Temptation

Good morning.
Today I am going to try something different.
Pray
This morning we are going to be looking at the baptism and temptation of Jesus. We are going to be in the book of Mark 1:9-13. We are going to look at the start of Jesus’ public ministry. We are just going to get straight into it.
Mark 1:9–13 (NASB 2020)
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon Him; 11 and a voice came from the heavens: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
12 And immediately the Spirit brought Him out into the wilderness. 13 And He was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving Him.
What days are we talking about.
Nazareth - Not mentioned anywhere in the OT Bible or any major Jewish historical writings. It was so unknown that Mark felt the need to say that it was in Galilee.
John saw Jesus and objected to baptising Him.
John skit.
Matthew 3:15 (NASB 2020)
15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
Why did Jesus need to be baptized?
He is the sinless Lamb of God!
To identify with us
He placed Himself among the guilty
He got baptised not for His salvation, but for ours.
He got baptised not for His guilt, but for ours.
He got baptised not because He feared the wrath to come, but to save us from it.
He got baptised in obedience to His Father.
His baptism meant the cross.
His baptism was the Holy Spirit anointing the human nature of Jesus.
He was baptised with water and with Spirit.
V10
immediately the heavens were opened!
the Holy Spirit descended like a dove.
It doesn’t say the the Holy Spirit is a dove, like a dove.
the dove is one of the gentlest landing birds.
The Spirit came down gently on Jesus.
V11
remember that it has been over 400 years since God has spoken to the Jews.
That was through prophets, here He speaks audibly. Everyone there heard what God said.
John, the people there to get baptised and Jesus, they all heard it.
God said that this is My son.
I am well pleased in You!
Every son wants to hear their father say this about them!
For a father to be well pleased in his son, the son has to do the work that will earn those words.
They must be obedient and do what the father wishes.
The fathers love is unconditional, but for the father to say that he is well please, that must be earned.
Just like Jesus was obedient in every way to God the Father, we must also be obedient.
Temptation
Story in Commentary
V12
Immediately the Spirit took Jesus to the wilderness.
In the mind of the Jew, they thought that the wilderness was a place of danger, gloom, and the abode of demons.
The wilderness was a place of danger and loneliness. It was the realm of Satan!
The Spirit took Jesus here to be tempted by the devil.
Paul calls Jesus the second Adam
Just like the first Adam, whose sin effected all, so the second Adam’s righteousness will effect all also.
Adam and Eve’s temptation.
In the Garden, all the food they could want to eat.
Living life with each other without sin
Taking walks with God.
They had everything they needed or could want
They still sinned
Jesus was in the desert
Had no food and was hungry
He was by Himself
He had all kinds of needs!
He did not sin!!!
We are most vulnerable to temptation when we are alone or we are fellow-shipping with the wrong people.
He was there for 40 days!!!
He was being tempted the whole time He was there.
In Matthew it tells us that Jesus didn’t eat for the 40 days!
Apart from the power of the Holy Spirit, a fast of this length is impossible.
It is safe to say that there is probably no one here that has fasted that long.
I can’t imagine what it would be like to go that long without eating.
I miss one meal and think I am going to die!
At the end of the 40 days, Satan unleashes His strongest attacks.
Jesus did not Sin!
Jesus passed the test!
The battle against Satan was won, but not the war, YET!
We have that same power to overcome the Tempter!
We have that same Holy Spirit!
It is us that is the deciding factor to whether or not we are going to fall for the temptation.
We talked about temptation last Wednesday
It is our lust that leads us to temptation according to James.
If we will keep our eyes fixed on our King
Stay in the Word of God
and stay in fellowship with other believers, we have the greatest chances of not falling into temptation!
What a great truth to know that our King identifies with us in every way and did not fall for temptation.
We don’t have to be perfect, because He was
We just have to surrender and repent of our sins.
If we do that, we have salvation through His works.
We have His righteousness.
We become heirs with Him
We become sons and daughters of God.
Let’s pray.
