Intro
We started a new series Where are you Going?
We are in the race of our lives - well the race is our life
We talked about the track and what it looks like
perfectly round? Straight? Signs or refreshment stops? Shortcuts?
Honestly, for me sometimes I feel like I can see far up ahead to where I need to be going but then right in front of me is crowded or blurry or confusing. Like I can’t see the step right in front of me
This can be so frustrating for me cuz I know where I want to go but I can’t seem to see how to take the next step.
There’s nothing more embarrassing than falling in front of everyone cuz you don’t see the ground in front of you or tripping over your own feet
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was light that I could wear close to the ground so I could see my feet?
Pic of night runners
pic of lighting a path
It kind of reminds me of a verse I know.
Body
We are looking at a well known verse tonight that I think will help illuminate How to see where we are going! Anyone have a guess on the verse?
Scripture
Psalm 119:105 NIV
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Observation
What do you observe?
Why the repetition?
Are these the same phrases or 2 different meanings?
I want to read what is going on directly before and after this verse.
Psalms is a book of prayers and praises mainly from King David and it is one of my favorite books of the Bible cuz it shows the true humanness of David. This guy was definitely bi-polar - up and down, happy and mad, depressed and grateful - and God said he was a man after His own heart.
If God liked David so much with the mess that he was, what can He think of me?
I am going to read Psalm 119:97-112 which is just a snippet of what was going on here and our verse tonight is sandwiched in the middle.
What is a precept? a commandment or direction given as a rule of action or conduct.
David is talking about loving God’s words, God’s precepts, how it helps him, makes him wise, smarter than anyone else, even tho he has suffered and people are constantly laying traps for him, he has the light to carry him thru and promises to obey God til the very end!
Application
How do we apply this to our lives?
There is a reason we need a lamp/light for our feet! The path is riddled with obstacles. There is an enemy who wants you to fail. People will want to see you fall. Our own humanness constantly tries to steer us toward cliffs
This is for the saved and unsaved - last week young men will fail Isaiah 40:30
Isaiah 40:30 NIV
30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
The obstacles are there.
Even with the light, I think it is very clear that the path still has the traps, the stumbling blocks, the mud holes, the detours, the hardships, the need to know God’s word and stay disciplined
We will just be able to see it with God’s help
Specifically, with God’s word
Obviously the Word can’t help if we don’t read it.
Would you be willing to make a commitment today to get to know God’s word?
Remember it has precepts - calls to action
Will you do what it says?
