THE MORNING EVERYTHING CHANGED

INTRO

- THIS IS THE SINGULAR MOST IMPORTANT EVENT IN ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY: ON THIS MORNING, EVERYTHING CHANGED

BUT THIS S NOT MERELY AN ETERNAL STATEMENT; IT IS A RIGHT NOW – REAL LIFE 2024 AND BEYOND TRUTH:

?”

· YOU SEE, THE WORLD IS LIVING, BUT IT IS LIVING IN THE REALM OF DEATH

1. THE RESURRECTION CHANGED WHAT REALLY MATTERS (16:21-23)

Matthew 16:21 ESV
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Matthew 16:22–23 ESV
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

WHAT WE SEE IN PETER’S STATEMENT IS A SELF PROTECTION THAT SEES SECURITY IN THIS LIFE AS ULTIMATE: HE ONLY SEES THIS LIFE AS VALUABLE AND JESUS SAYS, THAT IS LOGIC THAT COMES NOT FROM THE FATHER BUT FROM THE DEVIL

- A PRE-OCCUPATION WITH THIS LIFE IS ACTUALLY WHAT IT MEANS TO BE DEAD

- YOU SEE

- WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SECURE?

- IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE SECURE?

o IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT EVERYTHING YOU HAVE YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE?

§ YOUR JOB…IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE SECURITY

§ WHAT YOU HAVE: CAR, HOME, ETC

§ YOUR LIFE: HEALTH, MOBILITY ETC

§ YOUR CHILDREN???

o HERE IS WHAT I KNOW ABOUT BEING SECURE: SECURITY IS SUSPECT

- THE TRUTH IS THAT WE ARE NEVER, REALLY SECURE

o JOB: WE ARE ONE MISTAKE, ONE CUT BACK AWAY

- THE TRUTH IS THAT WE ARE CONSCIOUSLY ALWAYS LIVING NOT TO LOSE AND WHEN YOU ARE LIVING NOT TO LOSE, YOU NEVER TRULY LIVE…

IT IS HAVING A LOVE FOR THE WORLD - HOW DOES THIS LOOK?

1 John 2:16 ESV
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
James 4:4 ESV
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

2. THE RESURRECTION CHANGED WHAT IS MEANS TO WIN AND LOSE (16:24-26)

Matthew 16:24 ESV
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Matthew 16:25–26 ESV
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

- SECURITY, WINNING LOSING, WHAT IF I TOLD YOU THAT JESUS WANTS YOU TO WIN.

- ETC – THAT LANGUAGE

o I HAVE COME THAT THEY MAY HAVE LIFE AND LIFE MORE ABUNDANTLY:

Psalm 16:11 ESV
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

- BUT WHAT IF EXPERIENCING THE VICTORY OF THE RESURRECTION MEANT LOSING WINNING IN LIFE MEANT LOSING

Philippians 3:7–8 ESV
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
Philippians 3:9–11 ESV
and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

o JESUS MODELED THIS

Luke 22:42 (ESV)
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
Philippians 2:6 ESV
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Philippians 2:8–9 ESV
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
Philippians 2:10–11 ESV
so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

WHAT LOOKED LIKE A LOSS WAS A WIN

SO WHEN YOU TRUST IN CHRIST WHAT LOOKS LIKE LOSING IS ACTUALLY WINNING

PAUL TEACHES US THAT THIS IS THE WIN FOR CHRISTIANS

NOT THAT LIFE WILL BE MAGICAL OR BEAUTIFUL ALL THE TIME: LIFE IS HARD AND EVERY DAY IS FILLED WITH DISAPPOINTMENTS , PAINS, STRUGGLES, FEARS ETC.. BUT...

Romans 8:35 ESV
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Romans 8:36 ESV
As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
Romans 8:37 ESV
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

THE RESURRECTION HAS CHANGED EVERYTHING

3. THE RESURRECTION CHANGED HOW WE WILL BE REPAID

Matthew 16:27 ESV
For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

- NOT OUR VERSION OF BEING GOOD

- GOD’S VERSION OF WORKS IS A WORK

o JESUS GIVES THEM BREAD: JOHN 6:27-29

John 6:27 ESV
Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
John 6:28–29 ESV
Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

o WHAT MUST WE DO TO BE SAVED ACTS 16:29-31-

Acts 16:29–31 ESV
And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
o 1 JOHN 3:23
1 John 3:23 ESV
And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.

- THE RESURRECTION CHANGED HOW GOD WOULD VIEW HUMANITY WHO BELIEVE IN JESUS.

o ETC

o IF YOU BELIEVE IT CAN CHANGE HOW HE VIEWS YOU

- OUTSIDE OF CHRIST YOU ARE AN ENEMY OF GOD BECAUSE FOR GOD, ONLY CHRIST COUNTS

o ROMANS 1:4

Romans 1:4 ESV
and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

THE RESURRECTION CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING FOR YOU
