Review:
First nine chapters of Luke we discussed who Luke was… Gentile doctor.
He starts his story with the parallel stories of two boys born within six months of each other, cousins.
John the Baptist and Jesus.
Then Jesus ministry is launched with and to the poor, those of low social status, OUTSIDERS.
Upside down kingdom - reversal of current value systems…
End of chapter 9 - Jesus is the new Moses, about to make a great exodus freeing everyone from sins tyranny.
Chapter 9 - Jesus begins to lead his new followers toward Jerusalem.
Teaching in parables along the journey.
Here he sends out the 70 to announce his coming.
Teaches about prayer and trust, money, possessions and generosity.
There is this picture of a journey that is taking place.
Continues to reach out to the poor, outcasts, Zacchaeus, Samaritans…
They are touched by him and joins his kingdom…
In this setting Jesus says:
lk19.10
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Along the way Jesus is having dinners with the religious leaders.
Prodigal son vs older brother
Message: is the cost of the ticket to enter His kingdom is repentance and humility.
Leaders reject him and his message.
He is now at Jerusalem, ready for Passover.
He enters weeping as the poor proclaim him king but the leaders denounce him.
He is greatly saddened because he knows they are on a path of rejecting him in search of a liberator and that would lead to Roman General Titus destroying Israel in 70 AD.
Jesus cleanses the Temple at the end of chapter 19…
What is significant about that?
Passover meal
What is significant about that?
Bread? Wine?
Jesus is arrested.
Pilot proclaimed Jesus was innocent 3 times.
Herod finds nothing to accuse him of.
Pilot finally condemns him to death.
As Jesus is crucified he forgives.
Offers hope to a criminal.
Dies. Buried.
Chapter 24 they go to the tomb and find 2 angels - HE HAS RISEN!
24:13-32 - the road to Emmaus.
Lost hope - Jesus breaks bread for them just like he had at the last supper and their eyes are opened!
And he disappears!
There is a lot of eating in Luke… Final scene is another dinner.
Gives them the point of it all!
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
Conclusion: What have you learned about from the Gospels.
