Read 1 Peter 4:1-6
1 Peter 4:1–6 ESV
1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

The purpose of the exile

1 Peter 4:1–2 ESV
1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.
Peter after talking about our conduct shifts to our thinking
To those of you scattered out there
Alone in the world
Arm yourselves with Christs thought process
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Peter and Paul remind us that as exiles in this world we must look to the next life that is ahead of us
We must endure the cross to recieve the crown
Im not saying we will all suffer and excurtiating death on the cross
and if you dont you dont receive the crown
Rather what I am saying is we must suffer well
We must endure the suffering that comes with living in this world that is filled with sin bring
We have a purpose in our endurance of this life
The crown of eternal life
This is what Peter points us to
A life where sin has ceased
A life not tied to the passions of our human flesh
A life completely consumed with the glory of God
Paul says
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
This is the exiles thought process
That since Christ has suffered we too can suffer and we can have that same mind christ has
That same purpose
That we arent living for this life
If strife comes in this life we can endure it because we know God will be glorified through it
We can live with a purpose that says the worst thing that can happen to me in this life is death and to die in this life is the a glorious thing for a believer
It means freedom and we should all look forward to that day

The Exile leaves the past in the past

1 Peter 4:3–5 ESV
3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
Peter continues to encourage the exiles in their thought process
The time is past for you to live in your flesh
You have been delivered from that way of thinking
You can stand against all types of peer pressure because you dont need to do that anymore
Understand that you have changed
Your heart of stone has been replaced with a heart of flesh
A soft heart toward the will of God
A heart that find joy in doing the will of the lord
Dont be surprised when you are maligned for not enjoying the things of the gentiles
Dont be dissapointed by this
Dont get down because Christians dont get to do anything fun
Dont give in to the peer pressure
This thing seems so good to them why would you not want to do this????
A questions for todays teens
This is so applicable for all of us but especially you all today
Your friend are finally getting a chance to experience life and taste freedom
and man is it “good”
Try it
Genesis 3:5–6 ESV
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
Keep your thinking right
Keep you mind focused on what is coming not what is
Philippians 3:12–14 ESV
12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Let God be the arbitrator and as for you endure the cross so you can receive the crown

Exiles cling to the Gospel

1 Peter 4:6 ESV
6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
