*Morning Announcement
What is something you wish you knew for certain that you don’t?
6 This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. 9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.
1 John 5 begins with discussing the prominent importance of trusting in Jesus Christ as Son of God and Lord/Savior.
Believing that Jesus is God is essential.
However, John was writing to a group of people who had been exposed to a heretical teaching that Jesus was “The Christ” when He was baptized and then no longer carried that identity when he was put to death… making him fully human… and that’s it.
This is a false teaching… John presents three infallible witnesses to prove that Jesus is fully God.
First Witness: the water
First Witness: the water
the water in this verse refers to his baptism in the jordan. After he was raised out of the water, the Spirit of God descended upon Him.
This was God confirming Jesus as His Son at the beginning of His ministry.
Second witness- the blood
Second witness- the blood
When Jesus was about to die, the Father spoke to Him...
28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
We also see the Father’s activity ...
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
In these accounts, the Father witnessed to the deity of His Son.
Third witness - The Spirit
Third witness - The Spirit
The Spirit of God in believers today functions to bear witness of the life and death of Jesus being the Son of God.
The Holy Spirit is the only person active on earth today who was present when Christ was ministering here.
How does the Spirit witness within the hearts of believers?
How does the Spirit witness within the hearts of believers?
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
His witness is seen in our confidence given by God, not one we strive to work up.
The Spirit also witnesses to us through the revealing of truth in His word.
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
This is not true for the unsaved man.

11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
As believers, we have eternal life...
This is the point of the book of John.... to give us confidence in our salvation marked by the evidences presented in this epistle....
One who practices righteousness… obedience
One who no longer practices sin...
Love for the church
ongoing repentance
presence of the Holy Spirit
Discipline of the Father
Convey your heart right now...
Convey your heart right now...
If there is the lacking evidence of evidence...
Consider your position before the Lord...
14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
Pray....
Unconfessed sin.
Pray God’s will.

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Ten: What Do You Know for Sure? (1 John 5:6–21)
Charles Spurgeon, the famous preacher, was working hard on a message but was unable to complete it. It grew late and his wife said, “Why don’t you go to bed. I’ll wake you up early and you can finish your sermon in the morning.”
Spurgeon dozed off and in his sleep began to preach the sermon that was giving him so much trouble! His wife wrote down what he said and the next morning gave her preacher-husband the notes.
“Why, that’s exactly what I wanted to say!” exclaimed the surprised preacher. The message had been in his heart; it had simply needed expression. So with prayer: if we are abiding in Christ, the very desires of our heart are heard by God whether we voice them or not.
This is all followed up by a reminder to God’s children...
16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
This is a reality for us today...
This is a reality for us today...
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Resist the world, live free in Christ Jesus. Endure this world...
Evidence One (Lifestyle of Obedience)
3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
Evidence Two (Lifestyle of Confession)
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
Evidence Three (Lifestyle of ongoing repentance)
6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
Evidence Four (Lifestyle of discipline of the Father)
8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
Evidence Five (Lifestyle of love for other believers)
14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.
Evidence Six (Lifestyle of the presence of the Holy Spirit)
24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
Evidence Seven (Lifestyle of Faith in Jesus Christ)
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.
