Hebrews 8:10–12 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. That those who do not know you be brought into the right way of salvation, which is to know that you are only God,
and that he, whom you have sent, is Jesus Christ.
Likewise, we pray that they whom you have already endued with your grace,
and illuminated their hearts with the knowledge of your Word,

HEAR NOW THE VERY WORD OF GOD
Psalm 16
A Miktam of David.
1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.
4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
May the Lord add His Blessing to the Reading of His Word

Sermon Text and New Testament Reading

Hear Now the Very Word of God

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.

58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.

59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud

60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.

61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate

63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’

64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”

65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.”

66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

The Resurrection

28:1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.

4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.

5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.

7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”

8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.

10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

The Report of the Guard

11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place.

12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers

13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’

14 And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”

15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

The Great Commission

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

“The Grass Withers the Flower Fades But the Word of Our God Shall Stand Forever”

HP Matt 27:57-28:20 Jesus was Raised to fulfill His Promise to the Elect.

Vs 57-66 Jesus’s Body is secured in the Tomb
English Standard Version (Chapter 27)
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.
So to begin Matthew gives a a great record that Jesus was DEAD.
Not somewhat dead
Not almost dead.
When Christ finished his cross work in verse 50 he really did die.
Verse 50 says
Matt 27:50 says

And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

Mark 15:37 “And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.”
Luke 23:46 “Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”
John 19:30 “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
So by all the gospel accounts Jesus died.
And remember he died for the sins of all his Elect.
That you would not have to pay the penalty for your sin.
Rather Christ died for all your sins if you are his sheep.
So that is why it is so important that Jesus did actually die.
AND THAT IS WHY Matthew does a great job at giving us the details of his burial.
This Rich man from Arimathea who already had a tomb goes to the official who ordered and carried out his execution.
He goes to Ponticus Pilate and asks for the body.
PiIate issues an official order as the town magistrate.
Joseph doesn't do anything shady or underhanded
Rather he wrap’s Jesus’s body in a clean linen shroud.
Just as we would today clean the body up and place our relative in nice cloths before we bury him or her.
Joseph then Lays him in a new tomb.
Which Joseph cut the tomb out himself of the rock.
And after he laid Jesus’s body in the tomb
he sealed it by rolling a great stone in front of the entrance to the tomb.
And as Joseph leaves Matthew points out that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary are sitting across from the tomb as Joseph did this.
This was a small funeral service for the King off Kings.
Unless all those who were there are not mentioned in the text.
Maybe they are preparing for the Sabbath which was the day after Jesus was crucified.
Obviously Matthew and some of the other disciples might have been their to witness what happened to write about it in the Gospels.
They witnessed on Friday Christ’s crucifixion and his burial took place on the same day Friday.
The next day we pick up in verse 62 with more plotting on the part of the Chief Priests and the Pharisees.
Verse 62 says
Next starting at verse 62

The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate

So the Chief Priest and the Pharisees are thinking this is when the disciples are going to make their move.
They had many followers when Jesus was living.
They even had the centurion at his death declaring this Truly was the Son of God after the earthquakes
The temple curtain was torn.
their were bodies of dead saints raised and walking around the streets.
We can’t have anymore of this.
They must have thought the disciples were magicians to pull all this off in front of all these people.
And there grand finally is going to be stealing away Jesus Body to prove their claims that Jesus was the Christ.
I think the Chief Priest and the Pharisees must have been pretty paranoid.
Drunk on power
wanting to snuff out anyone who claimed to be the long awaited Messiah.
As we know there were certain Sadducees that all together denied that a resurrection would ever come to past.
But if anyone in the temple courts were to believe the the resurrection had occured it should have been these Pharisees.
Instead they tell Pilate we need to Cut these deceptive disciples off at the pass.
We Need to get troops to guard the entrance of the tomb asap so they can keep their movement from growing.
We just put this imposter to death lets make sure his followers don’t deceive us and spin a yarn of his resurrection.
And does Pilate acomodate the Chief Priest and Pharisees?
Of corse he does
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
Did you notice when the Chief Priest and the Pharisees were doing all this wheeling and dealing with Pilate and securing of the Tomb.
On their Holy Day. the Sabbath on Saturday.
That is what 62 said the next day after the Day of Preparation.
So after killing the Messiah they continued defiling the Jewish Sabbath not worshiping God but trying to continue in the persecution of His Son.
Next in Verses 1-10

Vs 1-10 Jesus is Raised from the dead and Worshiped.

Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

Here we have some amazing things that happen.
Another earthquake
Just as their was one when Jesus died
Their was one when he rose from the dead.
We have here an account of the manner of the resurrection of Christ,
as far as the Lord would allow us to know this great mystery.
There was a great earthquake.
When he died, the earth that received him, shook for fear; now that he arose,
the earth that held him,
leaped for joy in his exaltation.
As we should leap for joy because of his exaltation
This earthquake did loosed the bonds of death,
the earth shakes off the chains of the grave,
The grave could no longer hold him.
And we have the fulfilment of prophecy out of Haggai 2:6-7

For thus says the Lord of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land.

7 And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts.

God is literally shaking the heavens and the earth at the resurrection of His Son.
And God’s Glory is springing forth from the grave that could not hold him.
No amount of guards
Not even death itself could Hold Jesus because he was the Christ.
He was the Messiah
He was Raised to Fulfill His promise to the Elect of God.
And so Jesus’s Messenger declares his springing forth from the earth.
And this Angel of the Lord comes down from the heavens.
The guards that Pilate and the Priest sent are said to be trembling
They were so afraid that they didn’t move a muscle.
or were immobile like dead men.
This is the usual effect that angels have on men
And the Angel has the opposite effect on the two Mary’s because they are Christ’s Disciples.
And the Angel tells the women in verse 5 to not fear him and not to be afraid.
And this Angel is also a bearer of good news to the women that Jesus is not in the grave anymore.
He has Risen just as he said he would on the third day.
And the Angel directs them to inspect the empty tomb.
the one things that the soldiers and Pilate and the Pharisees were afraid of actually happened.
But not through deception not through the disciples deceit.
Becasue Jesus Christ truly is the Son of God.
The one who can forgive sins.
The one who forgave all his elects sins because he paid that penalty
And has now risen victoriously to keep that promise.
So the First thing that proves the resurrection was
1. The testimony of the angel to Christ’s resurrection (v. 1–8).
The Second thing that proves Christs resurrection is
II. His appearance to the women (v. 9, 10).
The angel tells the women to go tell the disciples that they will see the risen Christ in Gailee.
And as they depart their fear and sorrow for their saviors death becomes great joy as they run to tell the disciples the good news.
And as of now all they have seen is the angel
All they have seen is the empty tomb.
But now they see Jesus because he meets them on their Journey.
And Jesus says GREETINGS!
GREETINGS!
and thats all he had to say because they recognized him
An they take hold of his feet and Worship him.
I find it interesting that the place today where God meets with his people can be so neglected.
The very place where Christ says He will be every week on the Lords day.
where he gives you much more than just the WORD GREETINGS.
Can be neglected by His sheep.
Isn’t that the nature of the sin we must fight against daily.
The spirit might be willing the the flesh is definitly week.
So Jesus said Greetings!
The resurrected Christ meets them on the road holes in his hands and feet.
But that is all it took for the women GREETINGS and they took hold of Jesus’s feet.
they were so overcome with Joy and worshiped their Risen Savior.
And because Jesus can see into the heart of men and women.
He tells them as the Angel did to NOT BE AFRAID
DO NOT BE AFRAID
because he obviously new there was some fear in their heart.
The man you just watched being killed and buried.
Is now standing before you as he said he would on the Third Day.
There is Both Fear and Amazement
Becasue they are mere women standing before the God Man.
The second person of the Trinity
The Word of God.
The one who spoke the world into existence.
The one who knows your hopes your struggles
The one who has power to give or take away life.
Next we come to verses 11-15

Vs. 11-15 Jesus’s Resurrection is covered up.

And this coverup just happens to be another proof of his resurrection.
III. The confession of the adversaries that were upon the guard (v. 11–15). is a proof.
Verse 11-15 says

11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place.

12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers

13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’

14 And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”

15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

So what was the benefit to the guards?
They kept their lives.
Becasue if someone you were supposed to be guarding escaped or was taken and you are a Roman Guard
That meant the guards life would be taken.
So they not only got their life spared by the lie they perpetuated.
They Got paid by the chief Priests.
And what did the Chief Priests get out of it?
They get a government official to vouch that Jesus didn't Rise from the dead
And His body was stolen by his disciples.
Now what is wrong with this senario.
They are saying the Roman Soldiers were a sleep on duty.
Becasue soldiers take shifts not all of them would be sleeping during the night.
I Doubt Pilate would let them get away with this.
But maybe he would he did wash his hands of the whole situation ceremonially in front of the people when he had Christ crucified.
But the fact still stands that the guards confessed the truth to the chief priests of the ressurection.
Of the Angel
Of the earthquake
And instead of repenting and turning to God for forgiveness.
They continued in their sin. And find themselves bringing another prophecy of the Psalms to bear on the chief Priests life
Psalm 69:27–28 “Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.”
The Chief priest are Christs adversaries .
These soldiers are Christs adversaries.
And instead of believing the truth they believed a lie
And they are not at this point showing themselves to be the Elect of God.
But rather the Esau’s of the World the Seed of the serpent.
And yet out of the testimony of these adversaries of Christ they testify to the truth of the resurrection by their coverup.
All lies and liers are eventually exposed either in this life or the next.
Lastly in verses 16-20

Vs. 16-20 Jesus gives a command that will overcome the coverup.

IV. Christ’s appearance to the disciples in Galilee, and the great commission he gave them (v. 16–20).
Lets read verses 16-20
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Christ appears to his disciples .
They see him and worship him.
Things we can learn from this passage are
Christ appoints when and where he will commune with his disciples.
What Christ commands as a disciple we must do.
We are obligated to do so.
For these disciples it was to meet with him in Galalie
For you his disciples its to meet with him every Lords day until your death or his return in the final judgment of this world.
So we learn be where your Lord commands you to be.
We also learn that we will do this not perfectly.
Some of his disciples according to verse 17 doubted.
Maybe some of you have doubts or have doubted along the way as you have lived your life.
Christ died to forgive all your sins.
All Your Doubt
All Your Fear
All Your Sins of Commission
All Yours Sins of Omission
Jesus truly was Raised to fulfill His Promise to the Elect.
That he would be our God and we would be his people.
And as His people
As His Sheep.
Those called to himself in time and marked out before the foundation of the World
That Jesus Christ would Save us from our sin and misery and call us into his marvelous light.
All of you who know him
Obey your Lord as he has commanded you.
And Know that Jesus was Raised
Jesus has fulfilled all of his promises to His Elect.
And as Christ said I say yo you.
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus Christ.
Therefore Christ says
Go
Go and make disciples of all the nations
Go make disciples in Wichita Falls
And by doing as your Lord has commanded you.
He has promised a victory
He has promised that through your witness with his Word and spirit he will gather all his elect from all the corners of the earth.
and as the church fills and as she grows your minister and session will continue to baptize them in the Name of the Farther and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
They will baptize your House holds as we are commanded in the Scriptures
And as his elect continue to faithfully attend the worship of your God so that you might fulfill the other half of the great commission.
You must be taught to observe all the things Christ has commanded you,
By Your Pastor and your Elders every Lords Day 52 Sundays a year you can commune with Gods people and your Lord
learning to observe the things God has commanded you and all the ways Christ great Work on the cross has saved us sinners by the grace of God.
So Christ has conquered the grave and now sits at the Right hand of God the Father
This was accomplished for you in time 2000 years ago for His glory and your Salvation.
HP -Jesus was Raised to fulfill His Promise to the Elect.
Christ truly is with you always even to the end of the age.
