1 Samuel 16:1–13 (NKJV)
1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.” 4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” 5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 8 So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
I’m going to give you my Title up front today!! Get Ready for A New Thing!!
Let’s look at the background and at how we get to our text. One our main figures in our text today is Samuel. As a matter of fact this entire book is all about his life and the people he influenced by his ministry. This book starts off with his mom, Hannah. She wasn’t able to conceive a child, for years she was the ridicule of her sister wife Peninnah until she went to the temple and prayed to the Lord for a child. She prayed so hard the priest thought she was drunk, but the Lord answered her prayers. She named the child, Samuel and dedicated him to the Lord. Fast forward to when he was twelve years old working at the temple, he hears the voice of the Lord after the Lord had been silent. He had to deliver a hard message to his mentor and leader Eli about his dealings and everything he said came to pass!! So from then on he becomes the nations, Prophet, Judge, and Priest. He would rule in this way for a number of years until the Children of Isreal woke up on day and said We want a King!!
Now we can only imagine what was going through his mind. But according to scripture we know he was hurt. He had been their voice to God, their mediator between them and God. But God reassured him that they haven’t rejected him, they have rejected God. Even though this wasn’t in his plan, he allowed the children of Isreal to have a king. His name was Saul. God warned the people of what he would do and how they wouldn’t like it. So like the Lord said, 2 years into his reign he made a decision to disobey God. God had tole him to kill all of the Amalakites for what they did to the children of Isreal when they were coming into the land. But Saul took it amongst himself to keep what the Lord told him to kill.
How many out there know that What God says is important and we have to obey fully no matter how uncomfortable it is.
So after this God has now rejected Saul as king but allowed him to still sit on the throne. Now that we are all caught up.
Saul is still King but the man Samuel anointed is now no more. Samuel is mourning.
How many in here today are mourning something today.
May not be the death of a loved one, it maybe the loss of someone special. You may has just had to let go of someone special, had to cut ties with a best friend.
This is what Samuel is going through!! The relationship with Saul is now dead with no hope of coming back to live. We may have even become depressed over a missed opportunity, or what we thought was supposed to happen. These things are not comfortable, but people, circumstances, and situations are all under God’s control.
God tells Samuel to stop mourning? Why. Lord why I got to stop, because he was neglecting his responsibilities as priest, judge, and prophet. He is God’s prophet, He his a spiritual leader. Flip it on us!! We are men and women of God. We all have gifts and callings, things that God has called us to do. But some have sat out, some have stopped, and are mourning a previous move of God, previous traditions, a particular sound, that may or may not come back. And are like Samuel neglecting responsibilities. So Samuel had to come back to reality and stop morning and realize three things
The New Thing Requires A New Yes
The New Thing Requires A New Yes
So God gives him instructions
1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.”
Now when you are embarking on something that God has told you to do. Fear will try and set in!! Samuel said How can I go, Saul will kill me. You might be saying something similar, that my past will come back. I not sure if this is right. We said this on Wednesday Night, there will always be obstacles to Faith, you just have to push through. This new thing is going to require you to push harder and stay true to the commitment you gave to God!!. God told Samuel, Go to Bethlehem and offer up a sacrifice. Then I want you to sanctify yourselves. Why is this important Minister Frank. Romans 12:1
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
God wants your best. What better else to give God than yourself. We have to sanctify ourselves. How do we do that.
To Sanctify yourself means to make yourself separate. Samuel and the other had to take time and separate themselves from everything else. This means that as your say Yes to God, this means No to everything else. Sometime we think Yes just means yes for that moment in time. Your yes to God goes from today, to tomorrow, and everyday in between!! If you are going to let Go and let God have his way in your life. You will have to relinquish control of it. Before God got Samuel up, he could only thing about Saul. He wasn’t focused on what God was doing but when God sobered him up, I’m sure he had to say yes to God. We have to say yes to God. Because if we don’t things will be locked up! Progress gets blocked, doors don’t get opened. Samuel had to say yes, because David was coming. What are you looking forward too, what’s something that you feel is locked up that you may need to let Go of and allow God to fix. Just say yes
The New Thing Requires Fresh Eyes
The New Thing Requires Fresh Eyes
After Samuel and everyone consecrated themselves for the upcoming event. Samuel begins to do what the Lord wanted him to do and began to chose who he thought was God’s choice. God stopped Samuel again. He began to tell him
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
God stopped Samuel!! Why, Because He had seen enough of outward appearance. Saul was handsome and strong but his heart was deceitful. God was looking at the heart of it.
This goes on to say that God is also looking at our lives, our endeavors, with the same set of eyes. He’s looking at our worship setting the same way. He said is Joel 2:13
13 So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.
God wants us to look at everything with his viewpoint. We don’t always see right. His eyes searches and penetrate the heart. The secular world is set up that way. “Keep Up Appearances.” Some of the richest people we may see, behind the scenes are actually struggling to make it. We have made a life based off what looks good. But everything that Looks good ain’t good. Samuel was looking at the outward but God was looking at Jesse’s son’s heart.
We might not realize it but the things God blocked was because it wasn’t any good for us. But We can’t see it well. Isaiah 55:8-9
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
God looks beyond the temporary that things give us in the moment. God looks to the future. We may be thinking about 5 months from now. God is thinking 15 years from now. You may be planning now for your children, God has for your unborn grandchildren. You may be in school thinking 4 or 5 years from now. God has orchestrated your life for for the next 20 years. We need to pray God Open my eyes that I might see!! Open my eyes to what I’m missing, opportunities I need to take. Sometimes we miss new things that God is doing chasing after the old. We sometimes want the new things to be fancy, we want it be new fresh out of the package. Unh unh, Lord I’m used to a certain type of stuff. I”m used to a certain way of life. I’m used to a certain schedule on my job, I’m Good. But God is saying I’m trying to free you up.
We don’t always know, but God does!!
The New Thing Requires a Fresh Anointing
The New Thing Requires a Fresh Anointing
Samuel had went through seven of the sons of Jesse. Samuel says 1st Samuel 12:10-13
10 Then they cried out to the Lord, and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord and served the Baals and Ashtoreths; but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.’ 11 And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you dwelt in safety. 12 And when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the Lord your God was your king. 13 “Now therefore, here is the king whom you have chosen and whom you have desired. And take note, the Lord has set a king over you.
Jesse revealed that he had one more son tending the sheep.
Samuel said that We one set down until he comes!!
Do your realize that there are some people that can’t be healed unless you come. Unless you say yes, and realize the potential that is on the inside of you. Somebody is waiting on your Go. On your Yes!! But when you say yes, you can’t go out empty handed. You have to be anointed
The Anointing is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. The anointing of God empowers you for service to God. Nobody did anything in the Bible without the anointing, or better yet the Holy Spirit. This new that God is getting ready to give each and everyone of us. We need the anointing or the Holy Spirit to help us to be good steward of this new thing.
Closing!!
Closing!!
This new thing is available for everyone!! It is accessible to all. But it requires a new yes. This yes is constant. This yes sets you apart from others.
It also requires a new set of eyes, these eyes see the way that God wants you to see!!
It also requires a fresh anointing!! A fresh outpouring of God’s spirit!! You can try and try to do life in your own strength but it will never work!! You need the strength of God to come and help you in this walk with God!!
