Point One:
Point One:
What does it mean to be GOOD?
Jesus teaches us what goodness is in Luke 18:19
19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
Goodness is Godliness, to be good is to be like God.
Point Two:
Point Two:
I want to look at a passage in which Jesus calls Himself good, he claims Godliness, tonight we will be in John 10:11-15
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Jesus in this passage is using an analogy to connect to His audience. He is taking a super big topic literally that He is Good and God and using something they would understand a SHEPHERD
Now a shepherd wasn’t the most important person in society, they were often the lowest on the totem poll and so I love that Jesus uses that reference to describe Himself. As a servant that serves the sheep how Good is that!
Point Three:
Point Three:
Now Shepherds had three main jobs and thats what I want to end on tonight, how is God’s Goodness shown in this passage it is through the roll of the shepherd,
Shepherds Guide the Sheep: Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
God guides us and leads us through life
2. Shepherds Tend to the Sheep: Psalm 23:1-3
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
God cares for us
3. Shepherds lay their life down for the Sheep: John 10:11 “11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
What makes these three attributes all the more good is that Romans 5:8 says, “8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
The shepherd keeps his duties even when the sheep do not listen, many times you can see images of a shepherd pulling a lamb out of a hole just for it to jump back and yet that is how we are with God. God continually shows His goodness even when we jump back in the whole.
