Call to Worship

3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,

nor be weary when reproved by him.

6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,

and chastises every son whom he receives.”

7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.

11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Introduction

First-Person Story:
“I told you so...”
When I was about eight-years old, my mother used to read this bedtime story called The Cross Country Cat. It was a tale of this Siamese cat who traveled through the winter wearing, well, snowshoes. It was cute. And so my dream of having such a cat was born.
Incidentally, my mom worked for a vet. She was such an awesome mom. She reached out to her network of animal shelters, hospitals, and various colleagues to find a Siamese kitty who needed a home. While I waited, I would kneel at my bedside praying that God would bless me with this kitty.
Sure enough, as good as God is, he answered. We brought home this beautiful cat; a Siamese-Snowshoe mix. Yes, that’s a breed of cat!
One day, this cat was hanging out in our kitchen. I walked up to him with my head turned sideways, like any other weird eight-year-old kid might do. My dad saw and gave me this warning: “don’t go up to him like that. He’ll scratch you.” I didn’t believe him. He was such a cool cat! He wouldn’t do that! I was both wrong and foolish.
“I told you so.” These were the words of my father when I foolishly discarded his wisdom. He gave me this warning not to be a fun-sucking killjoy, but out of love and protection.
Our Heavenly Father does the same. He warns against the seduction of sin and the destruction of its deceit.
We all need a change of cognition from following folly to walking in wisdom.
In Proverbs 5, we will see how God’s wisdom protects Israel from dancing with infidelity.
God’s Wisdom Guards the Church from Dancing with Infidelity.
But how does God’s wisdom guards the church from dancing with infidelity?
There are four ways:

God Teaches Us His Ways (5:1-6)

Context

Literary
Many were written by King Solomon during the tenth century BC.
The goal of Proverbs is to teach practical wisdom and offer instruction to the youth (Pr. 1:1-4).
Historical-political
Israel was well-established in the land.
Peace on every side (but not from with inside!) under Solomon’s reign.
Theological
Fear of the Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom (Pr. 1:7).
Let’s dive in...

5:1 My son, be attentive to my wisdom;

incline your ear to my understanding,

2 that you may keep discretion,

and your lips may guard knowledge.

3 For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey,

and her speech is smoother than oil,

4 but in the end she is bitter as wormwood,

sharp as a two-edged sword.

5 Her feet go down to death;

her steps follow the path to Sheol;

6 she does not ponder the path of life;

her ways wander, and she does not know it.

Explain

Wisdom = Jesus
Proverbs 8:22–31 says that “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man.”
Know, and then do.
Forbidden Woman
Someone outside the nation of Israel or perhaps someone else’s wife.
She is outside the covenant of marriage and therefore off-limits.
She is seductive like Satan in the Garden of Eden.
Wormwood (bitter) and sword (death) describe the result of dancing with her.
Sheol
The realm of the dead in Hebrew thought.
Known as Hades or Hell in the NT.
Path of Life
Contrasted with death/Sheol.
Wisdom would protect one from death.
Sleeping with another man’s wife would cause some problems.
Jesus is the way, truth, and life (Jn. 14:6).
He describes two gates (narrow & wide, Mt. 7:13-14).
Following this woman/desire through the wide gate is destruction.
The woman does not know wisdom (Jesus).
The second way that God’s wisdom guards his church is...

God Warns Us of Destruction (5:7-14)

7 And now, O sons, listen to me,

and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

8 Keep your way far from her,

and do not go near the door of her house,

9 lest you give your honor to others

and your years to the merciless,

10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength,

and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,

11 and at the end of your life you groan,

when your flesh and body are consumed,

12 and you say, “How I hated discipline,

and my heart despised reproof!

13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers

or incline my ear to my instructors.

14 I am at the brink of utter ruin

in the assembled congregation.”

Explain

Do not go near...
Wisdom says to avoid anything that brings you closer to folly.
Jesus taught that if you even think of a woman lustfully, you have committed adultery with her in your heart (Mt. 5:27-30).
He then implores one to remove their eye or hand to avoid the sin.
The point is to avoid the sin, not entertain it by dancing with it.
A woman grabbed my arm in Thailand and tried to convince Calib & I to follow. We literally ran from her.
Honor, Years, Strength, and Labor
These four are measurements of the “good life.”
Today that means:
Good reputation (well-liked or followed online).
Long life (good health).
Physical ability (athletics).
Successful career (job).
Forsaking wisdom forfeit these worthy benefits.
End of Life
When you’re on your deathbed, reflecting on your life, what will you say?
Assembled Congregation
LXX: church body and synagogue
Typically refers to a worshipping community or a muster for war.
LXX: ekklesias kai synagoges.
Warriors were to refrain from sexual relations (cf. Uriah from David’s time).
Foreign women often led Israel to apostacy.
Unfaithfulness towards their wives and Yahweh.
The third way God’s wisdom guards the Church is by...

God Blesses Us with a Spouse (5:15-19)

15 Drink water from your own cistern,

flowing water from your own well.

16 Should your springs be scattered abroad,

streams of water in the streets?

17 Let them be for yourself alone,

and not for strangers with you.

18 Let your fountain be blessed,

and rejoice in the wife of your youth,

19 a lovely deer, a graceful doe.

Explain

Drink…from your own
Enjoy the blessings that God has given and do not covet another.
We have been given more than we deserve, yet we crave more than we have.
As rebels of the Living God, we do not deserve anything but death (Rm. 6:23).
Solomon would have known second-hand the damage this causes.
His mother was Bathsheba and David sinfully sought her.
Water in the streets
Would you want your wife giving herself to other men?
Intoxicated…in her love
To be captivated by or obsessed with.
Enjoying sexual intimacy here is how God designed it (marriage covenant).
The last way God’s wisdom guards the Church is by...

God Disciplines Us (5:20-23)

20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman

and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?

21 For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD,

and he ponders all his paths.

22 The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him,

and he is held fast in the cords of his sin.

23 He dies for lack of discipline,

and because of his great folly he is led astray.

Explain

Pattern of Sin
Desire, sin, death (Jas. 1:14-15).
Forbidden Woman
God prohibited Israel from marrying women from other nations ().
He knew that if they did, Israel would be led astray to worship idols.
Ironically, beginning with Solomon, this truth would split the kingdom of Israel in two, lead to generations of disobedient kings, and end with a Babylonian Exile.
Lust for women led men away from worshipping Yahweh.
Eyes of the Lord
Unlike the forbidden woman (who does not ponder the path of life), God does.
He knows our hearts and deeds (Hos. 7:2).
Our hearts are naked and exposed before God (Heb. 4:13).
Sin is a trap (Ps. 7).
Discipline
Hebrews 12:5–11 is a powerful teacher: “And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
A life of folly leads to death, but wisdom brings one to life (Job 4:21).
That is because Jesus is Wisdom.
“God made foolish the wisdom of the world (1 Cor. 1:20).
“For the foolishness of God is wiser than men (1 Cor. 1:25).
By leaving heaven behind,
Dying on a cross for sinners like us,
Rising from the dead and appearing before many,
And extending the gift of forgiveness and eternal life to those who simply repent and believe.
Through Jesus, Wisdom incarnate, we can cheat death and enjoy eternal life!

Conclusion

Reiteration

If you get too close to the cat, you are going to get scratched. But...
God’s Wisdom Guards the Church from Dancing with Infidelity.
How? He does so by...
Teaching us his ways (5:1-6).
Warning us of destruction (5:7-14).
Blessing us with a spouse (5:15-19).
Disciplining us (5:20-23).

Preach for Faith

Because of our sinful nature, we darken the doorstep of destruction!
We carry around a self-serving attitude instead of a heart full of gratitude.
