PALSM SUNDAY, STAY IN BETHANY
MONDAY-CURSE THE FIG TREE TURNOVER TEMPLE
NOw IT’S TUESDAY......JUST STIRRED UP THE TEMPLE, BRAVE TO COME BACK, BUT WANTED TO TEACH THE PEOPLE
Mark 11:27–33 (ESV)
27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28 and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. 33 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
AUTHORITY ALWAYS IN QUESTION
THEY KNEW AND WANTED HIM TO SAY GOD’S AUTHORITY
THAT’S THE ANSWER.....OUR DAY SOUNDS MORE LIKE ---- “how can you say” JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY, WE ALL FALL SHORT, THEIR IS ONLY 1 WAY, NARROW IS THE GATE
WE SAY IT CAUSE GOD ALREADY SAID IT!!!
THEY KNEW WHAT AUTHORITY HE SAID HE WAS HERE BY.......THEY HAD HEARD HIM PREACH, THEY HAD DEBATED WITH HIM, THEY HAD HEARD OF THE MIRACLES, MAYBE EVEN SEEN THEM
BUT THEY WANT CONCRETE EVIDENCE, THEY NEED IT SO THEY CAN ARREST HIM AT LEAST
NOW when Jesus asked them to answer the question regarding John the Baptist, He was not evading their question. If John really was from God, then he was right about Jesus and Jesus was indeed the Messiah. If what John said was true, then Jesus had all authority.
If they said it was from man, then they fear the people
i. “It was not a dodge, but a home thrust that cleared the air and defined their attitude both to John and Jesus. They rejected John as they now reject Jesus.” (Robertson)
“We do not know”: Their response to His question exposed the fact that these men were not sincere seekers of truth. They cared more about scoring rhetorical points in debate and in pleasing the crowds than in knowing the truth.
SO JESUS SAYS ALRIGHT, COOL i GOTCHA...............NOW HES GONNA TALK TO THEM IN PARABLES.....NOT HIDDEN STRAIGHT FORWARD
OVERVIEW
DETAILS
APPLICATION
Mark 12:1–12 (ESV)
1 And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country. 2 When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
4 Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. 6 He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others.
10 Have you not read this Scripture: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 11 this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” 12 And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.
COMMON PART OF THE ECONOMY/AGRICULTURE
This sort of tenant farming relationship was a common practice in Jesus’ day, especially in the region of Galilee. Archaeologists have discovered records of this same sort of dispute between landowners and tenant farmers.
ALSO COMMON KNOWLEDGE to these religious leaders what Jesus is talking about: THIS IS A PICTURE OF ISREAL, IT’S A PICTURE OF THEM
Isaiah 5:1–5
1 Let me sing for my beloved, my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. 2 He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.
3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4 What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? 5 And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.
OVERVIEW:
OWNER IS GOD
vinedressers represented the rulers of Israel and the vineyard represented the people of God as a whole.
servants - prophets
son-Jesus
THEY DIDN’T BUY IT NOR BUILD IT, THE GENEROUS OWNER ALLOWED TO STEWARD IT, and get keep a great profit (25-50% in some cases go to owner and they keep the rest)
TURNED AGAINST THE OWNER. DID NOT HOLD UP THEIR END OF THE AGREEMENT
THE OWNER wasn’t there in person, and so they had no fear, no worry, they beat and eventually even killed the servants the owner sent.
Mark 12:3–5 ESV
3 And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed.
THESE were the prophets
WE HAVE IT EASY!!! THESE PROPHETS DID NOT!!!
steven.....newly appointed deacons, full of “God’s grace and power” ....religious rulers didn’t like him
Acts 7:51–53 ESV
51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”
PERSECUTION OF THE PROPHETS:
Zecharia- STONED TO DEATH
Obadiah says in 1 Kings 18 that Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord
Jeremiah 20:1–2 ESV
1 Now Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Then Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate of the house of the Lord.
JOHN the baptist BEHEADED
PERSECUTION HAS ALWAYS COME TO THE FAITHFUL AND JESUS WARNED US
John 15:18–21 ESV
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
GOD IS PATIENT.....ARE YOU? SOME OF YOU ARE TESTING THAT.
2 Peter 3:9 ESV
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Mark 12:6–11 (ESV)
6 He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.
9 What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this Scripture: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 11 this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
DAY OF RECKONING, JUDGEMENT WILL COME!!!
Jesus instructed them from the “Hosanna Psalm” (Psalm 118:22-28), because the Messiah was officially presented to Israel.
JESUS IS THE CORNERSTONE.....MESSIANIC CLAIM
The cornerstone was usually one of the largest, the most solid, and the most carefully constructed of any STONES. The Bible describes Jesus as the cornerstone that His church would be built upon. He is foundational.
Once the cornerstone was set, it became the basis for determining every measurement in the remaining construction; everything was aligned to it. As the cornerstone of the building of the church, Jesus is our standard of measure and alignment.
Isaiah 28:16–17 (ESV)
16 therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’ 17 And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line..”
Ephesians 2:19–21 (ESV)
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
IS JESUS YOUR CORNERSTONE?
Mark 12:12 (ESV)
12 And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.
THEY KNEW THE BIBLE BUT THEY DIDN’T KNOW GOD!!
DON’T CARE HOW MANY VERSE YOU KNOW IF YOU’RE NOT LIVING THEM OUT!!
