Bible Discipleship - TC3

Text - is it actually written in the scripture, if so then actually read it
Context - consider the verses around it, the book, the testament to determine meaning
Consistency - is it a consistent theme, lesson, principle taught in other parts of the Bible
Character - does it fit the character of God
(4th)Common sense - use your brain
problem is that these things take effort, especially as you go down the list (we rather someone just tell us) . . . but some things are too important to not investigate yourself
also common sense is not as much fun as drama . . . guess who created common sense? God!
I saw Social media posts, so let’s use TC3
If you don’t read the actual verse
“I’m scared, I don’t want to read it”
you will conclude and maybe even spread the news that something weird or supernatural going on
can’t enjoy your weekend or day
if you barely read it - you will conclude and probably spread the news that Jesus is coming back any minute now.
what will happen if you do TC3?
Text
Joel 2:31 NLT
The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives.
Text - sun turned dark,
What is supposed to happen to the moon?
but moon did not turn blood red (or turn into blood)
Context
we’ll add the verse right before it
Joel 2:30–31 NLT
And I will cause wonders in the heavens and on the earth— blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives.
The full story is that we should look for wonders in the heavens AND on earth . . . .blood, fire, and columns of smoke?
we did not see all of these elements (just the sun go dark)
Consistency
Peter quotes this scripture on the day of Pentecost (and he uses more context that what we did)
Acts 2:14–21 NLT
Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy. And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Peter is saying, “We have entered into the last age, and one of the signs of the last age is that God will pour out his spirit on people
Seems to be saying that the last age began on that day . . . and will conclude with signs in the sky and on earth (blood, fire, smoke, dark sun, moon turned blood red) . . . fits Revelation (consistency)
but agin, yesterday we did not see all of those signs
Are we in the last days, yeah . . . they began on the day of Pentecost
and humanity has been living in the last days (age) for over 2,000 years so far
yes, time is running out, but does that mean 300 more days or 300 more years? . . . we don’t know yet
Character
Does it fit within the character of God to make a major announcement with a planned and understood phenomena? (we knew to the minute)
No one was surprised or perplexed
no, people are always, surprised, amazed, can’t be explained, should have seen it coming but I am still shocked!
Common Sense - so what did all of the other total eclipses mean?
little over 100 in the last 200 years (from somewhere on the earth)
August 12, 2026 - Greenland
August 2, 2027 - Egypt
next one here is August 12, 2045
Scripture in Joel sounded like a one time event

Review Chapter 1

Ask Questions:
Children of Israel
12 Tribes
Why did Egyptians turn against them
What did they do to try to subdue them
slavery
harsher slavery
kill them with midwives
catch and kill them in the Nile
Lessons
with God, you can grow in adversity
fearing God more than people
talked about lying (spirit behind the law)
Did you get mini correction about “Thou shall not lie”?
We established that the Bible speaks against lying, it’s a sin
It is still true that the 10 Commandments say, “thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor” and does not say “thou shall not lie”
don’t lie on somebody, especially in a civil situation
Hover, a scripture verse in Leviticus comes real close to saying”Thou shall not lie”, depending on version
Leviticus 19:11 KJV 1900
Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.
Leviticus 19:11 NLT
“Do not steal. “Do not deceive or cheat one another.
NLT takes it to mean don’t deceive one another
Leviticus 19 is not the ten commandments, but it does contains a long list of moral do don’ts

Exodus 2

Exodus 2:1–2 NLT
About this time, a man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months.
House of Levi, what does that mean?
Tribe of Levi
came from Jacob’s son Levi
people from this tribe we call Levites
Moses is a Levite
special baby - Beautiful, goodly, fine
Hid him from authorities as long as she could
Exodus 2:3–9 NASB95
But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him. The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.
good example of favor
She felt sorry for the baby and didn’t have him killed . . . felt so sorry for him that she decided to keep him
sign that God is up to something
of all people, Pharaoh’s daughter
Moses’ mother gets paidto breast feed and babysit her own son
Exodus 2:10 NLT
Later, when the boy was older, his mother brought him back to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her own son. The princess named him Moses, for she explained, “I lifted him out of the water.”
Moses means “drawn out of water”
the next verse, verse 11 makes a 40 year jump!
what happened in between?
We have two other scriptures that fill in some of the details
speech of Stephen
Acts 7:20–22 NLT
“At that time Moses was born—a beautiful child in God’s eyes. His parents cared for him at home for three months. When they had to abandon him, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and raised him as her own son. Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and action.
Moses was learning and being trained . . . got his “doctorate degree”, he was impressive, he was not raised as a slave
Hebrews 11:24 NLT
It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.
Moses chose to identify with the children of Israel rather than as part of the royal family
Hebrews 11:25 NLT
He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.
Moses did not just live the good life and ignore their suffering . . . .maybe he became an advocate for them, help them, work with them?
back to Exodus
Exodus 2:11–12 NLT
Many years later, when Moses had grown up, he went out to visit his own people, the Hebrews, and he saw how hard they were forced to work. During his visit, he saw an Egyptian beating one of his fellow Hebrews. After looking in all directions to make sure no one was watching, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid the body in the sand.
Moses kills an Egyptian in defense of his fellow Israelite
Trying to help out, hid the body, feels good about getting away with it . . . maybe he thought we would be a vigilante (sometimes our understanding of God’s plans are off, or the timing)
Exodus 2:13–14 NLT
The next day, when Moses went out to visit his people again, he saw two Hebrew men fighting. “Why are you beating up your friend?” Moses said to the one who had started the fight. The man replied, “Who appointed you to be our prince and judge? Are you going to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?” Then Moses was afraid, thinking, “Everyone knows what I did.”
Mr. Bigshot thinks he runs us, Mr. raised in the palace . . . who told you that you were in charge?
You going to kill me like you did that Egyptian?
Moses was smart enough to figure out that the secret was out
get some more insight from . . . .
Acts 7:24–25 NASB95
“And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended him and took vengeance for the oppressed by striking down the Egyptian. “And he supposed that his brethren understood that God was granting them deliverance through him, but they did not understand.
All the . . . .
being saved from the river
mother allowed to nurse him
adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter
educated by the best
made it plain to Moses, this is my calling, but others could not see it
Exodus 2:15–17 NLT
And sure enough, Pharaoh heard what had happened, and he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in the land of Midian. When Moses arrived in Midian, he sat down beside a well. Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came as usual to draw water and fill the water troughs for their father’s flocks. But some other shepherds came and chased them away. So Moses jumped up and rescued the girls from the shepherds. Then he drew water for their flocks.
Moses ran away an ended up in a land of Midian
helped 7 sisters get water for their flocks
fought off other guys (Moses had hands) and helped them get the water
Exodus 2:18–21 NLT
When the girls returned to Reuel, their father, he asked, “Why are you back so soon today?” “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they answered. “And then he drew water for us and watered our flocks.” “Then where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave him there? Invite him to come and eat with us.” Moses accepted the invitation, and he settled there with him. In time, Reuel gave Moses his daughter Zipporah to be his wife.
Father of the daughters knew it usually took them a long time (other shepherds)
they explained, then he invited Moses to dinner . . . Moses married one of his daughters (He needed male help, and Moses needed a place to stay)
What do we know about Midian, Moses father-in-law, and Moses’ wife
Midian was a descendant of Abraham through Abraham’s 2nd wife Keturah (after Sarah died) . . . and they had 6 boys (Midian was #4)
Bible says before he died he gave gifts to them and sent them away . . . Isaac was the heir
These are distant relatives of the Israelites
so the father of these seven daughters was most likely a priest who worshipped the true God . . . Moses has run into a godly family
his name Reuel means “Friend of God”
He is also called Jethro (chapter 3)
Moses wife is black
Numbers 12:1 NLT
While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because he had married a Cushite woman.
So Jethro or his wife, or both were black, Keturah might have been black (not sure)
they got in trouble for it . . .
Exodus 2:22 NLT
Later she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, for he explained, “I have been a foreigner in a foreign land.”
his name means ”I am a strangers in this place”
So Moses is safe, but not at peace with his situation.
Exodus 2:23 NLT
Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God.
years passed
King who wanted Moses dead is gone
Israelites continue to suffer
Israelites are crying out to God
Exodus 2:24–25 NLT
God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act.
Lesson for tonight, Have faith because
1. God does hear your cries
2. God does remember his promises
3. God will move at the right time
