What’s the point of being a follower of Jesus?
Eternal Life
Good life
Moral Life
Loved by God
Knowing God.
Why did Jesus come down?
Save us
Point to God
Show how we’re supposed to live
Glorify God.
John 17:1-5.

The Glory of God.

Glory of the Father
One of teh first things that Jesus says in this prayer is that He was sent to glorify God the Father
He lives His entire life in complete submission to the Father, which glorifies Him.
He was obedient to God, and He had one more act of radical obedience to accomplish: The cross
Vs. 4, Jesus glorifies theFather even on the cross, by finishing the work that He was sent to do
That means that God was glorified when Christ died!
The Father, in pouring out His wrath on His Son, shows His love and kindness and goodness and justice and mercy.
He’s glorified in this terrible tragedy.
Glory of the Son
Jesus doesn’t just glorify the Father, He is glorified.
v. 2: This seems to say that the Son must be glorified to fully glorify the Father
What does that mean?
The Son is glorified even in His death
On the cross, Jesus was glorified!
Even in His darkest, worst moments, even as He is brutally beaten and murdered, He is glorified.
That’s why we talk and ing about the cross! We don’t worship a torture instrument, we’re worshipping the Son of God who gave Himself on a cross!
When we reflect on Jesus’ death, we see His glory as the sacrifice for our sin.
That glory is shown in v. 5 too
Not only is Jesus glorified in His death, but He’s brought into even greater glory.
Jesus shares the glory of the father
If we were Jews when Jesus said this, we would flip!
God is everything! His glory is infinite! And Jesus has that same glory from “before the world existed!?”
Jesus is God!
That can only be a statement from God!

The Eternal Life

Jesus says in v. 2 that one of the reasons He went to the cross is for you!
“So that He may give”
He came, “so that” we might receive eternal life
God gave us Christians to Jesus, and He does everything
it’s all up to Him!
You aren’t the one who gets eternal life, it’s “given”!
Eternal life is knowing God
Then, Jesus tells us what eternal life is.
It’s not heaven as we think of it. It’s not eternal golf or video games or whatever you think heaven might be like.
THAT’S DIFFERENT THAN OUR EXPECTATION
This word for know isn’t like how I know math, it’s experiential, it’s like how I know a friend. I’ve spent time with Him and He’s spent time with me.
That means that the eternal life begins here!
You don’t ahve to wait until you die, you can experience knowing God here.
Oh, when we get to heaven, it will be so much sweeter, but it’s offered to you now!
I look at Him story
John Maria Vianney, peasant would spend hours in the empty church gazing at the altar.
“I look at Him, and He looks at me, and we are happy.
We can only get this eternal life through Jesus: Jesus in His life, Jesus in His death, and His resurrection.
