After confessing, what do I do now?
Want to make it clear how to grow. Specifically, 3 things you need to do to put off sin:
Say no to your flesh.
Christianity inherently involves self-denial.
Not self-denial for its own sake, but for joy’s sake.
The great promise (v. 25) is that the return far outweighs the cost.
What area in your life do you need to practice self-denial? Hopefully you confessed that sin last week, but if not, take the chance tonight.
Say yes to the ways of Jesus.
It’s not enough to remove the bad; it has to replaced with holiness.
E.g. like deleting TikTok and then just switching to IG reels or YouTube shorts
E.g. folks who go from gluttony (idolizing food) to vanity (idolizing fitness)
This is why we emphasize spiritual disciplines, but it extends beyond those.
Take active steps forward.
The obvious, but true — Walking with Jesus involves taking steps.
Don’t confuse John 15 with passive sitting through church services
Give examples with drinking, porn, greed, shame, Scripture reading, sharing faith
Some are less obvious: worry (why not quote Phil. 4 and then pray?), sloth (why not set time limits to your entertainment intake?), control of the future (why not quote 2 Cor. 5:7?), gossip (confess, ask forgiveness, and encourage?)
Here’s the takeaway: Do something.
There’s no way every message every week can speak to every person, but as you continue to read the Word and confess sin in prayer, God will reveal to you the ways you need to grow.
Now do something with it. Take a step this week to become more like Jesus.
Absolutely, our salvation is dependent on Christ’s faithfulness, not our own. But that ought to make us want even more to do something.
So this week, do something.
