Whats In Your Cup
Whats In Your Cup
welcome
ask if they can finish the jingle
read passage
While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.
“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”
One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.
a lot to go through lets recap where we are at in Luke
Luke opens up with Jesus away praying and then the disciples ask him how to pray = Lords Prayer…
A crowed arrives and Jesus begins teaching and healing and casting out demons = people accuse him of working in the name of Beelzebul
Jesus corrects them and teaches them that we should not hide the light that is within us but rather light the way for everyone else = our inside health…
and now we are here = as Jesus is finishing he is invited to a pharisees house for dinner.
lets go on
The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.
lets read here and stop for a minute = the whole passage is about this scripture here
bring up relatable story of being invited to dinner…
this would be understandable…if this is what it was about…
change up story…
This washing was done not for health reasons but as a symbol of washing away any contamination from touching anything unclean.
Not only did the Pharisees make a public show of their washing, but they also commanded everyone else to follow a practice originally intended only for the priests.
This Pharisee was surprised that Jesus, a rabbi, would not follow the practice of ceremonial washing.
Speak on this passage
pharisees cared more about what they looked like, the way they were viewed, making sure people knew what they were doing
they were so concerned about cleanliness yet Jesus calls them out for deceiving others into uncleanliness by walking on graves…
So now we see another group of individuals arise…Lawyers
talk about lawyers, Pharisees, and scribes…
These “burdens” were the details the Pharisees had added to God’s law.
To the commandment, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy” (Exodus 20:8 NIV),
for example, they had added instructions regarding how far a person could walk on the Sabbath, which kinds of knots could be tied, and how much weight could be carried.
Healing a person was considered unlawful work on the Sabbath, although rescuing a trapped animal was permitted.
Instead of teaching God’s law so that people could love, understand, and obey the God who gave it,
they turned the law into a confused maze of do’s and don’ts that had become a burden to the people.
The legal experts refused to lift one finger to help the people.
As experts, they probably found all kinds of ways to get themselves out from under the burden.
No wonder Jesus condemned them.
Conclude but dont stand
As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.
This is the application for us today
whats in your cup
bring up different cups
as children of God its not about whats on the outside, what are we doing for the church, how much money do we give, etc because we can look the part but be filled with horrible rotten fruit…
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
thats a big woe…it does matter whats inside your cup…
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Speak on this passage
notice it says fruit of the spirit not fruits…Its not good enough to have one or two…
These nine attributes come together in a Christian’s life to reflect a complete picture of the character of Christ.
now how do we grow in the fruit of the spirit??
well it is the fruit of the SPIRIT
The moment a person accepts Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit takes up permanent residence in that person’s life. And it is the Spirit’s power that transforms and molds the person into Christ’s likeness.
What does that mean? How, exactly, does the Holy Spirit do this miraculous work in a person’s life?
It doesn’t just “happen.” The believer in Christ has an important role to play in this transformation.
In Galatians 5:25 , Paul reveals the secret to making sure the Holy Spirit can cultivate the fruit of Christ’s character in one’s life.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
It is this: “Keep in step with the Spirit.”
Keeping in step means trusting and following the Spirit’s lead.
To discover the Spirit’s leading, the Christian must be in close relationship to God.
How? By spending time in God’s presence and being immersed in prayer and his Word.
If you memorize every verse of every Bible version in your church library, but do not live by faith …
If you trace all the cross-references in every center column of Bible text, but do not share with the poor …
If you know the citations of every name of God in the Old and New Testament, but never tell a neighbor about Jesus …
What are you? A religious expert. But what good is that?

HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER
