupt. Their days will be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.

I. Who are the Sons of God?

The term Son’s of God comes from the hebrew language
בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים, beney ha'elohim
Job 1:6 CSB
One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them.
The first observation I want you to make is that Satan was with the sons of God. He was one of them. To present oneself wasn’t just to say hello, it was to give a report. Satan although rebellious was once a son of God.
We see another account of these beings.
Job 38:4–7 CSB
Where were you when I established the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who fixed its dimensions? Certainly you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? What supports its foundations? Or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Now, I want you to notice that the morning stars and sons of God rejoiced at the creation of the earth. So they existed before the earth was created. One cannot rejoice at the creation if one wasn’t around to witness it. Notice the location and description of these beings morning stars and Sons of God. These beings area associated with the heavens.
So we see that Lucifer an Angel was with the Sons of God, he was one of them.
This term :sons of god” in the Old Testament is used of the Angelic race.
It is not a term denoting their lineage but rather there position. They are god like…not God. In the same way after our redemption we are conformed to the image of Christ and are called the sons of God.
So all of these angelic beings came to give a report including Satan. We see that these being are actively involved in the affairs of creation. To what extent the the text doesn’t tell us. But we do know that God had them involved in governing. In Deuteronomy there is a reference to the tower of babel event. Where God divides up the nations according to the number of the Son’s of God. Now some of your translations will say according to the number of the sons of Israel. There is just one problem with that translation of this verse. During the tower of babel Isreal did not exist yet. In fact, if you look at the Hebrew you will see again bene ha elohim. Sons of God.
Deuteronomy 32:8 ESV
When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.
Then we see this pronouncement of judgement made by God because of the sons of God rebellion.
Psalm 82:1 CSB
God stands in the divine assembly; he pronounces judgment among the gods:
Psalm 82:2 CSB
“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
Psalm 82:6–7 CSB
I said, “You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High. However, you will die like humans and fall like any other ruler.”
Psalm 82:8 CSB
Rise up, God, judge the earth, for all the nations belong to you.
We see this same idea in Exodus
Exodus 12:12 CSB
“I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the Lord; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt.
God will execute judgement against the gods of Egypt.
If you need anymore convincing that this is not speaking metaphorically we will turn to an account in Daniel.
Daniel 11:37–39 CSB
He will not show regard for the gods of his ancestors, the god desired by women, or for any other god, because he will magnify himself above all. Instead, he will honor a god of fortresses—a god his ancestors did not know—with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches. He will deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. He will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, making them rulers over many and distributing land as a reward.
Do you see that this evil king being described is being aided supernaturally by the help of a foreign god.
There are powerful evil supernatural rulers beyond just satan that are involved in the affairs of mankind.
So what is this passage in Genesis suggesting?

II. A Great Act of Rebellion Occurred

Genesis 6:1–2 CSB
When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives for themselves.
Notice with me there is a clear distinction between mankind and the “sons of God”. This distinction is emphasized again with the term “daughters of mankind”. We see clear lines drawn between the sons of God and the daughters of mankind.
So according to this passage these Angels violated God’s natural law and procreated with mankind.
No some of you are thinking this is crazy. Is there any other passage of scripture that makes reference to this event.
Yes. there is . Turn with me to Jude 6-7
Jude 6–7 NASB 95
And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.
Now we know the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah are sexual perversions and we see this phrase “since in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality” This phrase is comparing the sins of these angels that left their own domain and defiled woman with the sins of those in Sodom and Gomorrah. Both of these sins were sexual in nature. God punished these two cities with fire and in the same way punished these wicked angels with eternal fire.

III. Results of this Rebellion

Genesis 6:3–4 CSB
And the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain with mankind forever, because they are corrupt. Their days will be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.
This resulted in the creation of the Nephilim.
I want you to notice these ideas are connected. The Nephilim were the descendants of this unholy union. They were known as the race of Giants or the famous men.
They are mentioned in Numbers 13:33
Numbers 13:33 CSB
We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim! To ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and we must have seemed the same to them.”
They also are called by different names
Deuteronomy 2:10–11 CSB
The Emim, a great and numerous people as tall as the Anakim, had previously lived there. They were also regarded as Rephaim, like the Anakim, though the Moabites called them Emim.
Joshua 11:21–22 CSB
At that time Joshua proceeded to exterminate the Anakim from the hill country—Hebron, Debir, Anab—all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them with their cities. No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites, except for some remaining in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.
You should recognize one those cities, Gath. This is the city from which Goliath and his brothers resided.
This passage also mentions the idea of Famous men.
Now if you were to do a quick google search you would find that most cultures have this same story.
The Greeks/Romans called them demi-gods or titans.
the Babylonians
Indians
Egyptians
akkadians
even the ancient Chinese.
They all have a version of this same story that gods came down from heaven and produced half-god/half man beings. Then we find this same account in the Bible itself.
So why did Moses choose to insert this information right before the flood narrative? At first glance it seems out of place. Is it just a interesting unconnected piece of information? No.
The very next verse tells us why.
Genesis 6:5–6 CSB
When the Lord saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time, the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and he was deeply grieved.
Because these beings had a profound impact on our world for evil. Moses inserted this information as a way to explain why wickedness was widespread. Not only did the people worship these gods but they were lead into all sorts of evil because of them.

III. Why does this matter?

Now some of you are wondering why would I spend an entire sermon on this idea? What difference does this information make for me today?
Because there is a supernatural cosmic battle for control. Remeber satan fell because he wanted to be like the most-high. He wants to be worshipped. He wants to control and since he was cast from heaven, what realm does he seek to control? ours.
It is only in this context that Ephesians 6:12
Ephesians 6:12 CSB
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
There is a battle taking place and unfortunately the American church has lost its natural ability to see the world through a supernatural lens.
Now at the beginning of this sermon i told you that this passage even explains the idea of aliens.
Believe it or not I hear this question alot. If Aliens were found what impact would that have in our faith? How could we rectify the Bible with the appearance of intelligent life from the heavens?
It seems like governments of the world, the science community, really want us to believe in alien life. So much so their is an official government website dedicated to this subject.
The show ancient aliens takes evidence that really points to Gen. 6 being true and twist it into a narrative that suggest that these being created life on earth. By definition they would be considered a god to us.
So I will invite you once again to look at Eph. 6:12
Ephesians 6:12 CSB
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
What do you notice now? What association is made? Spiritual forces in the heavens.
Church family this deception has happened before in Genesis 6. and scripture tells us it will happen again and it is associated with a time of great wickedness. It called the end of days.
Matthew 24:37 CSB
As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.
Do you see it? The first time this happened. Evil beings from the heavens came down and inserted themselves in the affairs of men even attempting to create their own race in order to dominate and rule. They lead corrupted man into a new age of wickedness. They masqueraded as gods and rulers. So God intervened. He brought judgement on man for following after them.
The second time this takes place Christ at the appointed time will return.
I am preaching this odd sermon today because I don’t want you to be deceived or concerned. The alien narrative that is being pushed is directly related to events that are foretold in scripture.

IV. How then Should we respond.

2 Thessalonians 2:1–11 CSB
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters, not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God’s temple, proclaiming that he himself is God. Don’t you remember that when I was still with you I used to tell you about this? And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan’s working, with every kind of miracle, both signs and wonders serving the lie, and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie,
2 Thessalonians 2:12 CSB
so that all will be condemned—those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness.
For the saved in Christ:
1. We stay firmly rooted in the truth of scripture. Those who love the truth will not be deceived.
2. We recognize the plans of the enemy at work and we.
Ephesians 5:15 CSB
Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise—
3. We devote ourselves to prayer both for ourselves but also for the lost.
For those who are rejecting the truth of the gospel.
Repent before it is to late. If you do not ,you will be deceived. There is coming a strong delusion that you will not be able to resist outside of the holy spirit living in you.
