Paul’s final instructions to the church.

1 Thessalonians 5:12–28 NKJV
12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. 25 Brethren, pray for us. 26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. 27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
We know that Christians made the “church”
The local church is an individual fellowship. PGBC is a local church.
The individual churches; PGBC is an individual, local church with our own leadership, our own fellowship and our own worship. That is what Paul will deal with in our passage: life in the local church.
Paul uses a repeated word, in verses 12, 14, and 26, of “brethren.” He is addressing the believers in the church in Thessalonica.
He is speaking to the family of God. When you become a Christian, God becomes your Father, you become a child of God and you have brothers and sisters in Christ.
We are to love each other, encourage each other and grow together, in order that we might glorify and honor God.
Many people today are not a part of church. The think that it is not needed, or it is not important.
They neglect or ignore their local church family. I don’t believe that we can grow and honor God as believers unless we’re linked to and a part of what God is doing in the local church.
There is no such thing as a perfect Church. There will be problems with the leadership, and with the people of that church.
Some people go from church to church, trying to find the perfect church. It’s not there.

The Leadership VS 12-13

1 Thessalonians 5:12–13 NKJV
12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
There are 2 office in the church. The office pastor, (Elder, Bishop) Leader
Deacon. Servant.
The pastor is to preach the word. Too many today are no longer preaching the word.
Pastor is to lead as God leads.
Pastor is to teach.
Pastor is to encourage.
VS 12 Labor, The word “labor” means “wearisome toil or effort.” It means you work so hard that you are physically, emotionally, spiritually exhausted. It means to labor to the point of being weary.
“Labor among you” We have to work together.
Pastors deal with their own person problems too.

Be watchful and caring VS 14-15

1 Thessalonians 5:14–15 (NKJV)
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
These is no prefect church. There will be problems of some kind.
Paul is talking to the people of the church.
Exhort: To beg of you.
“Brethren”
“Warn those who are unruly”
Warn: “to caution”
“unruly” Disorderly, rebellious.
The word unruly pictures a soldier who steps out of line and behaves in a disorderly manner.
Based on the meaning of the word, perhaps Paul simply had in mind any church member whose ungodly behavior was threatening the unity and integrity of the church.
People who like to stir things up.
This type of person can hinder a church.
“comfort the fainthearted”
Those who are easily discouraged because they are not strong in their faith. Those who want to give up.
You are to come along beside them and comfort them.
“uphold the weak”
Speaking of the ones who are spiritually weak. They fall easily into sin.
Galatians 6:1 (NKJV)
1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
Sometimes Christians are the worse when it comes to helping those who have fallen away.
“be patient with all.”
If Christians are going to take seriously their responsibility to warn the unruly, comfort the discouraged, and help the weak, then they are going to need to be “patient”
1 Thessalonians 5:15 NKJV
15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
So we warn them who are out of line, we comfort the fainthearted, we support the spiritually weak, we are patient toward all and if someone is evil toward us, we don’t render “evil for evil.”
We “pursue what is good both for [our]selves and for all.” Someone said, “Evil for good is demonic, evil for evil is human and good for evil is divine.”
When Jesus was on the cross, all that He had gone though, He called out, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do”
We are commanded to care for one another as followers of Jesus.

Worship VS 16-22

1 Thessalonians 5:16–22 (NKJV)
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 Do not quench the Spirit.
20 Do not despise prophecies.
21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.
22 Abstain from every form of evil.
“Rejoice always”
Matthew 2:10 NKJV
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
Philippians 4:4 NKJV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
Paul rejoiced even when being persecuted.
We rejoice even when things don’t go as planned.
We rejoice because Gods loves us.
We rejoice because Jesus gave His life for us.
We rejoice because w can call on the Lord at anytime.
We rejoice because Jesus is coming back one day.
We rejoice because Jesus said, I go to prepare a place for you.
Christians who rejoice always, are less likely be unruly, are less likely to get discouraged. Christians who rejoice always are less likely to fall into sin.
17 pray without ceasing,
The New Testament: An Expanded Translation (Chapter 5)
Be praying unceasingly
This mean we have to stop doing everything, get on our knees, and pray?
It means every issue in your life you take to God in prayer.
We need have an attitude for prayer at all times.
Christians who pray without ceasing are less likely to be unruly, are less likely to get discouraged. Are less likely to fall into sin.
Paul and his fellow co-workers prayed without ceasing.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJV)
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
This doesn’t mean you have to give thanks for what you are going through, but you can give thanks while gong through it.
It’s easy to be thankful while things are going well. But what about difficult times?
If we rejoice always, if we pray without ceasing, it easier to gives thanks in everything.
“for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19 NKJV
19 Do not quench the Spirit.
The work of the Holy Spirit is very important in ministry. The Holy Spirit convicts (this is when people get saved) (or when believers repent)
The Holy Spirit will draw us closer to Him. This means a closer walk with Jesus.
To quench the Holy Spirit means to extinguish, subdue, suppress.
It could something some says, a bad attitude. anger.
So anything that obstructs, hinders or dampens the work of the Holy Spirit is forbidden.
1 Thessalonians 5:20 NKJV
20 Do not despise prophecies.
God’s word is complete, all the prophecies have been foretold.
Don’t despise God’s Word.
The idea of prophecy is the telling forth of God’s Word. It’s not just the telliing of future events; it also means the speaking forth of God’s Word.
So when God’s Word is spoken, if you don’t obey it and submit to it, then you are quenching and grieving the Holy Spirit and despising the prophesying or the teaching of God’s Word. Be teachable in your worship.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 NKJV
21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.
When God’s word is preached, when God’s word is taught. You need to make sure that the truth of God’s word is taught.
So many people are led down the wrong path because of false teachings.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 NKJV
22 Abstain from every form of evil.
God told Adam and Eve, don’t eat from one tree, they did not abstain from it.
David walked on his roof top and saw Bathsheba, he did not abstain from her.
Evil may look good.

Encouraging words VS 23-28

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NKJV)
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
If we will stay true to God’s word, we can have peace with God.
LOOK AT VS 16-22
1 Thessalonians 5:24 NKJV
24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
We can’t do it on our own.
God calls you unto salvation. God is trustworthy.
1 Thessalonians 5:25 NKJV
25 Brethren, pray for us.
1 Thessalonians 5:26 NKJV
26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
This is the way they greeted each other in that day. Elab.
Today, Holy hand shake, hug, fist bump.
Just show one another love.
1 Thessalonians 5:27 NKJV
27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.
1 Thessalonians 5:28 NKJV
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
