Once we’ve been doing our “To know Him” series. And just typical James Bryson fashion we are going to do a series inside of a series. And this is the “I Am” series.
I am:
* the Bread of Life (John 6:35).
* the Light of the World (John 9:5).
* the Good Shepherd (John 10:11).
* the Door (John 10:9).
* the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25).
* the true vine (John 15:1).
* the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).
If our physical body needs to eat numerous times a day for the body to function as it was designed, then how much more does the spiritual man need to eat regularly because the soul is starving to death? And how do you know the soul is starving to death? Because you are living a dissatisfied life.
All of humanity has a spiritual appetite. we just choose to fill our appetite with substance that won’t sustain us. Its like eating haagen- Dazs ice cream for breakfast lunch and dinner. Though its good its not conducive to growth and the proper nutrients you need in order to lead a healthy life.
But the hunger and thirst you need should be after righteousness.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Just is speaking of an intense longing for righteousness, that will be likened under to hunger and thirst.
The righteousness Matt is talking about is a given righteousness not an achieved righteousness.
We do not achieve it but we hunger and thirst for this righteousness.
“ For they shall be filled” meaning God will fill them!
When God fills us He doesn’t give us a trace of righteousness but the fullness of righteousness.
On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone—
however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks—
when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
This was right after the miracle of Jesus walking on water. He walked on the sea of Galilee from Tiberias and got to his disciples boat and ended up on the other side of the sea which is Capernaum. There was a large crowd looking for Jesus but couldn’t find him, they seen Jesus compelled his disciples to get on the boat but Jesus didn’t get on. And He didn’t disclose to them that He walked on water.
This crowd was looking for Jesus because He had the ability to feed them. Jesus fed 5000 people and they were full. But they finally found Jesus on the other side of the sea in Capernaum and they asked Him “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
Jesus responded very strongly. “Most Assuredly” or “I tell you that truth!”
Jesus is drawing attention to His next words!
They sought Jesus because of what He could do, they had a materialistic motivation.
You mean I never have to work again I just hang out with Jesus and He gives me my bread?
I never have to be sick again I hang out with Jesus and He heals me?
Mere miracles can be corrosive of genuine faith.
“Mere miracles can be corrosive of genuine faith.”
Because now I have given God a ultimatum. If you don’t perform a miracle either you’re not God or I don’t have enough faith. So i put pressure on God or I put pressure on myself.
Now in order to sustain my faith I must have miracle after miracle after miracle. I must have deliverance after deliverance.
I must have health wealth and prosperity.
Signs are designed to point to Jesus!
It was a symbol-laden miracle which should point us to Christ.
We are not to require ‘signs’, but we are to regard signs. They are not given to produce faith, but to inform faith.
Ian MacPherson
The incorruptible seed of the word of God produces faith.
having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
The hearing of The Word produces faith
Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Hearing - the thing heard , the act or sense of hearing! What you are doing now produces faith.
Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Do not work for food that spoils!
The women at the well she wanted endless supplies of natural water, to eliminate her need to make frequents trips to the well.
The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
This people wanted a endless supply of bread.
Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
The longing for man is to have release from our labor. A life of ease, affluence resources, but we realize we still have woes even if those needs are request are met.
Just look at OJ Simpson recently passed away money, fame, talent, recognition, he was in the hall of fame broke multiple food ball records. But accused of murder and allot of know he did it. and robbery the list goes on.
Just think about the celebrities of our day, access, wealth, adored, now incarcerated for sex trafficking etc. etc.
All things are full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing.
Just imagine everything in creation is full of energy, and theres inexpressible exhaustion from the sun the moon the stars plants and animals the world itself all laboring.
Just think about your life how many hours you work
How much effort it takes to raise a child
How much of your life was in school
How much we labor to preserve relationships. to start relationships and keep relationships . How much labor and inexpressible exhaustion is put into these things.
Every man has a life which is full of labor. Inexpressible labor/ exhaustion. And even still the heart is never satisfied. The eye seeing and the ear hearing.
Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
I am all that you need for ones soul to be satisfied in this life.
Lord give us this bread always ! -They where looking for a ongoing provision for there needs. The ultimately didn’t want to provide from themselves any more.
Hunger and thirst and metaphors to know God.
Eternal life is wrapped up in knowing who God is!
And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
When they said give us this bread always they are indeed saying that this bread has to be given again and again. But Jesus makes it clear that this bread only has to be given once!
