Honor your father and mother
Exodus 20:12 ““Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”
Paul highlighted the promise for obeying this command.
Ephesians 6:2 ““Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:”
The Law of Moses was serious about rebellious children.
Deuteronomy 21:18–21 ““If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.”
Jesus did not shy away from serious consequences for rebels.
Matthew 15:3–7 “He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:”
God was serious about honoring your parents the punishment for not doing so was very strict. DEATH! Jesus says you are more worried about traditions that you don’t obey the law. He said that some Jews tried to get around taking care and honoring their parents with a loophole.
When it came time to take care of their parents in need, the Jews would say oops sorry I can’t help you all my money is a gift to God so I have nothing left to help my parents.
Jesus response is, YOU HYPOCRITE!!!!
Lest you think God is unfair to rebellious children remember the wages of sin is death. ANY SIN!
Don’t forget Jesus said the FATHER had compassion on the PRODIGAL!
Luke 15:17–24 ““But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’ “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.”
Jesus died! That gives us hope for the prodigal.
Ephesians 2:4–5 “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),”
Colossians 2 and Ephesians 2 both talk about new life in christ this applies even to the prodigal sons. Remember as long as they are breathing there is hope. The prodigal son is a very messy story. It is no joke, your prodigal is God the Father’s prodigal don’t forget that. They are so far gone but maybe not far enough.
You shall not kill.
Exodus 20:13 ““You shall not murder.”
Human Life is sacred.
Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
The death penalty for murder is an ancient form of justice.
Genesis 9:5–6 “Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man. “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.”
Jesus convicts us all as guilty of murder.
Matthew 5:21–22 ““You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.”
Some people say I am a good person, it’s not like I ever killed someone. Jesus would disagree.
Hatred is connected to murder.
1 John 3:15 “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”
The first murderer was the devil. He murdered YOU!
John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
Murder is different than manslaughter.
The Bible has a specific set of instructions for an accidental death. Murder is also different than killing that takes place in righteous warfare. The cities of refuge were established by God.
Remember life is sacred.
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.”
That is a good segway into the next command, because it always bothers me when that verse is taken out of context. That verse is not talking about not putting sugar in your body or exercising a lot or have big muscles or a fit figure. That verse is talking about the sanctity of a pure and holy life.
You shall not commit adultery.
Exodus 20:14 ““You shall not commit adultery.”
If your body is a sacred temple, it is defiled by sexual immorality.
1 Corinthians 6:18–20 “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Once again Jesus means business.
Matthew 5:27–30 ““You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”
God is serious about sexual purity.
1 Thessalonians 4:3–7 “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.”
God wants sanctity of marriage.
Genesis 2:24 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
The sanctity of marriage supersedes the honoring of the father and mother, Some people need to cut the leash from mom and dad.
You shall not steal.
Exodus 20:15 ““You shall not steal.”
Thieves are barred from heaven.
1 Corinthians 6:10 “nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
How many things do you have to steal to be a thief, 1!
By the grace of God the thief can be redeemed.
Ephesians 4:28 “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.”
Don’t bear false witness.
Exodus 4:16 “So he shall be your spokesman to the people. And he himself shall be as a mouth for you, and you shall be to him as God.”
This is more than just lying.
God didn’t say thou shalt not lie, he said thou shalt not bear false witness.
This includes gossip, hersay and sharing things without fact checking. I think that our media is very very guilty of ignoring this command. Make sure that you do your best to not bear false witness. This happens way too often. People don’t do their research but they pass on information without checking it out for themselves. This verse is so hard today.
Gossip destroys lives, don’t be a gossip.
Exodus 23:1 ““You shall not circulate a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.”
Gossip is a problem.
2 Corinthians 12:20–21 “For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults; lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness which they have practiced.” “For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults;”
If you have a gossip problem, memorize this verse.
Proverbs 30:32 “If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, Or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth.”
You shall not covet.
Exodus 20:17 ““You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.””
No system of law convicts someone on the intent of the heart. There is no way to enforce this command, except if you are God! This is a personal command it is between you and God. I will never come to you and say, “YOU ARE COVETING his car!” I can’t know that.
God is worried about your heart!
Jeremiah 17:10 “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.”
There is one thing you can covet.
1 Corinthians 12:31 “But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.”
You can want Jesus, you can want holiness, you can long for heaven, YOU CAN HAVE ALL THIS WORLD JUST GIVE ME JESUS. I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords to day, than to be the king of a vast domain
