CONFESS & BELIEVE SCRAMBLE
PREPARED SCRIPTURE CARDS
Write out each word from Romans 10:9-11, including a card with the reference, on separate index cards.
Mix up the cards and lay them face down in two piles on one side of the room.
When students arrive, place them in three teams and line each team up single file across the room from one of the piles.
Choose a type of movement (skipping, hopping, walking sideways).
When you say go, the first person in each line must make it to their team’s pile of cards by moving the way you described.
Each student will flip over one card, then move to the back of the line.
Once all cards have been flipped, each team will move to their cards and unscramble the verse.
Read both verses out loud.
Explain that this is the gospel in a nut shell.
Paul asks the church that how can someone respond if they’ve never heard the message?
God has also given us a message to share—the gospel—and instructions—to go and tell all people.
TEACHING
TEACHING
Main Point: Despite fear and doubt, Disciples must Confess and Believe in Jesus and share Him with others.
Last week:
Jesus forgave those who harmed Him.
He comforted others, even though He was suffering.
He remained committed to His Father.
The events tonight happen as soon as evening comes.
Despite fear and doubt, Disciples must Confess Jesus as Lord. (27:57-66)
To confess Jesus as Lord, we have to know Him and believe He is who He said He is.
Joseph of Arimathea - Matthew 27:57-61
Rich, member of the Sanhedrin, Above all a Disciple of Jesus
Asks for Jesus’s body - Pilate COMMANDS them to give it
Wraps body in a clean linen cloth, new tomb = great expense
This is a king’s burial, great honor
Chief Priests and Pharisees Matthew 27:62-66
Chief Priests and Pharisees GATHER after the day of Preparation [on the Sabbath!]
They think Jesus is an imposter (πλάνος) AND They think His DISCIPLES will deceive others (πλάνη) by STEALING him - same word
They COMMAND Pilate to SECURE the TOMB
Pilate give them soldiers They SECURE the TOMB (τάφου) and seal the STONE with the guard of Soldiers
Despite fear and doubt, Disciples must Believe Jesus is Risen.
The women and the soldiers are both afraid, but they react very differently. Matthew 28:1-10
The Angel (2-3)
BEHOLD: A great EARTHQUAKE (σεισμὸς) happened because an Angel ROLLED away the STONE and SAT on it
He shines brightly and has clothing as white as snow
The Guards (4)
guarding because of FEAR, TREMBLED (ἐσείσθησαν) same word as the earth quake
became as the dead
Matthew 27:52 “52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,”
Jesus’s death cause many to RESURRECT from the TOMBS,
His RESURRECTION caused the guards to become like the dead at His TOMB)
We’ll see what else they do in a minute
The Women (5)
Angel tells women not to FEAR Jesus isn’t here He’s RISEN - they don’t fall out!
They Come see the place where He was (6)
Angels instructions BEHOLD: He’s gone ahead into Galilee, there you will see Him, not here
QUICKLY go tell His DISCIPLES he is RISEN (7)
Women Response:
(8) they are still afraid but Joy is overtaking them!
(9) Jesus meets them and says REJOICE (χαίρετε)
Grab His feet and worship Him
Jesus says do not FEAR to go, tell my brothers to GO AWAY to Galilee; they will see Him there (10)
BEHOLD: the Soldiers tell the Chief Preists what happened Matthew 28:11-15
Again the Chief preists gather now their fear leads them to lie, exactly what they accused Jesus and His followers to do! (13)
The Chief Preist had deceived the people into crucifying Jesus
this second deception is worse, not even the resurrection opens their eyes to who Jesus really is
They are also going to lie more to the governor to cover their own butts and the soldiers
Despite fear and doubt, Disciples must make disciples of others.
DISCIPLES go to Galilee and they finally see Jesus Matthew 28:16-20
They WORSHIP Jesus, but some doubt (Hesitate Matthew 14:31 – Peter walking on water) (17)
We will look over the next few weeks at what happens but Matthew is ending his gospel here, He leaves the most important part though
Here is Jesus’s command MAKE DISCIPLES
He uses the word all is four ways!
He has ALL authority - Lord and King of the Universe (18)
They are to make disciples of ALL Nations (19)
They are to teach these new disciples ALL that Jesus has commanded (20)
He promise they won’t be alone - He is ALWAYS with them (20)
The Bible teaches that when a Christian dies, he or she immediately is with the Lord in a state of bliss and perfection.
For those who are not in Christ, life after death results in being separated from Christ in a state of suffering, even though future judgment remains.
Both Christians and non-Christians will live forever:
In Christ in perfect, sinless bliss with God
Apart from Christ in eternal punishment for their sins.
Christ is Risen!
We must confess Him as Lord
and Believe God raised Him from the Dead
Then Through faith, we are united to Christ
and share in the promise of being resurrected
Sin’s curse has been removed,
death has been defeated,
and we are assured of everlasting life with God.
