Victory over Temptation | Matthew 4:1-11

amen ever been tempted Ever felt like you wanted to do something that you know that you're not supposed to do that our topic this morning. We're going to talk about Temptation which all of us have experience with am I wrong all of us at some point in our lives have been tempted. And today we're going to look at how the master Jesus handle Temptations in his life so that we can learn how to handle Temptations in our life when they come for they come regularly and sometimes the intensity keeps increasing and increasing so that we would fall so it this morning we're going to look at Matthew 4:1 to 11 as we continue our Series in the Book of Matthew. And we going to look at this morning victory over Temptation. How can we have victory over that patient? And

The victory over Temptation. So here's the message in a one-sentence the message in one sentence is that the devil always looked for opportunity to tempt us, especially when we are weak. So beware of his schemes and be ready to fight. Are you ready to fight? Alright, let's say it together the devil always looks for opportunity to tempt us, especially when we are weak. So beware of his schemes and be ready to fight father. May you help us this morning as we Face The Temptations not to fall into the schemes of the devil, but rather father help us to be strong. And overcome like Jesus overcame in Jesus name we pray amen. So let's look at it says Ben. Jesus was led up by the spirit Into the Wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Say what? Jesus was led by the spirit. Into the Wilderness to be tempted by the devil and after fasting 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry and a tempter came and said to him if you are the Son of God command these stones to become loaves of bread, but he answered it is written man. Shall not live by bread alone. But by every word that comes from the mouth of God and the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the Pinnacle of the temple and said to him if you are the Son of God roll yourself down for it is written. Somebody knows their Bible, huh. He will command his angels concerning you and on there. Hands, they will bear you up unless you strike your food against a stone. Jesus said to him again. It is written you shall not put the Lord your God to the test again the devil took him to a very high mountain and shout and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and they are glory and he said to him old is I will give you if you will fall down and worship me very simple. Just come and worship me. Then Jesus said to him be gone Satan for it is written you shall Worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve, then the devil left him and behold and rules came and were ministering to them.

Father be with us. No, help us to overcome The Temptations that entices Us in Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen. So the patients are very common as we know and all of us face Temptations when we least expect it before we go through our tax and before we look at some lessons this morning. So first of all, let's look at the woo the what the when and where of Temptations and our Focus this morning will be on the how to overcome Temptation. So who can be tempted we all are very smart, you know that if they see the devil will try to tempt Jesus, who are we not to be tempted every single one of us will face Temptation at some point. In our lives may be right now while you sitting right now you thinking about it than patient right now something that the devil is trying to tempt you in all of us will face the patient's Hebrews 4:15 said for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who is in every respect has been tempted as we are yet without sin throw all of us have faith and patience all of us will face more Temptations and every single moment. We have different temptations that come into our way and that's why the devil went after Jesus making that easy can get Jesus to be tempted than we would be without any power. But the great thing is that Jesus overcame Houston patients. Although Jesus was tempted just like us. Did he ever fall never Jesus never fell into temptation? And every time we fall into the schemes of the devil We are Becoming its food, but we have a savior that is greater than the devil because it says in 1st John he that is in me is greater than he that is in the world. So we don't have to fall into temptation. Remember Jesus face all kinds of Temptations. But Jesus was without sin Jesus never failed. Be sober-minded Be watchful your adversary the devil prowls like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour resist him firm in your face knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brother rude for all the world. See a lot of us would like to make excuses about temptation.

Like it's only us. But every single one of us, you will face various kinds of Temptations for some of us. We have greater proclivity in other areas than others but every single one of us face Temptation so we can let have any excuse like we are the only one that is being singled out. If others are able to overcome their Temptations, so can you and Jesus is saying that the same power that was as Jesus lives were in because the Bible says Christ in us the hope of glory Christ lives in us. We don't have to fall into temptation sensation is common to all of us all of us face all kinds of Temptations, but we don't have to fall into the patient's cuz I didn't have the day we choose to send that that we have to send. Which shoes to send that that we have to send will The Temptations come? Yes. I'll report fact. No. Will there be time then we falter yes, but do we have to always falter? No because Christ has given us his Spirit. We don't have to fall. So the what what is Temptation temptation is an enticement to act contrary to God's will any time that we are put into a situation to act contrary to God's will we are being tempted. That's when you at work you feel like you have to lie on the report to look good when you at work you messed up and you refuse to own up to it, and then you are tempted to cover your back. Because this is the new word in the workplace today. It doesn't matter whether you do your work well or not, as long as you cover your backs. As long as you do then you are. All right, you will keep your job and you will be fine, but not for the believer. The believer has Integrity in the workplace. Even if it's going to cost him or her his job because God gives us the power to overcome. Our Temptations. Temptation is an enticement to act contrary to God's will God's will for us is to tell the truth God's will for us is to act honorably in all situations. And God's will for us is that we honor him in every situation that we Face whenever we get an opportunity to disobey God we are being tempted temptation is an invitation to this. Obey God whenever you are presented with an opportunity to disobey God. You are being tempted. And therefore you need to act accordingly like Jesus did and not fall into your Temptations why Temptations you saw that it says Jesus was led by the spirit.

So we need Temptations James 1 verse 2 as I just mentioned count it all joy my brothers when you meet trials and patience of various kinds for you know that the testing of your faith for this is what steadfastness patients Unless that wrestlers have its full effect that you may be what perfect that you may be mature or that you may be strong that when Temptation comes. If not today devil not going to get me. I know this one. That you may be perfect and complete that means much sure lacking nothing. So if you have not been tempted, you will not know what you can overcome. So Temptations will come it's not playing this Temptations away. But Springs overcome those Temptations to have the tool to use the power that is already in us so we can say no temptation teaches us to say no when and where Temptation anytime. Any moments Temptations will come your way that they since can happen anywhere at any moment. So you got to be always ready. It's a fight. It's a battle. When do the adversaries attack? When you are at your weakest point when you least expect it, so that's why we need to be careful. Even when we are in our spiritual hi to be very careful because even in our spiritual lies the devil will find a way to sneak in and try to tempt us so that we can fall Temptation can happen anywhere at any moment, especially when we are weak member is we're looking at our texts. When did The Devil tempt Jesus as Jesus just went on a 40-day fast. So after Jesus came from the fast he was hungry. That's why we need to watch our anger when we're all lonely all kinds of thoughts come to our mind. And that's why God created us to be in community and God wants us to live in community, but we like to isolate and then there was a steady that was just showing up in them. Oh man, I can't do this but now pandemic is over a lot of students are still digging all their classes online while they live on campus and then when they doing their work working in a group with a partner instead of getting together, they working in their room on their computer with a partner that is in their room that maybe next to them while they're working together collaborating on the project.

Isolation would love to isolate ourselves and do things that makes absolutely no sense. So to stand it that working rooms next to each other just get together.

Not on the computer you need Community you need people in your life isolation is not good for anyone. The Bible says it is not good for man to be alone. That's how God designed us not to be alone. But our culture makes us gravitate toward isolation and self protectionism just myself. I'm just doing my own thing loneliness only lead us to temptation to touch that we not need to be having that we need to be in community. But when we are feeling lonely all kinds of Temptation comes our way when we feeling tired. Just rest. Don't try to do too much. That's when the Devil comes at. You and Charles Stanley say you just need to remember Philippians. 4:19. God promised to supply all your needs your hunger when you feel angry and you feel lonely. God says you don't have to be alone. When you tired got this I will give you rest cuz you can cast all your cares upon me now our topic this morning. How can we overcome Temptation how to overcome Temptation into our life Jesus style. So let us see how Jesus did it and so we can learn to do the same three steps to overcome Temptation. We see in our text this morning in Matthew chapter 4 The first one is that we need to know the devil's battle plan. We need to know the devil's battle plan. When you have a military commander. The first thing to do is to steady their enemies. They don't just get ready get the soldiers ready, but they study their enemies to know how to attack them when to attack them how to best overcome them to know how they will come at them. You need to know the devil's battle plan. The John 10:10 is very clear. It says defeat the Devil comes to only to do what steal kill and destroy that's the devil's plan for you to steal. What is yours to kill you and destroy you all to mately with everything that God has for you to Bible says God has a plan and a purpose for your life, but the devil's plan is to steal it from You guys plan to kill your dreams and to destroy you ultimately that's why we don't toy with the impatient. We don't toy with sin because these are not from God the devil wants to steal God's plan for you. He wants to kill your dreams and he wants to destroy you all to mately so that you go to hell with him or if you are a Believer he cannot get you to hell, but he will take out the suck the life out of you here on Earth. The Devil comes to kill steal and destroy but God's plan for you is that you will live on a bun Dent life not just in heaven, but right here on Earth. God wants you to have life and have it abundantly. So the first step in overcoming temptation is to know the devil's battle plan. His plan is to steal to kill and to destroy and do those come in all different ways. When the Devil Makes seen appearing more fun to you than actually serving God When The Devil Makes lying more appealing than telling the truth when the devil just all different things that you can think of making more peeling than honoring God. And that's how the devil gets you in 1st Peter 5:8. We looked at a earlier look at it in the New Living Translation says stay alert. Watch out for your great. Enemy. The devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to Devour the devil wants to eat you up.

So it's up to you now to know he's playing and stay out of it and he was just playing three ways three ways that the devil tempts us all the time. Any temptations that comes your way they only come in three forms look at it with me in 1st John 2 15 to 17. Do not love the world or the things of the world if anyone loves the world the love of the father is not in him. Here's his plan you ready for all that is in the world desires of the flesh.

the desires of the eyes and pride of life These are not from God but they are off from the world and the world is passing away along with its desires. But whatever does the will of the father abides forever desires of the flesh desires of the eyes and pride of life. That's how the devil get you set up first one last of the flash. So got so the devil the way he tried to text you is physical. He attacks the physical it's lust of the flesh is Passion its pleasure when the devil attacks you he attacks the physical he tried to make you look at things that are pleasurable but they are not really pleasurable. They may satisfy your flesh temporarily, but ultimately will destroy you just like Put said as receipt in the book of Hebrews. It says to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of Sin City. Yes sin can be pleasurable. But it's fleeting. Ultimately it will destroy you because the devil's plan is to kill to steal and to destroy the lust of the flesh that pleasure sexual desires glue to me. That's how the devil get you lust of the flesh. Every time that you are being tempted. It's going to be one of those three and you just need to become smart become educated to know that this is the lust of the flesh not today you not going to get me. I am going to honor God In My Flesh. I'm going to honor God in my body. Look at Jesus who says then Jesus was led up by the spirit Into the Wilderness to be tempted by the devil and after fasting 40 days and 40 nights. He was hungry flesh. And then the reason why often we are losing in the battle is because the devil knows the Bible better than we do. You see how old the devil is putting scripture. It says if you are the Son of God come into stones to become loaves of bread. He sees that you are the Son of God, right?

But Jesus went with him and tell him hey, it is written man. Shall not live by bread alone. But by every word that comes from the mouth of God and you will see a lot of the scriptures that I'm being used are found in Deuteronomy, and he's also fruiting the song but all of it is in the Bible does the devil knows the Bible and that you see that's why you cannot just listen to people using scripture because people can use scripture as a weapon and Tifa used scripture to Evanston never seen people just quoting scriptures to to go on with their sin of the flesh is weak. Twisting scripture. What does the rest of the verse says?

The spirit is willing. Yes, you are weak, but the spirit is willing and he that is in you is greater than he that is in the world. So don't tell me the flesh is weak. You just want your voice to be weak. You just want to do what you are about to do.

Feel little people twist scriptures to get their ways and that's what the devil is doing it twisting scriptures to tempt Jesus to get permission to do this, son of God. You have all power.

But by every word that comes from the mouth of God, so physical the devil will attack you in the fings that will he will make it seem pleasurable in the moment. So pleasure pleasure is one way that the devil will attack you it's the lusts of the flesh the second way the devil text you is the pride of life status position. Look at how he tried to get Jesus there. Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the Pinnacle of the temple and said to him if you are the Son of God throw yourself down for it is written sea Pride. Business was already the Son of God. What did he have to prove? If you are the Son of God throw yourself down for it is written by both its resting scripture. Again, that that's some 91. He says he will command his angels concerning you and on their hands. They will bear you up unless you strike your foot against a stone the devil knows the scripture. The devil knows the scripture and look at my Jesus. Did Jesus said to him again? It is written. You shall not put the Lord your God. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test with a pattern receipt here. We need to know what we are. Our work is found only in Christ and nothing else and Jesus said to the devil. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test lust of the flesh. Look at how the devil try to get Jesus during verse 8 again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and they are glory and he said to him all this I will give to you if you will simply do what? worship me Then Jesus said to him be gone Satan for it is written. Is it such a sacrifice is of being done? It's just one just it's it's crazy. It's the same thing. They still going on today and hear the devil told Jesus all these things. I will give to you if you fall down and worship me. That's all Hollywood is all about now today. I'll make you famous. But what's your soul?

Will destroy you and it's the same thing that the devil try to get Jesus into the Jesus says it is written you shall Worship the Lord your God and him Only You Shall Serve as a crossroad in Clarksdale. The devil makes things look very attractive into the world, but they are not really attracted. They are just really serious than messed up things. But you see if Jesus The Living Word of God. The only way was able to overcome Temptations was to quote the written word of God to the devil. What do you think should be our position? We need to do the same. The only way we do that is to know the battle plan of the enemy. You see when Jesus did that look what happened in verse 11, but I'm the devil left him and behold Angels came and were ministering to him. Wasn't that what Peter told us to resist the devil and he will flee from you see Jesus resisted the devil in the devil's left them alone by telling the same story and Lucas is the devil left him to seek a more opportune time to tempt him. So when you overcome Temptation one time don't think that it will be over. The devil will look for another opportunity to get you and that's why you have to know that you are at a fight. It's a battle. You got to be ready at any moment. The first one know the devil's battle plan know the devil's battle plan in the second is to know the scriptures know the scriptures just like you stole the devil knew the scripture that Jesus knew how to apply the scriptures and Jesus counteract every attack of the devil everything that the devil makes it seem like it was going to be good for him. He counteracted with the scriptures Believers. We need to be careful. A little bus we might have overcome sexual Temptations. We might have overcome compromising our integrity, but we need to be very careful those of us were walking with God is that devil will make spiritual things attractive. And that's how the devil will get you you see he came to Jesus. He didn't come you just empty-handed with the things of the culture that he was going and telling trying to three scriptures that make him send. So be careful sometimes, you know, when a scripture thoughts come to your mind that it's properly being used that is not trying to give you permission to send so as Believers the devil will try to tempt you in what you already doing. It might be in very good thing that you start becoming prideful even for things that you doing for God. Then you need to be careful. That's how the devil will get to you. You need to know the scripture in verse for you. See Jesus says it is written man shall not live by bread alone counteract the first time in verse 7. Jesus says again, it is written did Jesus know the scriptures to go. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test inverse. Tan again. Jesus said to him began Satan for what? It is written. How do you overcome the Devil by the word of God you overcome the Devil by the word of God look with me Ephesians 6:17 does it says there and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit? What is the sword of the spirit the word of God? You see so I will weapon here is the sword of God. So when the Devil comes and tempt us, we got a that's why we need to memorize scripture when when a bad son comes to our mind. We need to counteract The Bad Touch with scripture when you're feeling lonely. You're feeling a miserable you feeling like a nobody then. I need to remind myself what the scripture says about me as I'm walking with God. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength my God shall supply all my needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus in my loneliness. Your God can meet my means is he I'm feeling just just no peace. You keep him in perfect. Peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you great piece of those will love your lord laughing makes them stumble. You have to know the scriptures so that when the thoughts come to mind you are ready to attack because it is a fight says take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God the way that you overcome the devil is to know his plan and to know the word of God. I love the way Tony Evans put on able to handle a righteous life. That is that consistently confront him with what God's word was he able to overcome Jesus? Jesus consistently confront him with God's word and we know Jesus work perfectly before God. I love the way Charles Stanley put it also he says the word of God has an answer to every problem that we Face the word of God has an answer to every problems that we face I do often we looked at our problems. We think they are so foreign to scripture but Ecclesiastes tells us there is nothing new Under the Sun whatever your face today somebody else pasted in the past before there is nothing new Under the Sun and one of the lies of the devil is to make us think that the problems that we Face. We are the only one in the 7 billion people that are in the world that face this problem. That's a lie, a lie and lie a lie, and Ally many other people in the world face the same exact thing that you fake and even if there's nobody in the world that face that exact thing that you face the Bible says Jesus and Hebrews 4:15 was tempted in every aspect of life. So Jesus knows you can go to Jesus and there is an answer to all your problems and Lastly lastly. We need to know that we can overcome our Temptations lastly. We need to know that we can overcome our Temptations and the plan is to recess we need to resist the devil. I know Look at Jim's for 7 to 8. It says submit yourselves therefore to God and what do we need to do? The resist the devil? What will he do? He will flee from us done giving in to your Temptation. If you don't give in your resume the devil will flee from you. It says draw near to God. What will God do God will join here to you. He was in you is greater than he that is in the world. You don't have to fall into temptation cleans your hands you Sinners and purify your hearts you double-minded stand firm against him resist. And be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of Believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are. So are you the only one suffering in the world? How are you? The only one facing Temptations? all over the world all the people are facing the same thing that you do. What you do need to do is to stand firm. That's a temptation. But what do you do with that anger? That's what leads to sin?

See that's a verse that my wife and I will apply a lot. It says be angry and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. That's why when we engaged her that we just never go to sleep. We just sit on the bed.

The guide words to the song the problems and tell them to quickly does be angry and do not let the sun go down on your anger because when you stayed angry, what's the problem? You are giving an opportunity to the devil because remember the devil attacks you when you're hungry when you're angry when you're lonely and when you're tired, so just stay angry about something. What can I eat at the moment before you blow off a moment in the moment of time you will blow up you cannot hold it forever. And that's why you see so many people act so ugly at times because they just been holding on to that anger for so long and then at at at at at that moment it just burst open and then all that anger go out with rage. That's why you don't keep anger in your life. If you angry about something find somebody to talk to you about it. Go to prayer give it to God read the scriptures, but do not stay angry while you're angry about something. You need to take care of it before you go to bed. You don't want to give the devil an opportunity to destroy you it says give no opportunity to the devil. So when we stay angry, we're giving the devil an opportunity to come in and let's finish the 11 to 13. We're talking about the armor of God put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil for that. That's where we fail. We think that when Temptations come is just it's just natural ages. It has nothing behind it look at it, but we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against the rulers against the authorities against the cosmic power over. This present Darkness against the spiritual forces of evil in the Heavenly places that the devil came from Heaven to Earth and is coming to Earth here to tempt you in every area of life to destroy you therefore it says take up the whole armor of God any time you get an invitation to disobey God. This is the work of the devil. It's not just Opportunity to lie. It's not just an opportunity to disobey God. This is coming from the Devil the father of lies because he knows his destination. At least trying to take as many people as you can with him and try to destroy as many lives as he can. Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may not may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand firm to resist. So in a nutshell, you never have to give in into your Temptations. You have the power to overcome because of your faith in Jesus Christ that's supposed to say amen. Hallelujah and of the Pentecostal like you never have to give in into your Temptations. You have the power to overcome because of your face. in Jesus Christ Yellow a week, but we'll make every effort the devil would make very nice offers to you that are enticing. But it's never worth the price.

You never have to give in into your Temptations. You have the power to overcome because of your faith in Jesus Christ. The devil will make nice offers. Do you that are enticing? But it's never worth the price.

Proverbs 7 19 to 23 gives us a clear picture here.
