AG:
The Holy Spirit is not enthusiasm. I have found enthusiasm that hummed with excitement, and the Holy Spirit was nowhere to be found there at all; and I have found the Holy Spirit when there has not been much of what we call enthusiasm present.7
A. W. Tozer
TS: Jesus speaks of the Holy Spirit who will come from the Father. He spells out more details about the role the Holy Spirit plays in our lives.
RS: As we will see, the role of the Holy Spirit is vital in every day of our lives.

1) The Prerequisite (16:5-7)

John 16:5–7 NKJV
“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
Jesus says He must go away
Their hearts were filled with sorrow v. 6
So much so, they didn’t even ask where He was going (v.5)
They were consumed with what would happen to them instead of what Jesus was about to endure.
They didn’t like all of His talk about leaving
That wasn’t what they expected to hear!
They wanted and expected Him to bring about His eternal Kingdom THEN
They didn’t understand his need to die for sins
Unless He goes away, the Holy Spirit will not come v. 7
This passage is a good example of progressive revelation.
Jesus didn’t dump all the teachings about the Holy Spirit on the disciples at once.
He had spread it out throughout His ministry
Spoon feeding them and giving them time to grow.
Teaching as we need to know truths
Earlier teachings:
1st Life-Giving Power John 7:37-39
John 7:37–39 NKJV
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
2nd Indwelling Presence John 14:16-17
John 14:16–17 NKJV
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
3rd Teaching Ministry John 14:26
John 14:26 NKJV
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
4th Empowered Witness John 15:26
John 15:26 NKJV
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
Now Jesus discusses more of the Spirit’s work
It was better for them (and us) that He go away
In going away, they would enter the time of the Holy Spirit
After He left, He would send the Holy Spirit
Jesus would directly send the Spirit.
He fulfilled that approximately 40 or so days after speaking these words.

2) The Purpose (16:8-15)

He will come to accomplish a fourfold purpose.

To convict sinners (16:8-10)

John 16:8–10 NKJV
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
Convict of
Convict here means convince
His role is to convince us, not condemn us!
Sin John 16:9
John 16:9 NKJV
of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
Sin is a violation of the Law of God
The biggest sin is
the sin of unbelief and rejection of Jesus
This is the only sin that condemns people to Hell.
All commit sin, but those who remain in their unwillingness to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior are condemned to eternity in Hell.
Righteousness John 16:10
John 16:10 NKJV
of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
The Holy Spirit convinces us of true righteousness.
Judaism had fallen into a shallow focus on eternal appearances instead of true righteousness.
Jesus confronted that when here on Earth many times
After He returned to the Father, He sent the Spirit to continue in that role.

To condemn Satan (16:11)

John 16:11 NKJV
of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Satan, the ruler of this world, is judged
The Holy Spirit judges the world under Satan’s rule.
The world’s view is skewed
They are incapable of judging right and wrong correctly
Satan has perverted the judgment of the world and turned people away from believing in The Messiah.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
He was defeated at the cross!

To counsel saints (16:12-13)

John 12–21 ((3) The Fifth Spirit Statement: Authentic Guide (16:12–15))
Those who have trekked through wildernesses know that the role of a guide is crucial to one’s survival. Without a guide, everything in the vast unpopulated expanse seems to be unwelcoming. The guide is the security blanket. Your guide is a resource of information and insight when there are no roads and the faint trails that are there seem to crisscross without rhyme or reason. In situations like that, one knows the ultimate significance of a guide.
Jesus here calls the Holy Spirit our guide into truth
John 16:12–13 NKJV
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
V. 12, Jesus had more to teach but they weren’t ready for it
He had developed an outline of understanding, but the Spirit Himself would flesh it out.
V. 13 The Holy Spirit will guide into all truth
He won’t speak on His own
He will speak what He hears including foretelling things to come
This verse speaks of the work of inspiring Scripture and Illuminating it
Inspiration- God Breathed
Supernatural revelation of His word
Sadly, this is being forgotten and ignored by many
Many today say, “But that was Paul writing” Or “that was Peter”
They trust the “red letters” as being Jesus’ words. However, John 16, though in RED was penned by the Apostle John. It was written by God through inspiration.
GOD was the author, Paul, Peter, John, and all other “writers” where the pen in His hand
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
The Spirit inspired it and illuminates it:
illumination in the spiritual sense is “turning on the light” of understanding.
He guides us through the word to know truth!
He enables us to understand it
In fact, that is something only God can do!
1 Corinthians 2:10–16 NKJV
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
Natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit
They are spiritually discerned

To Champion the Savior (16:14-15)

John 16:14–15 NKJV
He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
V. 14 He will glorify Jesus
He will take what is Jesus’ and declare it
Hebrews 1:1–2 NKJV
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
V. 15 All three, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are in perfect harmony.
God seeks His glory
