Introduction

Greetings…
v
Colossians 3:5–8 ESV
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Colossians 3:9–11 ESV
9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

God’s Standard For Modesty

A Pure & Upright Mind.

Throughout the scriptures God has been very clear on his expectations for his people to have a pure and upright mind.
Titus 1:15–16 ESV
15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
Proverbs 11:3 ESV
3 The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
Psalm 17:2 NKJV
2 Let my vindication come from Your presence; Let Your eyes look on the things that are upright.
God wants our purity of mind to lead us to…

A Pure & Upright Body.

Once Adam and Eve knew they were “naked” and they were ashamed of their nakedness “God clothed them.”
Genesis 3:21 ESV
21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
Ezekiel 16:8 ESV
8 “When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine.
When God had the Israelites create an altar that was high above and that required the priests to climb up to it he made certain that “their nakedness was clothed fully.”
Exodus 28:40–42 ESV
40 “For Aaron’s sons you shall make coats and sashes and caps. You shall make them for glory and beauty. 41 And you shall put them on Aaron your brother, and on his sons with him, and shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests. 42 You shall make for them linen undergarments to cover their naked flesh. They shall reach from the hips to the thighs;
Are we not priest today, who have obeyed the gospel?
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
When God wrote about clothing he made the point clear that clothing was not to draw attention to one’s self but to one’s purity.
1 Timothy 2:9–10 ESV
9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.
1 Peter 3:3–4 ESV
3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

The Consequences Of Immodesty

Immodesty Leads Others Directly To…

Sexually lusting over you.
Matthew 5:28 ESV
28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
1 John 2:16 ESV
16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
Thinking you enjoy sexual or crude joking.
Ephesians 5:4 ESV
4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
Joining in with your sensuality or lewdness.
Galatians 5:19 (NKJV)
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness
Galatians 5:19 (ESV)
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality
Think you are ok physical sexual immorality.
Ephesians 5:3 (NKJV)
3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints
Hebrews 13:4 ESV
4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
1 Corinthians 6:9 (ESV)
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality

Immodesty Leads You Directly To…

Illegitimate Pregnancy
2 Samuel 11:2–3 ESV
2 It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. 3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
2 Samuel 11:4–5 ESV
4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”
Murder
Matthew 14:6–8 ESV
6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, 7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”
Matthew 14:9–11 ESV
9 And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. 10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, 11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
We could go on and on.
Immodesty leads to drug abuse (low self esteem), STDs (AIDS), etc…

Christians Must Take A Stand

Parents Must Stop Immodesty.

Too many “Christian” parents are not modest or do not promote modesty in their lives much less their children’s lives.
How can a mom or dad promote modesty and talk about modesty when they are wearing clothing themselves that is tight, fleeting, or see through?
Moms and dads know very well what teenage boys and girls are thinking.
When they send their sons or daughters “outside their homes” with clothing that should only be worn in the bedroom and not even outside there we have a series problem.
It’s no wonder we have “so many” teens having babies “in the brotherhood” before they are married.
Too many parents have forgotten Ephesians 6:1-2.
Ephesians 6:1–2 (ESV)
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise)
Modesty starts at the home where there is an effort to put…

Purity Above Popularity.

If the activity, sport, club, or whatever our children might want to be in does not promote purity above popularity in what they are wearing it is not something that should be done.
No Christian should be supporting the outfits that accentuate the body so that no one has to guess what the other is hiding below the clothing.
1 Peter 3:4 ESV
4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

Conclusion

v
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32–33 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
