You Have Heard

Genesis 4:23–24 “Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.””
See Leviticus 24:17–20...
Exodus 21:22-25 applies this same standard if someone injured a pregnant woman’s child.
Deuteronomy 19:16-21 said that whoever falsely accused someone of wrongdoing, was to be punished in the same way that they tried to get the innocent person punished.

Revenge and Retaliation

Individuals
Leviticus 19:18 “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.”
Proverbs 24:29 “Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done.””
Proverbs 20:22 “Do not say, “I will repay evil”; wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.”
See Romans 12:17-21...
The Lord
Deuteronomy 32:35 “Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.’”
Hebrews 10:30–31 “For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
Governing Authorities
See Romans 13:1-4...
1 Peter 2:13–14 “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.”

Letting Go of Vengeance

Colossians 3:12–13 “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”
See Matthew 18:21-35...
See Luke 7:40-47...
1 John 4:19–21 “We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
