Notes
Transcript
The Spirit of the Lord wants you to know how to move in Resurrection power! Today you will discover what hinders access to that power.
The same power that Raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you
You should be flowing in that dynamic power daily
The Law of sin and death is what diminishes our access to Resurrection power
The Law of life sets us free from the Law of sin and death
Jesus is calling you today to experience Resurrection power from His Indwelling Spirit!
Romans 8:1–4 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Condemnation is the polar opposite of Justification. When you are in Christ, you have been justified. You are not condemned!
This is because you are under the Law of Life in Christ Jesus and not the law of Sin and Death.

The Law of Sin and Death

The link between The Flesh and Sin

The word for Flesh here is the Greek word sarx.
sarx has been used by Paul to mean:
The tissues of the body — Rom 2:28
Natural Descent — Rom 1:3
A synonym for the human race — Rom 3:20
Human Nature — Rom 8:30

The flesh is an attitude or inclination operating in complete rejection of the divine will that requires self-sacrificial submission, choosing rather the free expression of anything and everything that will bring self-gratification. It is in this flesh that the law of sin and death moves and has its being.

You can either live according to the flesh or according in the flow of the Spirit and Resurrection Power.
To move in the Spirit, you must deny the flesh.
The love of acquisition and an appetite for self-gratification will deaden the instinct for self-sacrifice.
David E. Garland
The great Christian duty is self-denial, which consists in two things: first, in denying worldly inclinations and its enjoyments, and second, in denying self-exultation and renouncing one’s self-significance by being empty of self.
Jonathan Edwards
Matthew 16:24 ESV
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
The law of sin and death lives and moves in the Flesh!
This generation has an addiction to self-gratification. If feels good, do it.
Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Romans 8:7–8 ESV
7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
True happiness is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.
Helen Keller
There is no greater purpose than that of Christ. Forsaking the flesh and pursuing the things of the Spirit of God is the greatest purpose you will ever have. We must free ourselves from the chains of the flesh!
How can we free ourselves from the grip of the flesh?
We must take up our cross.
We must die to the flesh.
We must follow Him.
Romans 7:21–25 ESV
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Jesus is the only answer. He is the deliverer.
The law of sin and death is born in sin but finds its destruction when we die with Christ upon the Cross. You must come to the Cross to be free of the Law of sin and death.
When Christ calls a man he bids him come and die.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Were it not for sin, death had never had a beginning, and were it not for death sin would never have had an ending.
William Dyer; Anonymous
God had condemned sin before, but never so efficiently as in the death of his Son.
Charles Spurgeon

What are the Works of the Flesh?

The Preacher’s Commentary Series, Volume 31: Galatians / Ephesians / Philippians / Colossians / Philemon (Walking in the Spirit)
For Paul flesh is a reference to our whole selves, not to a part of us that is dirty and distasteful. To live in the flesh is to live as a member of human society in a physical body. Flesh also denotes a domain of power, a sphere of influence in which one lives
Galatians 5:19–21 ESV
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

A Fleshly Mind or A Spiritual Mind

The whole trouble with humanity is that is has lost its true mind, it has become insane. It needs to get back the mind it once had. The mind needs to be restored to a condition which has been lost.
Christian Conduct, 106
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
What use is deeper knowledge if we have shallower hearts?
Leonard Ravenhill
Romans 8:5–8 ESV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

What is on your mind?

The Greek word here for mind is phronousin. It is in the present tense, “Keep on being mindful or or aspiritng for . . .
When your mind is on the things of the flesh you keep seeking the things of the flesh. You are focused on those things.
Also with the Spirit. When your mind is on the things of the Spirit, that is what you are focused on daily.
This is why reading and memorizing the Word is so vital. It keeps our thought on Godly things.
A Christian mind is a mind which thinks Christianly about everything.
John Stott
One of the highest and noblest functions of a man’s mind is to listen to God’s Word, and so to read his mind and think his thoughts after him.
John Stott
He that hath slight thoughts of sin never had great thoughts of God.
John Owen
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; be all else but naught to me, save that Thou art; be Thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The Fleshly Mind

Against God
Forsakes God’s Word
Is Self-Focused
Is Pleasure Focused
Does not Sacrifice
Thinks of the Here and Now rather than Eternity
Relies on Self rather than God
The Fleshly Mind is Slothful
Is controlled by Appetites
The Fleshly Mind is Prayer-less
Why Revival Tarries CHAPTER ONE With All Thy Getting, Get Unction

The offense of prayer is that it does not essentially tie in to mental efficiency. (That is not to say that prayer is a partner to mental sloth; in these days efficiency is at a premium.) Prayer is conditioned by one thing alone and that is spirituality

It is not by submitting to outward laws that we grow in holiness and serve God acceptably, but by surrendering to the indwelling Spirit of God.
Warren W. Wiersbe

The Spiritual Mind

The Spiritual Mind is a mind that is focused on the resurrection power. It is consumed by the knowledge that Jesus is alive and active in our life.
The Spiritual Mind experiences the Resurrection daily.
The Spiritual Mind seeks to know God’s Nature

It is important to study the nature of God with humility and reverence, for God’s magnificent essence surpasses human comprehension.

Isaiah 55:9 ESV
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
The Spiritual mind thinks on pure and lovely things. It is not filled with bitterness and rage. It is filled with God’s presence.
Philippians 4:8 ESV
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Still Not Professionals: Ten Pleas for Today's Pastors Brothers, Supernatural Does Not Mean Stupid (John Piper)

So after our hearts undergo a gospel renovation, the next room for refurbishing is our mind: Think on these excellent things. Fill your mind with excellence. Beauty. Justice. Purity. Honor.

Resurrection Power Dwelling in You

Romans 8:9–11 ESV
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
The same power that brought Christ back from the dead is operative within those who are Christ’s. The resurrection is an ongoing thing.
Leon Morris
What is burning in my spirit is the fact that the very power that raised Jesus from the dead is the power that animates my body.
Since I’m a believer that same Resurrection power that conquered the death of Jesus and brought Him back to life is in me.

You are not in the Flesh if God’s Spirit is in you

The Law of sin and death has no power over me because I’m a man filled with Resurrection power.
If I get sick, resurrection power dwells in me
If someone else is sick, resurrection power dwells in me to bring healing to them
I’ve been made free from the Law of Sin and Death because of this Resurrection power that dwells in me
Filling goes beyond indwelling by the Spirit. Indwelling refers to the Spirit taking residence within a believer, while filling is the direction or control the indwelling Spirit possesses as the believer draws on his presence.
Darrell L. Bock
Resurrection Power is within us! We are His Temple because His Spirit dwells within us. We are filled with Grace, Love, Power, Praise. Because God’s Spirit is within, We are the most victorious people on the planet.
I’m filled with Resurrection power!
1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
The Spirit that Raised Jesus from the dead is in you.
Galatians 4:6 ESV
6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Whether you are a man or a woman, you are called a son by God because sonship denotes being an heir. Those who are filled with resurrection power receive all the blessings that God has.
2 Corinthians 4:11–14 ESV
11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. 13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.

How can you know if you are in Christ?

1 John 4:13 ESV
13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
Abiding in Jesus is not a one time prayer of faith for fire insurance.
μένω (menō), vb. remain; stay; reside.
It means to continue a certain state, condition, or activity.

Abiding in Christ means you follow His Word

1 John 3:24 ESV
24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
If you have not experienced resurrection power, Today is your Day. Come surrender your life to Jesus. Forsake the Law of sin and death. Come to the law of Life!
How has the Law of Sin and Death destroyed your life?
Depression?
Sickness?
Emotional conflicts?
Family trauma?
Trapped by a sinful habit?
Resurrection Power is here to deliver you from the Law of Sin and Death.
