Text: Luke 10:36-37
Intro: You have heard me reference before that the church is a hospital and it needs to be. Today, as we look at the parable taught by Christ about the good Samaritan, let’s consider the very practical truths here within this passage.
Vs. 25 - It is important that we first understand that context of this Lawyer’s question… It is not because he was seeking wisdom from above, the Bible says “…and tempted him...”. This was a dishonest question from the start. So Jesus responded to his question with a question pertaining to the truth of God’s word. He didn’t jump into His opinion, which if there was any opinion that would be worth listening to it would be the Lord Jesus. But, that isn’t what He did, He directed Him to the word of God. vs. 26...
Matthew 4:3–4 KJV 1900
And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
What an example for us...
vs. 27
Now the lawyer is a smart guy, and he clearly has read the book of Deuteronomy because he answers according to the Scripture… To which Jesus replies...
vs. 28
What this man said was absolutely right but the problem was that he was dead right. Orthodox in view, he had religion, he had taken truth, embalmed it, picked, it, and put it on the shelf, but here the Son of God stands before Him, and rather than fall at His feet in hopes to receive mercy he temps Him. We see that he had head knowledge, but no relationship with the One who could and would save Him. This should challenge our thinking… There are a great number of people, who grew up in church, maybe said a prayer, but don’t know Christ… Christ came in the form of a man, lived a human life that we might know Him personally. I’m not going to base my salvation on any experience but I will base it on a relationship with the One who was dead but now liveth… None of us are saved by the plan of salvation, our salvation is, and must be wrapped up in the Man of Salvation - The Man Christ Jesus!
vs. 29 - Notice he doesn’t deal with his love toward God? He deals only with that which can be seen…
Read: vs. 30-37
It starts with going from Jerusalem to Jericho. Jerusalem is 2700 ft above sea level and sits on the top of a mountain. Not any mountain though, Mount Zion, Jericho is the lowest city on earth sitting only 20 miles from Jerusalem but sits 820 feet below sea level. So if there was ever a picture of going down, here it is.
John 10:10 KJV 1900
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
There really are three types of people described in this parable:
The thief (The lost) would say, “What’s yours is mine, I’m going to take that and leave you with nothing.”
The Levite (The religious) would say, “What’s mine is mine, I’m going to keep what I have and move along.”
The Good Samaritan(The believer) would say, “None of it is mine, I am only the Steward, let me share what I have simply on the basis that I love God, so I also love you.”
He had compassion: (vs. 33) Do you know what that word means? 1828: A suffering with another, painful sympathy, a sensation of sowwor excited by the distress or misfortunes of another:
Think about the example of Christ who’s compassions they fail not…
1 John 3:17 KJV 1900
But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
Jesus poured out His compassion on the world and He did it physically, spiritually, and it was genuine, and He suffered because His creation was suffering…
2. His compassion was genuine: (vs. 34) He met the man where he was at, you can’t do that wrapped in a robe of self-righteousness… When I came to Christ, He found me where I was, I wasn’t seeking Him anymore than this Jew, was seeking the Good Samaritan. Let’s be honest, he wouldn’t have wanted to Samaritan, being a Jew, meaning he would have been looking in the wrong places… Christ found me…
1 Corinthians 9:20–22 KJV 1900
And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
3. His compassion was Gentle (vs. 34)
A. It’s cleansing: The oil and wine acting as a purifier.
B. It’s comfort: They would have soothed his wounds.
C. It’s covering: He bound up his woulds.
D. It’s carrying: He placed him on his own beast… He walked while this man rode in his spot...
E. It’s caring: He brought him to the inn… ( A picture of the Church) “and took care of him” It goes further… vs. 35
Matthew 25:40 KJV 1900
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Church it is our responsibility, to help those in need, both physically, spiritually, emotionally, to mentor, disciple, train, and invest, even at our own expense. A pouring out of my life into the life of another…
During WW2 there is a story out of Poland when the Nazis invaded, they took all the Jews, dug a hole, lined them up and shot them. A little boy was in the mix, he wasn’t shot, but he fell into the pit with everyone else. Later he was buried with the blood and bodies of all of those who died. He laid there while they poured dirt on top of him until he couldn’t here any noise. Once that happened he began to dig, the grave was shallow, and loose… He went and knocked on the nearest door, he was covered in blood and mud, and he was sent away because of the cost personally, that the person would pay if they got caught. The same happened at the next door, but the third door he knocked on was told to come in… He was traumatized, orphaned, and alone, and someone had compassion on him, took him in, cleaned him up, was there for him, took care of him, and because of it he survived the Holocaust… Without that women that took him in, he was without hope, and would have surely died… She had compassion…
Jesus touched, healed, fed, cared for every person he came in contact with… How about you?
John 12:21 KJV 1900
The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
