Introduction
We’re taking a break from Malachi because there has been a heavy burden on my heart.
There is an essential command that Jesus has given his people and I believe it is being ignored.
It’s an issue surrounded by confusion, controversy, and because of the confusion surrounding it I believe many are disobeying Christ and are blind to it.
It’s the issue of Baptism.
Why is this such a big deal for me?
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus not only commanded it, it is one of the first commandments he gave.
What Baptism Is (1 Peter 3:21)
What Baptism Is (1 Peter 3:21)
John the Baptist’s Baptism:
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John the Baptist was doing this to teach the Israelites about repentance. It was a symbol of washing, showing that they needed to be cleaned of their sins. It’s important to know that John distinguishes two kinds of baptisms
Spiritual Baptism:
Inward - Done by God to You
Physical Baptism:
Outward - Done by You Towards God
Word Definition: Immersion
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
What is Baptism?
Baptism is spiritual immersion into Christ’s death and resurrection, accompanied by a physical sign being immersed in water.
Baptism is a outward sign of being immersed in water as a response to God for the way he has immersed you into Jesus’ resurrection.
It’s an appeal to God in a clear conscience.
Why Jesus Wants Every Believer to Be Baptized
Why Jesus Wants Every Believer to Be Baptized
Baptism is Following Jesus’ Example
Jesus did many things we cannot do. But many things he did do were to be an example to us.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Baptism is Answering Jesus’ Command
It became so synonymous with conversion that the word has is used interchangeably.
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Baptism is Intimacy with Jesus’ Resurrection
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Baptism is Uniting Jesus’ People
There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Baptism is Teaching Jesus’s Life
I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
While John the baptist was doing a baptism of repentance, that baptism was still proclaimed and taught in Israel.
What a wonderful way to go to all the world and preach the gospel to all nations!
Biblical Reasons to NOT be Baptized:
Biblical Reasons to NOT be Baptized:
You do not claim to follow Christ
How can you make an appeal to follow God if you and him are not on good terms?
You must be saved by grace through faith. Every time baptism is mentioned, it is described by people
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’
You do not understand the gospel
And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. There were about twelve men in all.
You think that it will increase your chances of getting in heaven.
He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
How To Pursue Baptism
How To Pursue Baptism
Talk to the Lord
Talk with your parents
Talk with your church
Most of you do not go to Grace. My goal is not to persuade you to this church or to this church’s stance on Baptism. I want you to obey Christ and he has.
And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
What if, you don’t like the local church your parents have taken you to?
Well I cannot speak for you, but let me share this with you: What church did the Eunuch have? What prevents you from being baptized?
