INTRO:

Last week, we finished our study in the 7 churches of Asian minor.
We discussed the 7 churches are in some ways representative of various time periods of what we call the church age.
The Church Age: is the period of time from Pentecost (Acts 2) to the rapture (foretold in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). It is called the Church Age because it covers the period in which the Church is on earth. It corresponds with the dispensation of Grace.

BODY:

V. 1) “Voice like a trumpet… come up here… things after this”
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 NLT
13 And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. 15 We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. 18 So encourage each other with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 NTV

1 John 14:1–3
John 14:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
1 John 14:1–3
John 14:1–3 RVR60

1 Corinthians 15:51–53 NLT
51 But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! 52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.
1 Corinthians 15:51–53 NTV
HARPAZZO (Gr.)
RAPTUS (Lat.)
Rapture...
Titus 2:13 NIV
13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
Titus 2:13 NVI
“After this refers to the church age...
The Church Age is the period of time from Pentecost (Acts 2) to the rapture (as we just read; foretold in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). It is called the Church Age because it covers the period in which the Church is on earth. It corresponds with what we call the dispensation of Grace.
V. 2) “throne in heaven and someone sitting on it”
The idea of God sitting on his throne is an anthropomorphism says God is the spirit and does not have a physical body does not need to actually sit .
But the throne represents a place of power, authority, majesty, honor, and justice.
V. 3) “...the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow”
More akin to a halo (aureola) than an actual rainbow…
V. 4) “Twenty-four thrones surrounded him, and twenty-four elders sat on them… clothed in white and had gold crowns on their heads”
David organized the Levitical priest in 24 courses to represent all the priests (1 Chron. 24:1-19)
Revelation nowhere specifically identifies who the 24 elders are. However, they are most likely representative of the Church.
“elders” is never used to refer to angels, only to men, particularly to men of a certain age who are mature and able to rule the Church.
Sitting on thrones indicates that they reign with Christ. The Church is repeatedly said to rule and reign with Christ
Revelation 2:26-27 - “…will rule nations”
Revelation 5:10 “… become kings and priest and will reign on the earth”
Luke 22:30 “…you will sit on thrones”
Crowns (Rev. 2:10 “… be faithful till the end and I will give you the crown of life.”
V. 5) “seven torches with burning flames. This is the sevenfold Spirit of God.”
Isaiah 11:2–3 (NLT) “And the (1.) Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the (2.) Spirit of wisdom and (3.) understanding, the (4.) Spirit of counsel and (5.) might, the (6.)Spirit of knowledge and the (7.) fear of the Lord. 3 He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay.”
V. 6) “Sea of glass… 4 living creatures
In the Tabernacle after the brazen altar was the lavar (bowl of water the washing and before entering the holy place)
Ephesians speaks of being washed in the word
In heaven you don't have to wash any more you're standing in it
V. 7) “Living creatures: lion, ox, human face, eagle in flight
These are believed to be Seraphim because Isaiah had a similar vision and says so...
Isaiah 6:1–3 NLT
1 It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. 2 Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 They were calling out to each other, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!”
Isaiah 6:1–3 NTV
Faces are representative of attributes of Christ… Demonstrated in the Gospels
Lion: Matthew: Messiah
Ox: Mark: Servant
Human face: Luke: Son of man
Eagle in flight: John: Son of God / Majesty & ruler
V. 8) “day and night… holy, holy, holy...”
V. 9) “...
V. 10) “twenty-four elders fall down and worship”
V. 11) “You are worthy, O Lord our God,”
