I want to begin by telling you guys thank you for allowing me to speak to you tonight, and congratulations on making it so far. Just one week left and you will be graduated. Life starts now. It is a long roller coaster, but it’s fun.
I have had the pleasure of knowing some of you since you were very little. Quite a few of you I have played basketball or video games with, and a few of you are to blame for some of the white in my beard.
If God is for you, who can be against you, right? Success looks different to each and every one of you. You guys aspire to be many different things. Some of you have wanted your career since you were a small child. Many of have changed through the years. I will tell you that you will likely change your minds many times throughout life, and that is okay. It will be okay if you Do something different.
But success takes on many forms. What I call a success other people will call over kill, and in some cases others would call it falling short, but to me it is a success nonetheless.
Being successful is not always about that other people say is successful. Being successful in many ways is a matter of perspective. If you are successful in your viewpoint, you have given all that you desire to give, you have done all that you aspire to do, and you have reached your desired goals, then you are a success.
Let’s look at passing a class. If you pass, that is successful, right? Well a 70 will pass many classes, and that is fine for many people. C’s get degrees as you may have heard. But for others you must receive A’s in your classes in order to feel successful. In both instances success was managed, but the results looked different.
And that is okay. Success, in many cases, is relative to the situation and the people involved.
What is important is that you strive for success. Whatever it may be or look like, do all that is within your power to achieve it. Put in the hours, the late nights. Read the books, search the internet, go to the trainings. Let your mind be a sponge, and mold your life to achieve your goals. Greatness cannot be achieved without first sacrifice.
Do not sell yourself short. You as an individual are unique. You were intricately created for a purpose. Do not give up on yourself. If you have a dream, go for it. Do not let people talk you out of it. You may take advise, but one of the greatest dream killers are people with negative outlooks on someone else’s dreams. Your dreams are solely yours. They are up to you to fulfill. Exhaust yourself pursuing them. If you don’t at least try you will be left with regret, and that is something that no one enjoys carrying around.
One last thing before I give you a couple of topics to be successful in.
Do not compare yourself to others. Comparison is a thief of joy. There will always be someone who is bigger, faster, stronger, better. If there is not then there will be one in the near future. Comparing yourself to what someone else has received can ruin you. Be thankful for what you have from the hard work that you have put in, and live your life in a content manner.
You only get one go at this. Don’t waste it focusing on what others have, but rathe what you have been blessed with.
