“Fear of The Lord”

welcome
recap last weeks message
read passage
Luke 12:1–7 ESV
In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
talk about this passage = Jesus warns the disciples not to fall into hypocrisy themselves
what is hypocrisy?
Hypocrisy is knowing the truth but not obeying it.
Jesus repeatedly exposed the hypocritical attitudes of the religious leaders. They knew the Scriptures but did not live by them. They didn’t care about being holy—just looking holy in order to receive the people’s admiration and praise
Hypocrisy is living a self-serving life.
People desire positions of leadership not only in business but also in the church. It is dangerous when love for the position grows stronger than loyalty to God.
Hypocrisy is claiming Christ as Lord without following him.
Jesus challenged society’s norms. To him, greatness comes from serving—giving of yourself to help others.
Hypocrisy reduces faith to rigid rules.
Being a religious leader in Jerusalem was very different from being a pastor in a secular society today. Israel’s history, culture, and daily life centered around its relationship with God.
Hypocrisy is outward conformity without inner reality.
It’s possible to obey the details of the laws but still be disobedient in general behavior. For example, a person could be very precise and faithful about giving 10 percent of his or her money to God, but refuse to give one minute of time in helping others.
speak on these for a minute
read next passage
luke 12.4-7
Luke 12:4–7 ESV
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
we will rest here for a minute
lets look at this first part of this passage once again verses 4-5 say
Luke 12:4–5 ESV
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!
ירא
yr (yar-eh) means to tremble, to be afraid, to fear,
probably talking about the devil then...
it also means to be in reverence, to exalt, to regard with feelings of respect…
thats right today we are going to dive into the fear of the lord. or the fear of God…
I think if there is a need in the church right now it is this: to fear God…
Ive been saying now for a while that we need revival, that revival is on its way, and i am talking about the kind of revival that cultivates a fear of the lord, that produces a fear of the lord…
talk about a lacking of the fear of the lord in the world but also in the church
talk about some pastors and churches
talk about we are all sinful we are in the process of sanctification we can not reach righteousness only through him can we…but understand that in the process there must be progress
2 cor 7.1
2 Corinthians 7:1 ESV
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
in the fear of God
scripture also says
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
talk about a true beautiful woman
Proverbs 31:30 ESV
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
like wise a sinful man
Psalm 36:1 ESV
Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes.
so a godly beautiful woman has the fear of the lord
like wise a sinful man lacks the fear of the lord
it is the fear of the lord that cultivates a lifestyle in us that truly reflects a christ like image and life
what is the fear of the lord exactly
well the fear of the lord is a gift of the new covenant
Jeremiah 32:40–41 ESV
I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me. I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul.
we are given the fear of the lord in the new birth but it also is something that we need to cultivate
someone once said “the fear of the lord is the soul of godliness”
soul food soul in music its the flavor of a godly christ like life
like any flavor there are ingredients, here are 4 ingredients to the fear of the lord
A true knowledge of God.
A pervasive awareness of God’s presence
A growing gratitude for what God has done for su in christ
A strong sense of our responsibility to God
A true knowledge of God
it all starts here, with a clear true apprehension of God
knowing and understanding who our God truly is…
A.W. Tozar put it best
The low view of God entertained almost universally among Christians is the cause of a hundred lesser evils everywhere among us.
talk about christians views of God today…
he is my homeboy, we bring him to our level instead of aiming to be with him at his…
preach on this…
we love the God is love part but we forget the God is just part…
noah, soddom and gomorah, adam and eve, Jesus on the cross…
Mark 4:41 ESV
And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Luke 5:8 ESV
But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
Matthew 17:5–6 ESV
He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.
Revelation 1:17 ESV
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last,
God hates sin, and we have the full TRUE knowledge of God we began to understand that
it does not come all at once but we must strive every day to grow in our knowledge of God
Conclude if time is running out…if not read on…
A pervasive awareness of Gods presence
Christians know that God is omnipresent. Intellectually, we understand that. But do we have an “astonished reverence” because of it? Are we in our daily lives? Maybe not so much.
Psalm 139:1–10 ESV
O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
I love that verse
Psalm 139:7 ESV
Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
the latin term corem deo = in the presence of God
RC sproul puts it like this
To live coram Deo is to live one’s entire life in the presence of God, under the authority of God, to the glory of God. To live all of life coram Deo is to live a life of integrity. It is a life of wholeness that finds its unity and coherency in the majesty of God.
integrity working hard and being a good person even when no one sees it…
story of Goodwill and my grandpo
people might not be watching but God always is when we have this knowledge of God it might cause us to live a little different life

HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER…
Luke Jesus Speaks Against Hypocrisy / 12:1–12 / 139

Jesus taught how valuable each person was to God. How does a person assess his or her worth? A student’s worth is measured by grade point average; a pitcher’s by earned run average; a career professional’s by salary; a salesclerk’s by commission.

God measures your worth with no number, no calculation, no ratio.

You simply bear God’s image.

Your life was worth God’s Son.

Your future is in God’s home.

Tomorrow, rise from your slumber as a person filled with value, known intimately by God, destined for greatness. Shed your silly inferiorities. You are a son or daughter of the Almighty.
