Importance of Music in the Church
Importance of Music in the Church
16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.
5 Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the Lord with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.
33 And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.
It was important enough to be an appointed task, a constant task, and task worthy of many workers.
1. God is Moved By Music
11 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place: (for all the priests that were present were sanctified, and did not then wait by course:
12 Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:)
13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord;
14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.
14 And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
GOD IS OUR SONG -
2 The Lord is my strength and song, And he is become my salvation: He is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; My father’s God, and I will exalt him.
14 The Lord is my strength and song, And is become my salvation.
2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: For the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; He also is become my salvation.
GODS STATUTES ARE MY SONGS
54 Thy statutes have been my songs In the house of my pilgrimage.
GOD GIVES SONGS
10 But none saith, Where is God my maker, Who giveth songs in the night;
7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
8 Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night his song shall be with me, And my prayer unto the God of my life.
WHO DO WE SING TO?
1 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing.
HOW SHOULD WE SING?
31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
When you sing a special it should be heartily unto the Lord. Not unto men.
When you sing congregational songs, sing heartily unto the Lord
Talent is not a requirement. It is not about you or I. A song is something we do unto the Lord
HOW LOUD SHOULD WE SING?
1 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: For praise is comely for the upright.
2 Praise the Lord with harp: Sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
3 Sing unto him a new song; Play skilfully with a loud noise.
16 But I will sing of thy power; Yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: For thou hast been my defence And refuge in the day of my trouble.
1 Sing aloud unto God our strength: Make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: Let them sing aloud upon their beds.
1 O come, let us sing unto the Lord: Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: But the righteous doth sing and rejoice.
WE SHOULD SING DESCRIPTIVELY

He is our Refuge

He is our Strength Psalms 81:1
WHEN WE SING WE SHOULD SING WITH TRUE DOCTRINE
7 For God is the King of all the earth: Sing ye praises with understanding.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
5 Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: For great is the glory of the Lord.
THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS
We need to present our music in a Holy way
29 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come before him: Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever.
22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
2 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
8 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: Fear before him, all the earth.
7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
OUR LIFE SHOULD BE HOLY
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
44 For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
45 For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
WHERE DO WE SING?
49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, And sing praises unto thy name.
9 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.
A Psalm of praise.
1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
2 Serve the Lord with gladness: Come before his presence with singing.
3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, And into his courts with praise: Be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; And his truth endureth to all generations.
Sing with the mindset of coming before God
1 Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, And his praise in the congregation of saints.
20 The Lord was ready to save me: Therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments All the days of our life in the house of the Lord.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: Let them sing aloud upon their beds.
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
HOW LONG DO WE SING?
8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, That I may daily perform my vows.
1 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
33 I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
WE WILL SING IN FUTURE ETERNITY
9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
WHY DO WE SING? This could be both the motivation and purpose.
THANKS, PRAISE!
46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God.
6 I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.
49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, And sing praises unto thy name.
13 Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength: So will we sing and praise thy power.
4 Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, And give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
2 Sing forth the honour of his name: Make his praise glorious.
REMEMBRANCE & WITNESS
19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.
21 And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.
4 Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, And give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, And shall sing of thy righteousness.
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
