John 14
John 14
From the end of John 13, to the end of chapter 14, Jesus had 4 disciples ask questions or make a statement. Each time, Jesus refers back to Himself.
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Jesus is the Way - Follow Me
Jesus is the Truth - Believe in Me
Jesus is the life - Abide in Me.
Augustine quote: “If I accept what i like in the gospel, and reject what I don’t like, it’s not Jesus that I believe, it’s that I’m trusting myself.”
Hebrews 8
Hebrews 8
Old covenant is explicit to define what Gods standard is but it does nothing to help me live it
Hebrews 8:1 - He is seated. He is the only one that can finish the work.
2 a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.
God begins the new covenant.
Reminds me of Abraham in Genesis 15.
3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.
Hebrews 8:4 (KJV 1900)
4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”
6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
Jesus is the better Leader. Better Priest (v. 1-6)
Jesus’ covenant
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
8 For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
9 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”
13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Jesus’ covenant actually does the work in us.
The Old was Insufficient. (God's Response to man's Rebellion, Exposed Sin, Seperated, Temporary)
The New is Sufficient. (God's Response to man's Hopelessness, Fulfilled the Promise, Provided Grace, Invited, Permanent)
Hebrews 9-10
Hebrews 9-10
verses 1-10
When Jesus walked into the Temple, He was responsible for all of that.
Salvation is available but not automatic.
Salvation is sufficient for all, but it’s not effective for us UNTIL they repent and believe in Jesus.
Hebrews 11.
Hebrews 11.
Faith is a response to the work of Christ
Faith requires us to take action
Faith steps out in obedience
Faith provides boldness
Faith brings dependence on God instead of self
chapter 4 in tozer:
“Faith enables our spiritual sense to function. Where faith is defective, the result will be inward insensibility and numbness toward spiritual things”
ws 12:1-2
“Faith is of utmost importance. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith will get me anything, take me anywhere in the kingdom of God; but without faith there can be no approach to God, no forgiveness, no deliverance, no salvation, no communion, no spiritual life at all”
“I think he would conclude that faith is the gaze of a soul upon a saving God.”
