Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
“We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
Background.
The beginning of this chapter, tells of how Jesus fed 5,000 men plus women and children, with just 2 fish and 5 loaves . . . so he has become very popular
He has the 12 disciples, he has some other disciples, and after this he gained a whole lot of disciples
But Jesus understands that the people don’t want his message . . . they want what Jesus can do for them
They want the physical food and not the spiritual food
They want the temporary but not the eternal
They don’t want to know God, they want to get God’s stuff
and they are so excited about what Jesus did for them and could potentially do for them, they tried to declare him as their king.
but it was not time for Jesus to be declared king, So Jesus fled: he crossed sea and went to
Capernaum . . . and when the crowd realized that he and his 12 disciples were gone, they put two and two together and figured out where he was
So they got some boats, crossed the sea, and tracked him down
When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
“Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”
And they get into an argument with Jesus because he tells them the truth . . . And as Jesus talks with them (v 28-65), the people get angrier and angrier . . .
they get angry because they don’t like what he has to say, and they angry because that Jesus won’t do any more miracle for them . . . in other words Jesus will not perform from them
same thing to day - people don’t like what the Bible has to say, and they have gotten angry at Christianity, Christians, Christians leaders
and People always demanding that Jesus perform for them . . . “if Jesus is real then he needs to“ . . . “If Jesus hears prayers then he should” . . . . perform for me
But since they don’t like his words and Jesus will not perform for them . . .
As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.
in other words, they turned away and deserted him
I believe it is safe to interpret this as, “many who seemed like they were his disciples withdrew and were not walking with him anymore”
looked like, said they were,
And so many people left that Jesus asked this question to the main 12:
So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?”
You all going to leave me too?
Has it gotten too hot for you
have my words offended you?
Are you discouraged by the things you think I need to be doing?
I don’t care how deep you are in God
I don’t care how strong you are in God
I don’t care how long you’ve walked with God
There will come a time(s) where you will consider withdrawing and walking away, quitting this Christian walk, giving up on trying to please God
Because he hasn’t done what you want Him to do and because His words are controversial in the eyes of the world, if you are not spiritual then his words are hard to accept
There’s only one way
he is the way, the truth, and the light
in all my ways acknowledge him?
love my enemies?
do good to those that despitefully use me?
give?
forgive and keep forgiving?
adultery is sinful?
fornication is wrong?
homosexual acts are wrong
abortion is murder?
there are only two genders and God assigns it
children should be loved, but they also should be disciplined, trained, and guided and told what to do?
when I go through trials, consider it joy?
I’ve got to fellowship with, get along with, and serve with all of these imperfect people in the church?
love my wife like Christ loved us and sacrificed himself for us
submit to my husband as unto the Lord?
take up my own cross and follow him?
when bad things happen, I am supposed to believe that it will work out for my good?
though God slay me, yet will I trust in him?
and when people really consider God’s words, some who call themselves disciples will begin to withdraw and stop walking with Jesus.
The probable answer to the question, “What happened to Bro. so and so” . . . Jesus didn’t do what they wanted and/or they were offended by his words
Today, I want us to find encouragement in Peter’s response
Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
in other words peter is saying, “Leave? We ain’t got no where to go!”
if you leave this Christian walk, who are you going to go to?
Who are you going to turn to
Who ARE you are going to trust in?
Yourself:
Are you going to trust yourself and your limited knowledge, limited wisdom, limited experience, limited intelligence
Are you going to trust in yourself despite all the promises you’ve already broken to yours yourself?
Are you going to rely on yourself to keep you, protect you, and deliver you . . . when you can’t even guarantee that you will be alive by evening?

People
people cannot be trusted
you can’t trust black people, white people, indian people, asian people, hispanic people
you can’t trust women, men
the best of us will let you down!
no matter who, where, or when . . . people will do you wrong (lie, cheat, mislead you, take advantage of you, misinform you, forget about you)
even those who start with the best intentions will hurt you, fall short, let you down
you ain’t got no where to go
Another religion
which of these founders of religion got others to listen to them? all of them
Which of these founders backed up their teachings with demonstrations of power? Only one . . . Jesus Christ
his followers testified of his miracles
historical accounts of non believers had to admit something was going on . . they called it acts of sorcery
power was being displayed, he wasn’t just talking
Which of these founders defeated death? Only one . . . Jesus Christ
He’s the only only one whose followers witnessed his resurrection and were willing to die because not of what they heard happened, but what they saw happened
He’s the only one who can pull call on 500 witnesses, who can testify that he rose from the dead
the others religious founders died, and their followers testified that they stayed dead
are you going to listen to a dead person about eternal life
you ain’t got no where to go
Idols
people are still putting up statues
people are still worship nature
but why would you serve god who cannot see, hear, think, care, who have no hands to save?
you ain’t got no where to go
GEt into the occult, other Spirits
people try to get in contact with other spirits
demons in disguise
demons bent on destroying you
demons that make you feel like you have power, make you feel like you are in control, but they are controlling you
that hate you and are preparing YOU to be the sacrifice
you ain’t got no where to go
and Peter understand this . . .even if we wanted to go, we have no where else to go to
When I was about 8/9, I ran away about 15 minutes.
their ways, rules, words, rubbed me the wrong way . . . couldn’t take it any more!
parents wrote me a letter of introduction
I got on my bike
went to the corner store
money 75% gone
I had no where to go
no one else was looking to take care of me
so I went back home cause I realized I ain’t got no where to go
thinking about giving up on God . . . this Christian life has not turned out like you thought . . . . you need to come to the understanding that you ain’t got no where to go
Words of God rub you the wrong way, seem old fashioned, or out of touch . . . . you ain’t got no where to go!
Peter broke it down . . .
You have the words of eternal life.
The words that seem to controversial, tough, harsh . . are actually the words that lead to eternal life
the words that rub me the wrong way are actually the words that I need to hear
the words that seem out of touch are the words of truth!
We have believed, and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God
in other words, We really believe in You Jesus
When we said we would follow you, we meant it
serve you, we meant it
be your disciples
we are not following you because of what we can get from you, we follow you because you are the one to be followed
we praise you because you are the one who deserves praise
we serve you because you are the Lord of Lords
we bow because you are the king of kings
all of the other alternatives, are not alternatives at all . . . you are the Holy One of God
we ain’t got no where to god!
nobody but you Lord, nobody but you
and we’re going all the way
we’ve already crossed the line
we’ve already made our choice
When you see me
I might be happy, I might be sad
joyful, mad
peace, perplexed
letting my light shine, struggling to live right
but you will never see me walking away from God, cause I ain’t got now where to go . . . Cause he has the words of eternal life . . I have believed on him, and have come to know that he is the Holy one of God
if you see me being faithful, understand that it’s just that I have realized . . . I ain’t got no where to go
