Galatians 3:7-14. God preached the gospel. Sons of blessing by faith, cursed, Christ the redeemer to the curse. That we might be blessed by faith and get the Holy Spiry by faith.
Recap.
Paul will now continue to explanation about how OT also was showing how God made it possible to hear by faith (in Jesus) for all peoples.
Verse 7. Paul states that Understand/know that those of faith who are sons of Abraham (Abraham because he was made right with God before the law, and before circumcisem), -so not by law, but by faith could people become the sons of Abraham, including the Gentiles/ all other peoples. (Like last week how did we get the Spirt? By hearing with faith).
Verse 8. Paul now leads the readers to the Scripture, back to Gen 12:3, and explains how it the Old Testament was foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith (and not works of law). And preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, declaring that in you all the nations shall be blessed. PPT Gen 12:3. (God was always going to bless all nations). It was all before works as verse 6 said last time.
What wonderful words God preached the gospel beforehand, the gospel of faith in God’s provision of Jesus Christ. the blessing to all the nations.
Verse 9. Therefore, the people that believed by faith (those who are of faith) are blessed, along with Abraham, the man of faith. (Or see as a great man of faith because he believed God). The people of faith are blessed. The contrast to the curse. Explain how the law it set up blessing and curse. Paul now explaining that the blessing it by faith in God promise to Abraham. The law puts us under a curse, because we are not able to keep the whole law. PPT Citation
Verse 10. Paul writes that people that therefore rely on works of the law are under a curse. Because when we read the consequences of not for filing the law, we see the curse, not only what not to do but also what to do. If there is failure on either we are guilty. PPT. Deut 27:26. (The law was not the point, instead it was there to have us faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God – Like last week listen with faith. Not obey a law to do so and rely on ability to do that, no it was to listen to God obey by faith in God, not the law). Next comes the list of blessings in trusting God, and later the curses that comes by not trusting in God by faith. The law is not bad, but it exposes us it shows us how far we are form perfectly obeying it, and as Paul writes in Romans it was to show our need for God. In this case with the Galatians Paul now exposes the lacking understanding of the law, by the people that teach obedience to it, it brings you under a curse.
Verse 11. Paul states that it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, and cites: PPT Habakkuk 2:4. Who has just complained that God is not delivering his people, God responds trust in my words and live by faith, that is how the righteous will respond and live. Not by trusting in works of the law, or other people saying that God can’t save, or even the prophet himself that doubts whether God will deliver or why he will use and violent enemy to do so. God was going to do his work, would the people listen to Habakkuk. (Would he listen by faith).
Like the law was not going to justify, and just like the Gentiles could not save them self, God had to act and make it possible for all people to be justified by faith in Jesus’ work. (Luther and others struggling with works and lack of it to trust in Jesus works).
Verse 12 The law is not of faith, but is of action living to live by it and not by faith, - a refence to lev 18:5 If someone puts his trust in the law, they should live by it. And it is not faith in God anymore but one’s own actions and abilities. (For us it is trusting in the works we do, instead of trusting in Gods words and Jesus’ work, the gospel.). Right understanding of law and hearing by faith, would make us able with joy to serve God and others. Is not that we don’t do good works and service to God, but we don’t do it to be right with God. We are only to trust in Jesus works. And rely on the Holy Spirts power in us to do good work and service for God. Not our own righteousness and cleverness.
Verse 13. Paul is writing if the Galatians trust in the works of the law, they are trapped cursed by the law, but as Paul explains, Jesus Christ the messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law. How? By the gospel, that Jesus loved us and gave himself up, and died on a tree, Jesus in his redemption became a cursed to take our curs and redeem and justify us. – Refence is to Duet 21:23 That anyone that is hung on a tree is cursed. Wow, what a God what a redeemer Jesus, it would seem to good to be true, - by it only comes by faith,
Verse 14 And that is how Christ Jesus could be the blessing of Abrham that could be extended to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the Holy Spirt, by (hearing with) faith.
Righteousness was from belief faith. OT People was made right with God the same way as we.
And as Jesus said to the pharisees, the scripture is about me… And as Jesus had to explain, the scriptures about him to his disciples. Paul explains that God was preaching the Gospel in the OT, so that Jew and Gentil could be made right with God, by faith and believe. Abrahams blessing to the whole world was and is Jesus, the way the whole world could be blessed. Believing in Jesus work and Paul explained Jesus work as becoming a curse to redeem people from the curse of the law, in other words in word and deed and thinking we had rebelled against God, and have not fulfilled the law, and stand/stood cursed, but God made a way and send Jesus as a redeemer, and Jesus let him self be hung on a tree and took the curse. Jesus’ work was not only for the people ethnically from Abrahams line, it was for all who come to believe by faith, they could all be blessed and receive the Holy Spirt. As a sign that they are sons by faith.
[What about us today? Why do good works, why serve? Do good obey the 10 comandments? What are we doing? It is the same as last time and in the OT, it was to trust in God, and listen and obey by faith,]
What good news did God preach to Abraham? What does that mean for you? (by faith God spoke about Jesus to Abraham when he said all nations would be blessed by him).
How are we justified? And blessed? By faith a gift of God.
Christ Jesus is the blessing. And the gift og the Holy Spirt by faith.
God preached the gospel. Sons of blessing by faith, cursed, Christ the redeemer to the curse. That we might be blessed by faith and get the Holy Spiry by faith.
