The Model Prayer
The Model Prayer
the prayer that the disciples asked of Jesus to teach them
last week the prayer was for daily bread
without food our bodies will grow faint and die
this week we are looking at the next phrase forgive us our debts
David Guzik - Just as real as the need for daily bread is the need for daily forgiveness. We often feel the need for food more; but the need for forgiveness is real whether it is felt or not. “As bread is the first need of the body, so forgiveness for the soul.”
there has been a video out in the last month that claims because of un-confessed sin sin a person can lose his salvation.
the thought goes something like this.
all of our passed sin was forgiven by Jesus on the cross
all of our present and future sins we have to ask forgiveness for.
or they are not taken care of thus your name is erased from the book of life until you confess and repent of that sin
they will use verses like the one before us today forgive us our debt and
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
the idea is if Jesus paid for all our sins on the cross. past present and future
why are these verses needed?
today we are going to look at what did Jesus accomplish on the cross
are all of our sins forgiven, dealt with, and taken away
or do we need to keep a record of all of our sins and make sure they are all dealt with
read Luke 11 1-4
The Wickedness of Sin
The Wickedness of Sin
Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
David knew that there was sin in his heart but he did not know what it was
there are sins that the people of Israel did and sins that we do that we don’t even know we are doing them
“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If a person sins unintentionally in any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and he does any one of them,
if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him bring near to Yahweh a bull from the herd without blemish as a sin offering for the sin he has committed.
the Apostle Paul talking about the war going on inside of him
He wants to do good but doesn't
the flesh/sin part of him is always getting the upper hand
So now, no longer am I the one working it out, but sin which dwells in me.
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the working out of the good is not.
For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one working it out, but sin which dwells in me.
I find then the principle that in me evil is present—in me who wants to do good.
For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,
but I see a different law in my members, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a captive to the law of sin which is in my members.
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from the body of this death?
Paul speaks about the law here lets look at the law
thou shall not murder
I think it is safe to say that none of us has murdered someone
but what does Jesus say about this commandment?
“You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not murder’ and ‘Whoever murders shall be guilty before the court.’
“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
again about adultery
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’;
but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
this is a small example of the sins we do everyday all day long. that are unknown to us
We just don’t know the Holiness of God and the sinfulness of our sin
so it is very possible to sin without even knowing it
at the end of Paul’s letters he would leave a list of sins to avoid as a christian
he would do this to educate them on what is a sin
a young believer who has had his conscious seared will sin and not even know it
the Holy Spirit teaches us what sin is in peoples lives
so with all of these different ways of sinning and not knowing that you are in violation against God
how could we possibly confess and repent of all without fail
and what if we sin and our names have been blotted from the book
the Holy spirit has not educated and convicted us of that sin
We die in a car crash.
we will go to hell because after we repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. but we have un-confessed sin
this is the fear that people have when they don’t have a solid foundation to stand on
this is the way to keep people from sinning and doing everything right
when you start with bad theology and you dont know Gods word
you can control people with the lies from Satan
but The Truth sets you free
Let’s look at what scripture says
Justified
Justified
Systematic Theology § 1. Symbolical Statement of the Doctrine
Justification is defined in the Westminster Catechism, “An act of God’s free grace, wherein He pardoneth all our sins, and accepteth us as righteous in his sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us, and received by faith alone.”
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
look at this same verse in the Holman Christian standard
Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
little further in Romans
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
we have been declared not guilty
that goes on to the end when the wrath of God comes against sin
and again later on in Romans. after Paul got done agonizing over the sin that is controlling him says
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies;
who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
Jesus died for our sin Redeemed us from Satan
God the Father Justified us declared us righteous
and the Holy Spirit
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
It Is Finished
It Is Finished
the redemption of the souls that Jesus died for was finished on the cross
Jesus came to save His people from their sins
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
when it is up to us to make sure that we keep our names written in the book
we are insulting Jesus and His death on the cross
we are calling Him a liar when He said it is finished
because what we are saying is It is not finished I have to finish it
FOUNDATIONS
what is your spiritual house built on?
is it built on the cornerstone that is Jesus?
is it built on the building blocks of the apostles?
Is your foundation on God’s word
or is your house built on loosely fitted sticks that you are constantly afraid to walk on
are you in constant fear of not being able to keep up with your sins?
it’s time to read and study God’s word
it’s time to go to a church that gives you a good foundation
not just a Ted talk sermonette
soo getting back to our prayer Forgive us our sins
what does this mean? we will get to this next time
do we need to confess our sins Yes
do we need to ask for forgiveness Yes
