Couple things to know about the book before we continue
was written about 960 BC
was written as an entire book later was divided because of scroll length
Anonymous Author Samuel maybe the first part
Written to the entire kingdom of Israel
What would you say is the main theme of this book?
In 1Samuel 1 we see a humble lady (Ana) and a proud lady (Penina). Not only that we also see Elkanah thinking he is la ultima coca-cola de el desierto.
Hannah prays for a son. Eli in his arrogance mistakes her for being drunk but she humbly responds to false accusations. But then joins her in prayer and God listens and gives her a son.
Read Hannah’s prayer 1 Samuel 2:1-10. This prayer is what this book is all about. God humbling the proud but lifting up the humble
Some Quick Examples that Follows this
Eli’s sons
The people of Israel take the ark to the battle field
Dagon falls face down before the ark
Ebenezer (stone of help)
Israel asks for a king
King Saul
King Saul’s promising future. His father Kish was rich and influential and Saul was tall and handsome.
1 Sam 9;1-2 Read out of RVR 1960. 2 Hebrew words here “Gibbor” (manly/hero) “Hayil” (Power/wealth) But look at what he says in 1 Sam 9:21. Also when they gathered name him king in the next chapter they couldn’t find him because he was hiding and the Lord had to tell Samuel where to find him. So he was very humble at the start.
So what happened? he was doing good and winning a lot of battles and he thought for a second it was because of him. He felt he was worthy to sacrifice the offerings although he wasn’t a Priest. y en ese momento Dios lo rechazo.
Shepherd boy David
We then see that God selects a new king and this time it was different. No mention of father being prominent and he was just a shepherd. We know the story how he was chosen and we see that he was the most humble. But that humble boy was to be exalted when he decided to face perhaps the most arrogant of all the characters so far.
The Philistine Champion
This guy was a giant and a champion. He taunt and said lots of arrogant things to the humble children of Israel. And we know the story. God humbled that champion through this shepherd boy. Now the shepherd boy is exalted while the champion is humbled. This is the story of Samuel if we continue our journey we will see that David also became proud, made mistakes and God had to humble him. But we will leave it here for now and look at how those stories can help us today.
Application Today
Isaiah 40:4–8 RVA 2015
Y yo respondí: —¿Qué he de proclamar?
All valleys will be raised up and all mountains made low. Osea we all will be in equal ground. In Christianity there is no room for altaneria. And we as men should lead in this area.
The Dominance of Men Through Out The Ages
Men has always ruled and been on top so we may feel entitled or like we run the world. But the Lord said that we are like grass. In marriage we are to love our wives and not lord over them. We wrongly believe because we are the head that we should always make all the decision and lead in everything but thats a misconception. So what does being the “head” means? Look at 1 Cor 11:3
1 Corinthians 11:3 RVA 2015
Can anyone explain the trinity exactly? keep in mind “The Shema” and see if you or anyone can completely explain it. God made a unit in the garden just like he is a unit. And when they sinned, God told them the consequences of their actions, first to the serpent then to the woman and then to the man. One of the woman consequences was that her man will Lord over her but that wasn’t God intention in the beginning. Jesus has come so all valleys be raised up and all mountains be made low.
Conclusion
Tengo una pregunta para hacerle. If everything I am and have I owe it to another, can I boast? Paul asked this question in Romans 3:27
Romans 3:27 CSB
27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By one of works? No, on the contrary, by a law of faith.
