Key Texts all in 2 Samuel:
David and Mephibosheth 2 Sam 13
David and Bathsheba - 2 Sam 11-12
P: Lord, make us repenters for life, whole-hearted repenters, quick repenters, earnest repenters, God-fearing repenters, fruitful repenters.
The foolishness of delaying repentance/confession. Psalm 32:6-7
- You don’t know how long you have.
- You can’t schedule ahead your repentance.
- “the flood of great waters” comes when you’re least expecting it. The Master returns, the Groom arrives, like a thief in the night – we must always be ready, having our oil full, our lamps trimmed – our hearts CLEAN from every impurity, washed from all defilement of body and spirit, prayed up, and confessed up… (v.6)
We are NOW in the age of grace, we are in the YEAR of the Lord’s favor, a “time when You may be found”.
Memorize Psalm 32:8 ++++++ David and Bathsheba Principles: 1) Be ready in season and out of season – “In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle…” God’s patience before disciplining David… The slippery slope of sin… the lies of continuing in sin and piling sin upon sin… or the need to cover up sin… Don’t put yourself in situations or places where you are more likely to face temptation. 2 Sam 11:1 //1 Chron 20 -Uriah is the FOIL to David, who was basking in luxurious indulgence, staying in the palace when he ought to have been at battle! David grew entitled… felt like he did enough!!! - idleness. -the danger for retirees… to get lazy and let the devil sneak in… -the SAME thing for pastors growing relaxed, lose vigilance… and let our guard down. 1 Chron 14:2 David KNEW that the LORD had established him… -HE GOT entitled… David GAVE in to his curiosity/lust upon SEEING Bathsheba! David remained at Jerusalem David saw David inquired David took David lay. The slippery slope of SIN!!!! The BLINDING nature of SIN. Bathsheba was washing – ESV says prob. Cleansing herself from menstrual uncleanness; after her period; thus establishing this baby is DAVID’s!!! She also was still in the process of cleansing… a time when she was not yet even able to sleep with her own husband.
- David’s total DISREGARD for the law of God. - God DESPISED God’s Law!!!!
But David wondrously repents. “I have sinned against the Lord.” UNLIKE Felix, who hears Paul’s gospel and message about righteousness, self-control and judgment, and sent Paul away, rather than repent… !!! David was a GREAT repenter! Nathan’s rebuke!!! -Warren Wiersbe’s encouragement to use Nathan’s rebuke as how to preach 1) illustration/allegory DISARMS his hearer!!! P: Teach me HOW to do this!!! The proof of David’s actual genuine repentance—TURNING away and change—is the story of David with Abishag; the text specifically notes she was a very beautiful VIRGIN, young woman coming to keep him warm, and yet David did not cohabit with her, “know her”
David and Absalom 2 Sam 13-15
4/9/24
David and Absalom…
2 Sam 18:8?!
Psalm 146: the way of the wicked the LORD brings to ruin!
- Absalom lost his 3 sons before him
- And THEN he lost his own life, tragically, and comically, as his glory—his thick hair—was caught in a tree, holding him captive, rendering him powerless before Joab and his 3 spears thrown into his chest, followed by the 10 men of Joab gathering around and striking Absalom and killing him.
- “They took Absalom and cast him into a deep pit in the forest and erected over him a very great heap of stones. And all Israel fled, each to his tent.” (Strike the shepherd and the sheep will flee…; same for every king or hero + his people…)
David should’ve disciplined his sons in the FIRST place.
ESV 563 “b/c of David’s sin with Bathsheba he lost his moral courage and clarity of judgment” and thus did not punish Amnon for his depravity, his unthinkable evil act…
at the same time, he did learn, as is highlighted in 1 Ki 1, with David not “knowing” Abishag… a gorgeous young virgin cuddling him to “warm him” in his elderly coldness/lack of circulation…
David was ANGRY, but he did not do ANYTHING…
Though some manuscripts, Dead Sea Scroll and LXX add “But he would not punish his son [Amnon], b/c he loved him, since he was his firstborn”
The CONSEQUENCES of NOT disciplining your children are TERRIFYING!!!!!
the sin of Amnon, of Absalom, of Adonijah
**1 Ki 1:6 “[Adonijah’s] father [David] had NEVER at any time DISPLEASED him by asking, ‘WHY have you done thus and so?’”
THANK God for his discipline!!! P: to be YA who LOVE God’s discipline, and never despise it…
who thank our parents for whatever discipline they have exercised upon us according to their wisdom [and in the Lord…]
David and Mephibosheth 2 Sam
- Sunday Evening?
- Sermon text: 2 Sam 9
CF:
2 Samuel 9:1 (ESV)
And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness [HESED] for Jonathan’s sake?
Back in the day, David requested Jonathan’s kindness…
1 Samuel 20:8 (ESV)
Therefore deal kindly [HESED?] with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. But if there is guilt in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”
David’s kindness/mercy to Mephibosheth… letting him sit at his table ALWAYS!!!! David faithfully upheld his side of the covenant with Jonathan to not utterly cut off his house [just as Christ ALWAYS keeps His promises] - WHAT a picture of God’s adoption and kindness to us!!!!
- What a powerful type of Christ here…
“Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you… and you shall eat at my table always.” (v.7)
- God the Father shows us kindness for the sake of our father Jesus [God’s beloved Son! Whom He loves as His own soul] and He will restore to us the Kingdom, that we might eat at His table ALWAYS.” - V.11 “So Meph. ate at David’s table, like one of the king’s sons.”
We become one of the true King’s son!!! o Though we are from the lineage of the rebel, Adam, and of the spiritual father Satan… who killed Jesus and sought to kill David!!! o Meph was part of a line “doomed to death” as we are apart from Christ, in sin 2 Sam 19:28** “BUT you set your servant among those who eat at your table.” o Meph. was LAME in both feet v.13
1) A “liability” to David’s house, nothing much to offer, just like us to Christ!
· Zeph 3:19 God promises to save and restore the LAME!!! · Jesus comes and fulfills this! Healing the LAME!!!! · Giving HONOR to the lame!!!
o Meph. later totally renounces all his privileges and honors after Ziba deceived David and stole his honors 2 Sam 19:30

friendship; true brotherly love; true intimacy; we NEED this. Without this we CANNOT grow or flourish in the Cn life…
Every Timothy needed a Paul… who needed an Onesiphorus; Paul also really loved Timothy, “there is no one like him!”

Sat morning: small group discussion
Mephibosheth???
Sat Evening: Friendship Drama - David and Jonathan (son of Saul)
Conflict? David lives in Saul’s court, but Saul is trying to kill David… Jonathan loves David and they’re BEST friends.
the king’s personal musician and commander of armies is now under threat of assassination by the king himself, who is filled with jealousy against this promising and loved young man who happens to be God’s chosen replacement for him; the king’s own son becomes BEST friends with him, and recognizes God’s call on his life over his own as heir to the kingdom of God.
How will their friendship survive this dramatic situation?
Sun evening: Romantic Drama - David and Bathsheba
Conflict: the king doesn’t go into battle as he ought, and so he ends up seeing a naked married woman bathing while her husband is away, summons her, impregnates her, then kills her husband to cover it up and marries her; God confronts him for His evil act and disciplines him severely for it. What LOVE! part of his hesed is to DISCIPLINE…
What will turn out with this dysfunctional relationship from the start?
Sun evening: Family Drama - David and sons
Conflict? David’s sons sin grievously and David fails to discipline and confront them, leading to Absalom’s then Adonijah’s revolt.
A loving father works hard to provide and lead his nation, but neglects personal relationship, friendship, and proper discipline/training of his own children, leading them to be given over to their own sinful habits and desires, wreaking havoc in their household; Amnon, then Absalom, then Adonijah.
How will this family turn out? The father won’t discipline his kids; but God’s promise of everlasting kingship is given to him…?
