I am the Door
ILL- getting to Falls Creek without keys to the trailer. (Monty)
ILL-My trailer is locked on to my truck and only key is in Mountaineer.
How do you get in without a key? Locked doors control who has access.
Jesus controls access to His Kingdom.
John 10:1–10 ESV
1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Jesus cries out very clearly that he is God by this parable.
He is the door- controls who is allowed to be his sheep.
He is the Good Shepherd- very obvious to the Jews that there was only one Good Shepherd.
My time as pastor of Del Norte is coming to an end. But you have a Great Shepherd taking care of you.
Psalm 23 ESV
A Psalm of David. 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Jeremiah 23:1–6 ESV
1 “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. 2 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord. 3 Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4 I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord. 5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
Ezekiel 34:15–16 ESV
15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God. 16 I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice.

4 Ways to Live in the Flock

1. Listen (8)

John 10:8 ESV
8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
It matters who you are listening to.
False prophets of the past- or maybe more currently the Scribes and Pharisees.
Context of chapter 9
Jesus healed man born blind and Pharisees did not like it.
Luke 9:39–41 ESV
39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
Matthew 23:13 ESV
13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.
Luke 11:52 ESV
52 Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
vs 1- anyone who tries to come to God without going through Jesus is a thief and a Robber- this was the Scribes and Pharisees.
APP- Making up your own rules will not get you to heaven.
I know you hear a lot of noise about heaven.
I am going to listen to the one who was resurrected from the dead.
Hear his voice (3)
John 10:3 ESV
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
We must listen to the Shepherd.

2. Enter (9a)

John 10:9 ESV
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
Only one entrance.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Parable of 2 Ways
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Jesus is the gate.
Free Will decision to enter. But you have to enter through the gate.
Romans 10:13 ESV
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

3. Exit (9b)

John 10:9 ESV
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
You won’t leave the security of the pen unless you trust the shepherd.
Live in the security of being his sheep.
They do not come and go alone- always with the Shepherd.
Go in and out and find pasture- Live within the relationship of the shepherd means having peace/ needs met.
Beatitudes- "Blessed" = fulfilled. Having spiritual needs satisfied.

4. Live (10)

John 10:10 ESV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
kill=slaughter.
Jesus came so we can have life - abundantly.
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Abundantly= perisson= "that which goes beyond necessity." The gift of Jesus is life beyond our wildest dreams.
Everyone lives for eternity- only the saved live abundantly.
The choice: spiritual death or abundant life?
CONCLUSION
Our salvation is determined by what we do with Jesus.
We have sinned.
He died for our sin.
He is the only way.

Have you entered by the gate?
