Confessing Jesus as Lord
Confessing Jesus as Lord
open bible to luke 12 vs 8-12
joke---bathroom scale
bold and honest man
Are you bold and honest when it comes to proclaiming your allegiance to Christ?
Why is it so important to confess that Jesus is Lord?
Cant we just believe it and keep it to ourselves.
well no…no we cant
It reminds me of when people get offended that
you are sharing Jesus publicly
they tell you to keep that to yourself
and then proudly exclaim in a defensive way,,,
Im a christian too
Well Jesus says that christians are meant to praise His name publicly
and we will get that insentive with His preaching from todays scripture
Jesus is speaking to His disciples in Luke ch 12
we pick up in
“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God.
Here we have a simple and yet powerful
statement.
Whoever will confess me
This is talking about someone who will admit openly that Jesus is their messiah
To confess Jesus means that you unapologetically are proclaiming
Jesus Christ and
everything His preaching stood for
This was especially dificult for many of His followers early on
who would be ostresized from their families
and face heavy persecution
even today you may face a certain level of persecution
to confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior
but
When you confess to other people
that you are following Jesus
God is pleased
He promises that He will confess you
as His righteousness
before the angels in heaven
This is like saying if you have Jesus back on earth
He will have your back in heaven
But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
your other option is to deny Jesus before the people on earth.
if this is you,
you can expect to be denied by Jesus in heaven.
Q. Now why would you deny
to confess Jesus before other people?
it stems from fear and embarrasment
Dont be embarrassed to confess Jesus
Dont be embarrassed to confess Jesus
at the end of the day
your relationship with Jesus
is the most important thing in your life
Were not talking about your mom
embarrising you when you were a teenager
or your dad
embarrising you at the resteraunt
Were talking about The one who went to the cross and died in your place
the one who has taken your sin from off your back
He is the one you owe your life to
and the only reason you will not pay the penalty for your sin
You know in your heart how much you love Him
so why is it so hard to stand up for Him publicly before others?
It is because we care too much about what people think.
we can become afraid of the judgment of man
you might say
I cant talk about Jesus
they will stop being my friend
or the conversation will be super akward
you know what will be a more akward conversation
for that person?
the conversation he has at the judgment seat of Christ.
its not good enough to say you believe in your heart
that faith must lead to a proclemation of Jesus Christ to others
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
the heart brings forth the faith that leads to salvation
but if it is not followed up with the public confession
then you need to check your heart..
It doesnt matter what anyone else thinks about God.
the question you need to ask yourself is
Q. What do you think about God.
you cant put your faith under a rock
it doesnt work that way…
think of it like dancing
if your always afraid of what people will think of you
your never going to dance
if your always afraid of what people will think about your faith
you will never confess His name
Jesus continues
“And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.
Here Jesus says that if you speak out against Him
you can be forgiven for it
but if you blaspheme against the holy spirit
it will not be forgiven
welcome to one of the most misunderstood verses in the bible
to blaspheme means to slander or revile
this means that a person speaks disparagingly or wickedly against someone
Here that someone is the holy spirit...
Jesus is making the point that words spoken hastily against Him
can be forgiven
we see peter denied Christ 3 times and was restored
you may loose your loved one and proclaim anger or depariging things against God
although it is not wise it can be forgiven
the “unforgivable sin”
against the holy spirit is not one specific sin
its not like
well you screwed up
you did it
there is no hope for you
blaspheming against the holy spirit means
that you deny the holy spirits work and testimony of Jesus Christ as Lord
those who blaspheme the holy spirit
are denying His message
of forgivness through the gospel
there is no forgivness for those who deny and blaspheme His work
Therefore we honor the Holy Spirit when we confess Jesus as Lord
“Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
Jesus is anticipating
that if His disciples are to confess Jesus and His gospel
that they would face persecution
and end up in front of the religious court system
He is not saying if
He is saying when
And I am telling you that if it hasnt happened yet,
somebody will try to put you on trial for your faith...
it may not be a literal trial
but as christians we are often
attacked for our beliefs
We get asked multiple backended questions that
will try to paint us as evil people
Jesus says that when your put on trial
dont worry about how or what you should answer..
Why Not?
Because the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what to say.
This is an amazing truth that should help us to confess Jesus no matter what.
What is the leading cause for people\
not sharing the good news of Jesus?
It is because we are uncertain of what we will say
Trust God for the words you need to confess Jesus
Trust God for the words you need to confess Jesus
I remember when my uncle put me on trial
He was so appauld I was a christian
and He did whatever he could to make me seem like a mean lunatic
He attacked me as a gay Basher, a fairy tale lover, a science neglector
He asked me questions that I simply didnt have the answers to
But you know what
I had peace
I continued to show love and grace
and I defended my faith as best I could and told Him I would get the answers to his questions.
Do you know that I went back to Him with my answers to his questions
and when He realized I knew what I was talking about
He moved on to the next rediculous claim
I know that the Holy spirit was with me during this interaction
He was giving me what was needed to confess my savior
I did not need to be afraid
and neither do you.
you may be able to
talk all day about cars or sports
but freeze up when talking about God
dont run away from
being engaged about Jesus
but press into it
If you are worried that you do not know enough
then dedicate yourself to learning
and then trust that The holy spirit is working in you.
for part of His work is to confess Jesus to the world through you
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
The Holy spirit is at work
And He is glorifying Jesus
by guiding us in all truth
therefore we ought not be embarrassed to confess Jesus as Lord
and we must trust Him for the words we need to do just that
Will you go out today and confess with your mouth
who your Lord and savior is
and what He has done for you
MAybe you do not know Him as Lord
today can be your day to confess Him for the very first time
