Psalms, Volumes 1 & 2 (Context: Verbal and Thematic Links with Surrounding Psalms)
Those familiar with the account of David’s life in Samuel, particularly 2 Sam 11–19, will be struck with how David didn’t do these things.
Lusted, lied, did not uphold justice.
Amnon and Absalom.
The striking contrast between David’s actual behavior and the ideals announced in Ps 101.
Maybe this we written as if it is a intended as a value statement that will be realized in the heart and administration of the future king from David’s line.
So let’s read this text, with Jesus in mind. No human king, no matter what his intentions will be able to pull this off because the heart is desperately wicked.
Look for a repeated set of words.
Psalm 101 ESV
A Psalm of David. 1 I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music. 2 I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; 3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. 4 A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil. 5 Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure. 6 I will look with favor on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in the way that is blameless shall minister to me. 7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes. 8 Morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, cutting off all the evildoers from the city of the Lord.
Hymn # 186 - The Old Rugged Cross

What to Embrace (1-2)

Psalm 101:1–2 ESV
1 I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music. 2 I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house;
I will sing…character of God.
I will make music
I will Psalm (make my own up)
I will ponder - (blameless) integrity (meditating and obeying Scripture
music gets stuck in your head.
be prudent. give careful thought to.
mull over.
have you ever written a song?
maybe we should
I will walk. -(Heart)
it’s one thing to sing the right thing, its another to live the right way.
walking with integrity of heart. (control center)
His heart will be formed by the Scriptures.
In his house - as for me and my house…
Hymn # - 349 - Trust and Obey

What to Reject (3-5)

Psalm 101:3–5 ESV
3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. 4 A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil. 5 Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure.
He will not fix his gaze on anything that arise from demonic influence.
Satan and his minions operate in the world that God has created, and they practice their schemes and stratagems on people created by God. They can only seek to pervert and twist what God has made. David thus disavows the cultivation of an appetite for perversions of God’s good blessings.
What has Satan and His minions twisted?
looks grow into thoughts, then thoughts prompt actions, actions turn into habits, habits become character, and the character determines destiny.
Stop it. make a firm decisions.
James 1:13–15 (ESV) - 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
v. 4 - I will not have a perverse heart. (twisted and perverted)
the way out of the unbreakable chain is to stop and start craving something else more.
don’t crave evil.
5a. - sins of the tongue. saying things in private that you would never ever say in public if you wanted to save face.
This behavior is so evil and so easy to slip into.
what did you momma say? If you don’t have something good to say, don’t say it.
I need to vent. ect. no you want sympathy from others. You want a God replacement. Your friend can’t do anything about your situation , God can so vent to HIm.
Search your heart before you speak to your friend in “confidence,” your friend in confidence better have a back bone and the abiltity call you out and you need to be humble enough to recieve the corrections.
WOW this stuff is hard hitting and hard to implement.
David was resolved for these things. He failed but Jesus didn’t. Good thing we aren’t called to be conformed into the image of David who didn’t follow through. But Jesus did.
5b. haughty eyes (arrogant) - broad heart I will not endure.
solution is humility.
David here commits himself to putting his eyes not on wicked things but on righteous things, and as a result the thoughts of his heart will be straight rather than twisted. David’s own heart will translate into the kind of environment he tolerates…
Hymn #438 - Search Me O God

The Idea’s Applied (6-8)

Psalm 101:6–8 ESV
6 I will look with favor on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in the way that is blameless shall minister to me. 7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes. 8 Morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, cutting off all the evildoers from the city of the Lord.
Now David is going to apply these resolves to others in His kingdom.
This is the company he will keep. Those who are as resolved as him. (good fellowship) - so important in the church. likeminded people really seeking to honor KING Jesus.
These are the people David wants to be influence by. He will take their counsel.
6-7 -David will reward and punish / fertilize the flowers while uprooting the weeds.
Day by day he will renew his intentions. Not a one time decision.
Bridge this to Jesus
